So i met a woman last night at a craft fair event. She knew exactly what we had and was impressed that we were so focused on our product lines. Her husband had passed away in January and was very into scrolling. She offered to sell me her husbands saws if I go pick the up outside of Atlanta, and so there is the rub.... I have no idea what a good deal for both her and I would be on 2 used saws. One is a new Seyco 21" I think she said, maybe purchased from Ray at Seyco and a newer Excalibur (china model) which I believe has not been repaired since he posted about here in 2019 Any idea or thoughts on the pricing for these would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to "steal" them from her, I want to offer a fair price for both of us since I have to travel 4-5 hours to get them and since one is still in need of repair. Thanks as always in advance

First The Man Takes The Drink, Then The Drink Takes The Man

You made the pattern as well? Impressive - cutting and pattern -
Nicely done as always! Thanks for sharing

Mostly I use a 1/16 - sometimes a 3/32 and sometimes a #60 I also have the Colette selection for my dremel as the 60 doesn't work well in my main bench drills - of which I now have 2 LOL

That's the same jig type I have. My problem was I started to cut before I put the piece into the jig and then started to have trouble with the height of one side and by that time I couldnt get the jig setup properly

Compound and 3d cutting - questions and need help please

Thanks all - wish I read this thread before I cut this morning LOL But lots to learn and read -
That is cool! And well done!

So I tried a 3d cut this morning... My first. I've been thinking of making a themed Chess Set. I don't play very well (actually, I don't play at all), but I love themed chess sets LOL Anyway, I used a Pegas #5 mfg brand spanking new blade. The dimensions of the piece ended up at 3 3/8" H x 1 1/4" W Here are the pics and then the lessons I learned - feel free to add your lessons as I may do this again with more scraps It's been dipped in polyurethane and is drying - this is the 2nd dip I don't think it came out to terrible, and I learned a few things which is always good. So for others who have not done this type of cut, but may be considering it here is what I learned... 1. Wood species - very important. I used poplar since that is what I use mostly at the moment. I can see this being a real problem with a very hard wood or a very soft wood. 2. The blank - I used a piece of poplar I had left over. It wasn't exactly cut to size (1 3/4" x 13/16"), but this was a test so I used it. This was the biggest problem I had... The problem was it wasn't a square piece, but was rectangular. This caused a problem when cutting the tall side as it barely fit below the arm of my saw and I couldn't get a good hold of it to guide it through the cut, the arm kept banging the heck out of my fingers. Even with a jig (which was also not set up correctly) I had a very difficult time holding the piece to cut. I think if/when I do another I'll cut the wood more square and thinner and I have to fix my jig to lock the piece in place. 3. Gluing - I used a glue stick and glued right to the wood. Since I had read the outside was going to be throw away any way, it seemed like the easiest option. It was easy, and the correct selection for me. Oh, and I hate to throw things away so I saved the pieces that are throw away. I can use them for framed scenic units when I make them and glue them to the backing 4. Drilling - I used a 1/8 drill bit and probably should have a little smaller for the starting holes. Problem was the rectangular side also posed a problem with the bit size. 5. Blade - There were 2 sides to cut on this pattern, and one side (the deepest cut side) as mentioned in #2 above was a real bear to hold onto and guide. However, the selection of the #5 was spot on, if I used a harder wood I would most likely use a #7 blade instead. 6. Cutting - The cutting of the flat side, was fairly smooth. But again see #2, not so easy. And the tall side took a lot longer than the flat side - makes sense cutting through more wood 7. Taping - Once I had finished cutting the flat side, I had to tape the cut piece in place with clear packing tape. I should have taped the whole thing BEFORE starting the cut. Well there it is. Another type of cut under my belt! Thanks as always in advance for reading

What To Do With Saw Dust From Dust Collector, LOL
new2woodwrk replied to kmmcrafts's topic in General Scroll Sawing
This is what I do as well - I haven;t had very good luck using wood filler. I can never get it to fill anything LOL Likewise with glue, I have trouble getting it to fill edge holes. Cracks, and breaks are fine, but if I cut something and nip an edge I can't get anything to fill in that edge -
First - is compound cutting and 3d cutting the same? I'm thinking they're slightly different. I would like to try doing these but I'm kinda stuck in my thought process and with the patterns I have. I have several 3d patterns - however, a few of them have different images on the two sides. Here's an example - I split this pattern so as not have an issue posting a pattern (if inappropriate, please remove) On one side is the mermaid On the other side is the seahorse. As I understand it once I mount this and bend at the serate, if I cut this, I will get the profile of a mermaid and if I turn the piece I will see the seahorse. Correct? That's not what I want - I want just the mermaid as a piece and just the seahorse as a piece - is there a way to do that with this or do I need to find other patterns? Thanks as always in advance

