  1. I am one of them old timers you speak of done it that way for years. As I get older I'm not as steady on my feet as I use to be so I'm putting the guards back on all my machines after this happening. It happens so fast you don't have time to react.
  2. I don't post much on here mostly just read but I feel that I should share what happened to me today. . This has nothing to do with a scroll saw but I use my table saw to cut boards to size for scrolling. I was cutting the shelves for a cabinet I'm making on the table saw. I was sawing the last one an had just sawed threw the end of the board when I heard a noise behind me. I turned to look and when I turned my hand turned the shelf board into the blade. It climbed up the blade and shot back towards me. Luckily I was standing off to the side so it didn't hit me in the body but it did catch my left hand. It peeled the skin off the back of my hand from the knuckles to almost my wrist. Bled like a stuck hog. I think I will put the blade guard back on. Just a reminder to pay attention when using a table saw. It happened so fast I didn't have time to react.
  3. I have never sold one. The first one was for wife. When her sister saw it she had to have one too. I made another one for a benefit where I work part time. It sold for $360 at the auction there.
  4. Yes it is 2017 SL. I just traded it for a Kawasaki Teryx side by side. Their delivering it on Thursday.
  5. Here's my shop. 24x30 wood shop in back. 24x36 in front for truck and other toys. Every thing in woodshop is on wheels except table saw. Just wheel them out when needed.
  6. Do you always cut counter clockwise ? I always cut clockwise.
  7. I use to make Harley signs notice I said use to, and sell them to my friends for a donation . One of my friends said I should get a license from Harley and sell them all over. So I called Harley and the person I talked to asked me if I could make enough signs for every dealer in the country which would probably be in the thousands. I told her no I can,t make that many. She said that's what we require to get a license. I asked her if I could be in trouble with them if I kept on making them and she told me we could go after you if we wanted to and you should stop selling them. So I only make them for myself now. This was about 10 years ago.
  8. Sorry for your loss Ray. I just lost a great grandson last week. Don't know why either. Granddaughter went for checkup and the doctor couldn't find the heartbeat. She said sometimes it just happens.
  9. Thanks for all the replies. I think as soon as I sell my Hitachi miter saw I'm going to go with the Dewalt 779. It's the same price as the Hercules and has a longer warranty. It doesn't have a laser but that doesn't matter to me.
  10. I just found a renewed Dewalt on Amazon for $340. I have a regular Hitachi 12 inch saw now and I really like it. I'm trying to sell it on Facebook now. I sold my Craftsman radial arm saw yesterday.it took up to much room and I hardly ever used it. I will check out the sights you gave me Kevin.
  11. Not exactly scrollsaw related but I value you guys opinions. I'm looking to purchase a 12 inch sliding miter saw. I have been reading reviews online and they are all pretty good. I'm leaning towards the Hercules from Harbor Freight. It's got great reviews and is supposedly a Dewalt clone. It's on sale now for $350. The Dewalt is $600. Does anyone have experience with Hercules tools or is there another brand I should be looking at?
  12. The only pieces you can stack cut are the round ones on each side otherwise they are all different.
  13. It's not hard to cut it's just time consuming.
  14. Thanks for the wonderful compliments. Going to make another one this winter for my son.
  15. Rockytime I kept track it took me 34 hours and I drilled 1263 holes. This is the fourth one of these I have made. It is 3 foot by 2 foot.
  16. Just thought I would share my latest project. Made this out of 1/4 inch oak plywood for my daughter.
  17. I get a sinus infection every time I work with walnut if I don't wear a mask.
  18. Sorry about still having to wait but if the newer ones are anything like the old RBI ones it will be worth the wait. I finally had to replace a part on mine after 23 years of hard use. The spring that holds the arm up finally wore out. I also took it apart and cleaned everything and put some grease in the bearings.. First real maintence I've done to it in 23 years. They are trouble free in my book.
  19. Sorry to hear about the wait. I'm considering buying a new Hawk but I think I will hold off for a while and see what happens and how you like the saw compared to your older ones.
  20. Kevin the bearings I took out of my saw were what you called cage bearings(open on one side). They were ball bearings with no grease in them at all. I put grease in them before I put the saw back together. I'm like you I don't see how any oil would get inside them without taking the saw apart. There was no sawdust at all In the bearings so it must be a pretty tight fit.
  21. I had both hands done 30 years ago. Factory work. It's now showing up again not too bad yet though.
  22. The only maintenance I have done to it over the years was couple drops of oil on the bearings whenever I would think of it and keeping the sawdust cleaned off of it. That was all RBI recommend in the manual.
  23. I took it apart today and here's what I found. The bearings on both arms turned but not like they should. They were very dry feeling. I sprayed them with silicone spray and that did a world of good. They were still tight so I reused them. I put some grease in them before I put the saw back together. I also discovered that the saw was not assembled right from the factory. The round thing in the bottom arm that the tension rod goes through was not in its hole in the arm. I put it in the hole when I reassembled the saw. There was very little wear in the v on the arm where the wedge sits. After I got it together I turned it on and was surprised that the vibration was almost gone. Still have some in the upper range but I never cut there anyway. I ordered a new spring from Bushton and should be good to go after its installed. Thanks for your help.
  24. I unhooked the spring this morning before I went to work. The arm moves up and down but has spots where it drags so I'm guessing the bearings are worn too along with the spring. Will tear into it tomorrow.
  25. Thanks all. I will check all those things out. I have to go back to work today so it will be tomorrow before I can get to it. Sucks having to go back to work on a Friday.
