  1. Looks like you might have a winner. Time will tell. With summer craft shows coming up you need to build more inventory than you have pictured.
  2. Yes we precut and drill pilot holes. All the kids do is assemble them with screws. We take the kids into the shop go over how the wood is processed and machine safety. We found a wholesale supplier who donated the cedar. It cost the kids nothing except a couple of hours of fun. We have around 10-12 club members help demo and assemble. They have as much fun as the kids.
  3. Not tiring but as much fun for the club members that helped as the kids. The club members look forward to the event each year. We have around 10-12 club members help which is plenty.
  4. My woodworking club sponsors a birdhouse day everty spring. Today we had 50 kids make birdhouses. Below are pictures of kids, grandparents , moms and Dads have the time of their life.
  5. I bought Baltic Birch 1/4" plywood at Johnson's Workbench for 15.95 for a 5'x5' sheet. The Baltic birch is the best I have found. So if your close to South Bend IN or Charlotte MI it's worth the trip. I am about 90 miles from either one. The trip to Charlotte is an easier drive.
  6. They are round shaker boxes a cherry box and a maple rim attached with brass pins holding the rim to the top of the box. The name crown box was coined by Scott Phillips we he was having lunch with John Wilson the shaker box guru at least that's the story John told. I will add pictures when I get my set finished. There was a several people there taking the class so I took mine home to finish. The maple bands were getting stain from the cherry so wanted the white maple rim to be white. The crown term came from the rounded brass pins around the top. Here's a picture without the bottoms or rims.
  7. Where was my call to come and help. I would make the 80 minute drive to help for a share. I just got over 800 2' pieces cedar for free to use in the woodworking club's kids birdhouse day. That's enough cedar to last 3 years. We usually get around 50 kids a year and so far we have 40 signed up for this year.
  8. I get mine the same place as Kevin in Charlotte MI at Johnson's Workbench. I am going to class on crown boxes tomorrow and also stopping at Johnson's Workbench to pickup some Baltic Birch before going to the class.
  9. Indiana, they are instituting a new Diploma track where a student can get a diploma instead of taking the ridiculous math requirement for graduation. Instead of taking algebra 2 they need to meet community service and career readiness requirements. They start the students on a career path in middle school and hope have internships for them their senior year. The school I taught at is ahead of schedule and have businesses donating time and money for the program (over $225,000.00) so far to equip the old shop areas. I guess my retirement was too early (haha) missed out on the new trend.
  10. Tissue boxes are a great project. I had my middle school students make them for a project. I had as many as 145 a year cranked out. I am glad they brought back the shop classes at the school. My 5th grade grandson loves the class. I guess it's time to give him some shop time at grandpas' shop.
  11. We have a sawmill day in the spring and fall. We take the boards and put them in a solar kiln until they are dry. It is a great experience we usually have 10+ members help. Last spring we cut 28 walnut logs, some oak and poplar all donated to the club.
  12. I went with club members to pickup 600bdft of cherry today that the club bought for less than $1 a board foot. The cherry we picked up today added to the cherry we bought two weeks ago our inventory on cherry stands at 1100 bdft. The next wood we are getting is 8 10foot logs of sycamore that's at least 4' across. That should make for some nice looking quartersawn boards. I can't wait until we have a sawmill day to cut the logs.
  13. Congratulations on the fix. It's great when you don't acquire a new boat anchor.
  14. Welcome, and now a lifelong addiction has begun.
  15. I am glad I have several sources for wood. The woodworking club for domestic hardwood reasonable price because we cut and kiln dry our own. The woodworking store I demo at for exotic hardwood, and two other dealers for exotic and domestic hardwood. There are several other places in the area to get hardwood. Indiana has an abundance of places to get hardwood there are several sawmills to choose from. Eastern Red cedar is $2.00 a board foot from the club we had a member bring back a load from Tennessee.
  16. I vote for the 2" and use birchbark' technique to make it look proportional.
  17. I made a tube holder from a Steve Good pattern. You could adapt it to fit what ever size tubes you use.
  18. When I built my detached garage I made sure it had a bathroom. I even got a urinal. The urinal showed up in the back of my vehicle when they renovating the school I taught at. It was good to have former students on the construction crew.
  19. Nice looking stand!
  20. If I buy a new saw it will be a jet with the pegas upgrade. I get a discount because I give classes and demonstrations at my local woodworking store. $50 gift certificate each time so I can pay for some of it that way.
  21. I am using my drill press and a variable speed delta grinder for my sanding. I also have a spindle sander, disk belt sander and a ridgid oscillating sander. You might say I am sander poor. My lathe is for turning only.
  22. We are experiencing 5" of snow temperature got to 35 today and Wednesday it will be a balmy -17. But my shop is 68 so I can still work. I love winter.
  23. Kevin with -12 to -17 forcast for Wednesday and Thursday looks like shop time is going to be limited next week. Stay warm.
  24. Use a pre stain wood conditioner. There several types available, just ask your friendly hardware man. Poplar is not the best for staining but great for painting. I usually buy wood dowels that are the same type of wood I am using.
  25. I have a bigmaxx 50,000 btu natural gas furnace hanging for my ceiling and it keeps my 900 sqft. shop a comfy 68 degrees when -11 outside. It only cost me $120 extra a year to heat the shop and I maintain that temperature 24/7.