What To Do With Saw Dust From Dust Collector, LOL

Do you mix the sawdust with the filler to get the color you want? I hadn't thought of that! -
I'm a city boy as well - fascinating! I'll never do it, but I do find milling fascinating and love waiting for the surprise grains that come from the center

Wood putty? Like the fillers you can buy? I've never heard of wood putty. -
I haven't thought of cutting metal yet, but thanks for the heads up - I didn't know there were special jeweler blades either. As an FYI - not sure how but that sheet was and how small you needed to get it, but for cutting metal I have this saw: https://www.harborfreight.com/6-in-55-amp-cut-off-saw-61204.html - I make my own pipe clamps with it and it can cut small sheets as well But, if you're not going to cut this again doesn't really matter LOL
-
Great looking cut! Slowest? Nah, @15 hours to cut that would have taken me 15 weeks! LOL
-
Not in my area - Plywood has gone from $35 for one sided finished 3/4" to $52 and still rising. I saw yesterday some went for $62 a sheet! Poplar and pine from my lumber yard supplier hasn't gone up yet and they're price for 3/4" is $36. I'm so glad I don't have to go to HD or Lo anymore for wood!

I needed to see if I could cut anything other than a puzzle or a wall hanger, so I stack cut one of my favorite Steve Good patterns... They're not finished or framed yet and I'll update once I get them done 1/8 BB x 4, with a very, very dull and bent Pegas #3 MFG blade LOL (another test). I had 4 frames in the shop, from where I have no idea so figured I would use them instead of making 4 new ones which I prefer to do but time is no longer on my side Frame is top right obviously Thanks as always in advance, I'll update the thread once I get them stained, poly'd and framed I'm going to offer them as Outward bound and the other as returning but can be purchased separately. Thanks as always in advance for reading

Nicely done - did you make the caps as well?

Being a new kid on the block (joined in 2018), this where I come for anything and everything scrolling - for me there is no other place, so you're all stuck with me! I check in to FB for other reasons, but not scrolling. Usually just to piss off the fake fact checkers there when I post memes and to give others a dose of needed reality! I do have several business groups on FB but don't really manage them much. I haven't posted much lately because well, all I do these days is puzzles, wall hangers and similar items - I figure there is nothing new for me to show so I don't. I do have a post coming up though, regarding my new trailer setup Stay tuned

Nicely done - thanks for sharing it. I use Keyhole hangers from Amazon:on some of my heavier hanging items. These things hold an incredible amount of weight if you use wall anchors and/or attach to a stud. Too keep the item upright (appearing flat ) I add stick on felt tabs to the bottom Just a note on wall anchors: If not for this wall anchor tool, I would not be using or hanging anything anywhere - it was well worth the purchase price and paid for itself after the first use. Before getting it, hanging things on walls was a real PITA!

What To Do With Saw Dust From Dust Collector, LOL
new2woodwrk replied to kmmcrafts's topic in General Scroll Sawing
I use some of my dust when I glue patterns - I throw a few handfuls over the top of the board. Keeps the glue off my hands I also segregate my dust when I make stuff. When I cut a wood species, I save a bit of dust in spice jars. I sprinkle some on glued joints or glue broken pieces. Then I sand the brake/joint and glue section is usually not visible at all -

Another disappointing issue came today
new2woodwrk replied to nrscroller's topic in General Scroll Sawing
I don't do many of the patterns at all in the mag, but I do enjoy reading it in my private room LOL The articles aren't terrific, but I do enjoy seeing all the great things people have created There are so many talented people featured in that mag Every year I say no more, and then figure what the heck and re-up. -
Best Way To Hang Large Wall Hangings?
new2woodwrk replied to kmmcrafts's topic in General Scroll Sawing
I have several heavy items I've hung on walls. I have used the same method on all of them, although using various hangers The common thread for all of them is a type of French Cleat system and finding the wall studs - wall studs being the most important piece for me!
