  1. Amazing! I'm itching to try my first complex fret project like that.
  2. Looks good to me. My favorite wood for 3D scrolling is basswood. Others work well, finer grain and softer the better. I almost start with a #5 blade and adjust up or down as needed. I almost always finish with boiled linseed oil.
  3. Not to hijack this thread, but does anyone know of good places to buy said size drill bit at decent prices? I'm thinking a dozen at a shot.
  4. Steve's patterns are just great. Such a great selection and all free. He deserves a metal from the scrolling community.
  5. Beautiful work! That type of fret work is on my "to-do" list.
  6. Thanks a lot everyone, very much appreciated.
  7. I'm pretty sure that they're all Steve Good patterns. Thanks!
  8. I've haven't been around any forums, but I have been at the saw. Some of my recent. Hope everyone is doing well.
  9. Beautiful work! What's bubinga like to cut? It's one I've never used and I'm usually a little apprehensive of exotics.
  10. I've made a few and those have either been pine or basswood. I find that basswood works well on the scroll saw, nice fine grain and easy cutting.
  11. Here's my contribution to Spring work. Pattern from scrolleronline.
  12. Very cool and nice job.
  13. I've got some of Steve's basket patterns on my "to-do" list. Great job.
  14. Words to live by.
  15. I like using boiled linseed oil on pine when it's something ornamental that won't see any wear and tear. I also like the amber color that it gives pine. I just brush it on heavy with a chip or junk brush, keep it wet for 5 or 10 minutes and then wipe it off. I let it dry a day or 2 and repeat. You can also top coat with wax after it thoroughly cures or add another coat if it needs it.
  16. Thanks for all the kind words. I appreciate it.
  17. Haven't checked in here much as of late, but have still been scrolling. Something for the season.
  18. I have a Jet 16-32 and have always bought plain rolls from Klingspor and cut them to fit myself. I generally stick to 100, 120 or 150 grit and have found anything finer to be more problem than it's worth. You have to run the very fine grits very, very slow and they still build up heat. But that's just me, experiment and find what works for you.
  19. Not to change the direction of the thread, but I just wanted to make a quick comment on dowel size. I've given up on buying just plain dowels. Not only are the sizes all over the place, but the wood that most are made from are just barely denser than balsa. I've had much better luck with the oak variety sold at the big box stores.
  20. No, I didn't, but that's a great idea. I should start doing that.
  21. I made one out of melamine years ago for our dogs. It's survived 3 dogs and literally gallons of slobber. Wonderful work!
  22. It varies a lot based on what part of the country you live in. Currently here in Ohio (midwest) we're paying about $1.80/gallon. That's the lowest it's been in a couple years.
  23. Free lumber is always the best lumber. The place I buy my hardwoods from sells bags and boxes of their cutoffs for a couple bucks. You'd be amazed at the number of small projects I've made with that stuff, and the rest is firewood.
  24. Am I dreaming or didn't the post office just drop the price by a penny in the last year or so?
