Christmas Trees and "Elves" from German Scrollsaw Magazine
meflick posted a topic in Bragging Rights
Back a couple years or so ago, @Rolf and @NC Scroller Scott had shared about getting some copies of the German scroll saw magazine, Feinscnitt, and doing some patterns from them. I liked several of the designs from a couple of editions and ordered two different ones with Christmas designs in them. Knowing no German, I was going to have to go on pictures alone. I have looked at them from time to time, bit hadn't tried to make any of them until now. There are still several I want to try but I did get around to cutting these out of 1/4" BB ply and then using the Unicorn Spit stains on them that I bought a while back. (Yes, I am a gotta have it and then procrastinate type person.) LOL Here is what I finally got done. Several others I want to try from them too. Wish they had a "translated version" of the magazine, or that they could work with SSWC to put some of their articles in SSWC as they have some really beautiful things in their magazine - maybe I just need to learn German. I hear my husband's family's surname is maybe of German origin. (Have also heard not too though.) This is the magazine's home location: https://www.feinschnitt-kreativ.de - everything is as should be expected in German but with the help of Google translator and a bit of time, I was able to order the copies I did. There are more from the two I want to do, we will see if I get anymore done from them this year. I have been playing "clean up" on several projects I had started and have had laying around as well as cutting a few new ones like these this past week so I will try to post a few more photos of some other items this week maybe. -
Cute idea. Thanks for showing.

I agree, beautiful work and I am sure your brother is going to love the return of the wood he gave you. Good to hear you are getting him interested in scrolling as well.
-
Ray, that's too bad. You might still make him something to commemorate the World Series win - one day he might appreciate having it to memorialize his work there during the time. You never know (And yes, I knew you were being facetious in your post. Which is why I replied, changing the subject. just trying to give you a little humor. )
-
Yes you did mention that. You asked for a pattern to cut for him to celebrate their playing in the World Series as I recall. Did you ever finish a piece for him? If so, did you show it? And speaking of sports - did you see that the LSU QB, Joe Burrow, a grad transfer from Ohio St won the Heisman Trophy last night? Interesting, all 3 QBs there, were transfers students. All transfers from some of the top football programs to other top programs. It’s becoming a carousel of transfers. Not sure I am a fan of it, but I can see a little of both sides. Time will tell I suppose. At least my team turned it around this season after not opening the season well. Knew it was going to be a long season when a boat in the “Vol Navy” burned and sank on opening morning of the season. Things turned around though and we are playing in the Gator bowl. Now, if only the coaching staff can continue this upward trajectory and get my beloved Vols back in the mix and winning ways. It’s been a long time.

John, glad it was a profitable morning for you. I can’t imagine having the holiday season in the heat of summer. I know frosty wouldn’t for sure. Even though we seldom get a White Christmas where I live, that is the iconic image in my head of the holiday which does not equate to the leaf of summer.

Sorry to hear your Saw was not delivered. I know how excited you were waiting for it, and how disappointed it was to not get it as expected. Almost like expecting Santa and then him not showing. Hopefully it will indeed show up Monday so you can be ready to go on a Tuesday. Look at it this way - at least your injection is scheduled for the morning rather than the late afternoon - that way you aren’t blowing two days. Hope the spinal injection goes well and helps with your issues.
-
Les, sorry to hear you have been having problems, glad to hear you are getting it taken care of. Prayers said now, and on through that all things go smoothly for you on Monday and you come through with flying colors and be up and doing well.

Those are. beautiful Paul. I had not seen those before. Thanks for sharing.

Which one Dave, the Foredom or the flex drum sander on the variable speed grinder? For sure the larger one would. I would think the Foredom would as well but cannot say for sure as I have never used one on it. I have not used a sanding mop before really even though I got one a while back. You could call Judy’s shop and ask them. They are very good to help and answer questions on anything.

I agree. I do not have the patience to drill all those holes I know. -
Skye is eating in style now. Looks good.

