    Nice Job. Nice clean lines. Letters suck. There's no way around it. You have to be very careful and precise. If you cut off line at all on a single letter, it can make an entire word or phrase look crappy. Keep at it and they'll get better.

    I tape a playing card over the slot. I did that on my old Delta for years. It's usually not to hard to find an old used up deck. Then I've got 54 table inserts. Punch a hole in the middle, and tape it down the clear packing tape.

    I spray the tape and apply the pattern to it. But inevitably get some residue on my fingers at times. I keep mineral spirits handy at all times. It also helps pull any lingering saw dust from the wood before finishing, without raising the grain.

    Welcome from Montana. Now that's a loaded question. Depending on who you ask, the answer will be different every time. Seems like most will agree that both the Hegner and Excalibur saws are about as good as it gets, but there are others like Hawk, Seyco, Jet, and King that are also making high quality saws. I've got a Jet and love it. My advise is to see if you can find a Home Depot, Rockler, or Woodcraft location near you so you can go look at what they have and hopefully try one or more out and see what you like best.

    As far as pressure when cutting, ya just have to try different things and see what works best for you. But generally you only want to push hard enough to keep the wood moving through the blade. Don't force it or you can bend the blade and/or your cuts won't be square. For me, sanding depends on what I'm doing. Finish sanding is pretty light, but if I'm removing a pattern, it can get fairly aggressive. However, you have to be careful when sanding thing plywood. Don't want to sand through the top layer. Painting??? Almost every project I do gets spray finish or oil finish. If it has a backer, it's also spray painted.

    I try to remember to wear my dust mask as much as possible. Safety glasses, it really depends on what I'm doing. With the scrollsaw or miter saw, rarely, if ever. But when I'm working on the lathe or table saw, every time, all the time. I haven't used hearing protection, but probably should with some machines. Most of my tools are fairly quiet, but the planer is always very loud, and the router can be depending on the wood and bit being used. I am trying to use more and more hand tools for that very reason. And I only wear gloves when turning. I don't want anything that blocks my view of my hands or that will get caught in a blade and suck my fingers in. I don't know if that is the most safety oriented view, but it's the one I've got.

    Before she was born, I found these patterns on Scroller, LTD. Finally got them finished and hung. Turned out to be a little bigger than expected, so we had to do some rearranging to make everything work. Now You know it’s Clair’s room.

    I've made my own before. Mostly out of whatever excess wood I have around. I usually try to pick a contrasting color if possible. It usually ends up being oak, or walnut. No Glass. I do add the cost of the frame to the price. For the most part, I have a hard time putting cheap dollar store frame on something nice. I don't know if the frame has helped sales or not. Most of these I did before I was trying to sell things. I've donated a few to fundraisers, and maybe sold one or two that were framed. The rest continue to go to the annual craftshows I do. Sorry, the pictures aren't the greatest.

    The only things I put oil on are things that are going to be handled, such as bottle opener handles, knife handles, or furniture pieces. For the most part, I don't feel that most scroll projects needs oil, and it's much quicker and easier to spray finish. My finish of choice is Min-wax Polyurethane. Spray it on, give it at least 15 minutes to set, and spray on another coat. Apply 2 to 5 coats, then rub down with either brown or white paper to polish it.
