  1. I have a Hawk 226 Ultra that I bought new in 1996. It's had a lot of use in those years and I think it's wearing out. Today I was cutting on it and I noticed there was more vibration than normal. Then the upper arm wouldn't pop up when you unhook the blade. I didn't have time to look at to see what the problem is today but hopefully I will this weekend. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to look for or maybe I need to consider a new one? Thanks
  2. Same to you my friend
  3. I have a 24x30 shop too. It's insulated but no ceiling. I installed an 80000 btu natural gas hanging heater. Works good so far. Keeps it nice and toasty in there. But I'm in Iowa and your in Texas so you may not need as big a one as I do.
  4. I have a Jet contractor saw bought it new in 1999. It's had a lot of use and I've had no problems with it. I wish I had bought the bigger fence though sometimes 30 inches is not enough.
  5. These are my 5 grandkids. They are all older now but I still think of them as being little. Makes me feel old when I look at them.
  6. I used spar urethane on my wood counter tops. Water beads up nicely and it seems to be very durable.
  7. Ray here is how I hung my heater in my pole barn with no ceiling. If you have any free wall space this might work for you.
  8. I had a little time this afternoon so I played with it. It doesn't vibrate as bad as I thought it would and it will probably be better when I mount it solid. Pin end blades are easy to change but you can't cut any small fret work with them. I tried the adaptor for pin less blades it worked okay but you can't do it very fast. To set the blade tension worked okay but again not very fast. My opinion is if you were not in a hurry and just going to cut outside shapes and no small fret work it would be a decent saw.
  9. A neighbor of mine is moving and doesn't want to move all his woodworking stuff so he is selling it. I went there to look at his bandsaw and noticed he had a Dremel scrollsaw. It's the old 2 speed model. So I bought the bandsaw and scrollsaw. Anything to look out for on the Dremel? I haven't tried it out yet but at 25 dollars I thought I would try it out. The only scrollsaw I have ever used is my RBI Hawk so this will be a learning experience.
  10. When I make one my signs I paint everything first and then glue it together. I use good old Elmers yellow wood glue and have never had any problem .
  11. After reading this discussion I went and bought a box fan and a furnace filter and put them together this morning. I just got done cutting a project that took about 2 hours. I set the fan about even with table on the saw and ran it on high. I couldn't believe the amount of sawdust it captured. Usually my glasses are coated with a layer of dust when I'm done but not this time. I didn't think a scrollsaw created that much dust. Boy was I wrong.
  12. Another vote for Freud. I use their Diablo blades and the glue line rip blades. Local Home Depot carries them or Amazon.
  13. I used to make a lot of Harley Davidson signs and other small items and sell them or give them away. Somehow they got wind of it and politely asked me stop infrInging on their trade mark. I asked the lady if I could get licensed by them and she asked me if I could make one for every one of their hundreds of stores to sell. I said probably not. They don't want to mess around with the little guy.
  14. Thanks Rockytime I was referring to side to side movement without tension on the blade. Sometimes I don't explain things correctly.
  15. How much play should there be in the upper blade holder without tension on the blade? I checked mine this morning and without tension it moved back and forth quite a bit. Tension the blade and no back and forth movement at all. The saw is 22 years old and had lots of use so it may be time to replace it. Sorry to hijack this thread but it seemed like the place to ask rather than start another thread. Thanks.
  16. Welcome to scrollsawing. Looking forward to seeing your work.
  17. Yes Scrappile the bottom clamp is removable. That's what I like about it. I can change a blade and be back cutting in under 30 seconds (yes I timed myself once).
  18. I'm In no hurry when I cut so the EX saw may not be for me and the Hegner costs more than the Hawk so I think I will continue to look for a used Hawk for awhile then decide whether to get a new one.
  19. I'm mainly looking for how the blade is changed. I really like the way blades are changed on my Hawk and just wondered if the rest were similar. I looked at a Porter Cable in Lowes and there is no way I could get my fat fingers in there to the lower clamp.
  20. My daughter has watched me make things on a scrollsaw over the years and decided she would like to give it a try. I have been looking for a used Hawk saw around our area but so far they have been too much money or to far away. A Hawk saw is the only saw ,Other than the Ryobi I started with that I have used. I have toyed with the idea of giving her my Hawk and buying myself a new saw but I don't know what I would buy. What would the main differences be between a Hegner,Excaliber,Seyco compared to my Hawk? I could buy a new Hawk but maybe the other high end saws offer something better. I do mostly fretwork. Thanks
  21. Congratulations on the new saw let us know how you get along with it.
  22. Thanks for the great comments. My work doesn't hold a candle to some of the projects on here. There are some really talented people on here.
  23. I like that it is unique.
  24. Here's a moose shelf I have been working on. Used red oak, walnut and cherry.
  25. I made that drive a lot about 20 years ago. Had a son that went to tech school in Laramie Wyoming. That drive was 13 hours. Nebraska is a long and boring state to drive through no offense to you Nebraska residents. We live on the east side of Iowa right on the Mississippi River. It was 5 hours across Iowa,7 hours across Nebraska and 1 hour to Laramie Wy.