Dave, when I was first wanting to start with Intarsia I went ahead and purchased this one from Guinevere. It spins way too fast and cannot be slowed down since it does not have variable speed. After taking some of JGR’s classes, and using the Foredom in her studio, I purchased one of these with the adaptors and things needed from her shop: https://intarsia.com/collections/hardware/products/foredom-variable-speed-bench-lathe I prefer it to the Guinevere system since it is variable speed. She and I use it when sanding vary small pieces. For sanding larger pieces, she uses a Sand-rite pneumatic drum sander. However, given their price, she has her student stations set up with the flexible drum sanders that she sells on her site. I bought a variable speed grinder at HD or Lowe’s and add the flex drum sanders with the adapters from Judy’s site https://intarsia.com/collections/hardware/Sander and which are the same as Ray sells at Seyco. So if interested, you could get faster delivery given your location from Seyco. they do not sell the Foredom setup though it doesn’t look like. I have that system set up in the shop with the sander on one side and one of Judy’s wonder wheels on the other. I really covet the Sand-rite pneumatic sanders she has but just have not been willing to pull the trigger on that yet. I Haven’t figured out how to sneak it into the shop or explain the “need” for it yet to DH. I can’t remember what sizes she has on it, I think one is 8 or 9” and the other side is like 5 or 6” I think. She lets students use it while in class. It sands faster I think then the flex drum sanders (takes more off). Plus, the flex drum sanders eventually give out since their core is a hard foam and need to be replaced. They are both also on variable speed grinders. You could put the sanding mop on one side easily enough.Having the variable speed is very Important in my opinion. You can see the Sand-Rite system here: https://www.sand-rite.com/store/DUO-DLX-All-Purpose-Contour-Finishing-Sander-c35962737 anyway, my 2 cents.

Thanks for the explanation on her untimely death, me being not mechanically Inclined (but fortunately married to a man who is ) I didn’t know of how life sustaining fingers were in this instance. it is good to know however that you will be facilitating organ donations from your good friend so, in part, her life will continue to aid others in need. Good to hear too that you have already found a new and younger cousin to move to Indiana to help carry on her life’s work.

I’m truly sorry for your loss Larry. Heagner sounds like a great friend. I am curious though, how exactly did she break her finger and then died from that? I know she had lots of cousins and siblings out in the world and I am sure they would be interested in hearing more to prevent this untimely tragedy from happening to them especially I. Light of the fact that their family heritage touts that they come from such fine upstanding stock.

Nice work Kevin. Remember you are recovering from a heart attack or stroke correct so - relax and rest as you need. However, that said - if you continue to still feel poorly, please check back in the with the Doctors so they can make sure you are fully on the mend!

I think @Kris Martinson may have done this pattern. At least it looks like the same one to me in this thread here:

Nice work on that Barry. Thanks for showing. @shiney b you can find the pattern he used on Steve Good’s blog here: http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com/2019/11/click-image-to-enlarge-below-rumor-has.html he removed the reindeer from the door and put the “Ford” there instead.

Hi Joe and welcome back. I am sure your daughter and her husband appreciate All you do for them and your grandson. Glad you are finding time to work with your Saw. There is a subforum here in the Villagecalled “Pattern Requests” specifically for making pattern requests. Most folks who help out there only ask for a thanks and a photo of your finished piece. You can find it here:https://www.scrollsawvillage.com/forums/forum/30-pattern-requests/ Also check out the pattern library here for lots of free patterns. It can be found here: https://www.scrollsawvillage.com/gallery/category/2-pattern-library/ Then there is the “Resources “ section of the Village with different resources including one with links to other pattern designers sites. It can be found here: https://www.scrollsawvillage.com/pattern-shops/ some of those provide free patterns and ones for sale. Also, you might check out Steve Good’s blog if you aren’t familiar already with it. He posts a free pattern almost everyday and has done so for years so lots to choose from there too. His blog is here: http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com/ and his searchable pattern catalog can be found here: https://www.stevedgood.com/catalog/index.php

Feedback Wanted - Personalized Ornament Kit
meflick replied to Travis's topic in General Scroll Sawing
@barb.j.enders Barb, if you already had Inkscape installed, then you need to set it as the default program for opening SVG files, For some reason it sounds like it is defaulting to Google Chrome for SVG files based on Travis’s statement above “. . . Looking at this, it appears you don't have Inkscape installed on your computer. As a result, it is opening in Google Chrome, which won't work . . . To do that, right click on any SVG file, and you will get a menu, from there choose to open this file type with Inkscape. (I am on my IPad right now so I can’t give you exact menu choices but should be clear when you right click. If not, let us know and I or someone can give you more specific menu listings.)- 50 replies
