While looking at saws, I heard that some folks do inlay with a tilting table instead of head. So I thought I would try it! Keep in mind I just drew a shape on a scrap and grabbed a scrap of a different color. Blue taped them together, set the table at 2 degrees and cut one round in a clockwise direction. The boards weren't actually flat...and they were different thicknesses also...and I had the speed cranked wide open. But I guess it worked...sort of. The bottom did come out, and I could push the top into the bottom , with a little persuasion from a rubber mallet I'm just not sure where you put the hole for the blade? The outside of the top board is scrap...and the inside of the bottom board is scrap... Much larger hole than I needed, but I didn't take time to change the bit for a scrap test. Now that I know I can do it, I'll have to watch some videos and see the details that I missed.

I saw a video the other day where a guy printed the pattern on a page and pealed off the backing and stuck it to the wood. Like an oversized shipping label. Anyone use something like that? How well does it work vs blue painters tape & spray glue?

Good idea! Mine seams to not slide up and down, plunge, as easy as it did. What did you spray the slides with...WD40?

Thanks Jim! I'll try that with the ones I cut last night, I got some Watco Danish Oil today. Don't know if I'll have much luck with spirals, or at least at this time, but I want to try everything. Then I'll see what I like to do and what I have a knack for and lean in that direction. There are a thousand things you can do and make with a scroll saw. I have to be good at a few of them...

I know I should wax the tables more often...but just forget it...lol. I just set up my KC CHIEFS pattern to do...think I'll go wax the table before I start it. Thanks for reminding me!

I think it was Dave Monk that did a video I saw...making a Batman emblem for his granddaughter I believe. I really liked the boxes Jim Finn put up! He posted a photo of his flea market, or craft show, setup. And wasn't that Scrappile that put up a inlay box talking about flocking? Also I forget who posted a beautiful Harley box the other day. I think it would be so cool to learn to do that, and a tilt head saw would make it easier...I think.

We have a 35 ft. Keystone Sprinter 5th wheel now. We've made the rounds though. In the 22 yrs we've been together we've had 2 - 5th wheels, 3 - travel trailers, 2 - pickup campers, 1 - class A gas motorhome, 1 - class A diesel pusher motorhome, and a popup camper we pulled with 2 different Goldwing motorcycles and a VW powered trike!

Cool! I was not aware you could tune the aggressiveness of the cut! Sounds great for a newbie, I can tune it down till I get more experience. I think the King/EX 16" checks all the boxes of features I may need or use, in the next 2-3 years at least. A tensioner on the front, tool less blade changes, lifting arm for easier changing holes during inside cuts, tilting head (probably easier to learn inlay work as your piece will stay flat on the table), built-in dust vacuum ( I saw a video that mentioned that design helps hold piece to table, may not use vacuum all the time but it might be helpful), can add the Pegas blade chuck if I want to. And the one on sale at Woodcraft comes with a stand! Other than maybe a foot switch, can anyone think of anything I'm missing...good or bad? I just don't want to make a stupid mistake with this amount of cash...like miss a major feature I need or should have because I'm too new to know about it. There's an unbelievable amount of knowledge and experience here in the village, and I'm so glad and grateful to have found you folks!

You're right Ray, there's only so much room in a 5th wheel and truck. And me and the wife and the 20 lb. cat compete for every inch of it...lol.

OK...How about King 16" vs DeWalt DW788? I know the head tilts in the King and the table tilts on the 788. And the King is basically King/Excalibur/Excelsior, probably Pegas too. I have not seen a Pegas 16" on line for sale just the 21" Otherwise what are the differences ? Which would be a better saw from me beginning through the next 2-3 years of experience?

Love the deer! It looks great. I had to go to your site and get the pattern, hope I don't butcher it as I'm just starting. I really like some of the other patterns also...I'll be back when I get more experience. Gary

Thanks! I think a 16" is all I'll need...at least for a while. We'll head for the Mexican border in Mission TX, about a mile from where our house was. I probably won't unpack it till we get there. But being in one spot for 3 months I thought it would give me a good opportunity to practice and sell stuff at the many flea markets all over the Rio Grande Valley. Also when we go other places I'll take it and cut if we are going to be in one spot a couple of weeks.

Sounds good. You and Kevin both mentioned "dip" in Danish Oil. Does that actually involve poring into a container and dipping the ornament into it? That would get all the little nooks covered, then pour any leftover back in the can till next time? I really liked the feel of the Pegas blade. They didn't have any #3...so I got #5. I also got a pack of #2/0 spiral...when I'm feeling crazy I'll try them, and make designer firewood

Thanks Kevin! I've thought of getting tubes...and was going to make a holder for some. But I'll get these so they'll be the right size to put on the saw if the one I get has a holder. Speaking of size...of saw...what kind of things would you HAVE TO HAVE a 21" or larger that you can't do on a 16"? I get it there is a 5" larger throat, but I can't think of anything I would NEED to do that a 16" couldn't handle. I'm thinking most work will be 12"x12" or smaller, possibly a little larger. I would like to buy one good saw and not have to buy another...yea right this coming from a man that has 30 - 40 fishing poles.

WOO HOO!! I did a stack cut! OK...I know it's no big deal lol. But the first one is to me... I did a 4 stack with 1/8th in. B/BB plywood, and a very easy ornament pattern. I was more interested in the mechanics of doing a stack than how intricate the pattern was. Found the patterns in Sun Catcher Studios on line. I can practice some more with Christmas ornaments then get little more interesting patterns. I used a Pegas #5 blade that I got at Woodcraft when I was in KC yesterday. Really surprised me! I don't know if I am getting better, it was the 4 stacked, or the blade but it was very easy to cut! About 1 1/2 hrs. from cutting the plywood into 5" squares on the table saw to pealing off the pattern/blue tape...which is very fast for me. It surprised me that a #5 cut that easy and smooth. Also the Pegas blade did not wander at all!! It just followed the line wherever I pointed it, and was easy to make the few sharp turns also. But I'll tell you...as a newbie taking the trip around the outside of that 4" ornament seamed to take a long time... Hey Kevin...or anyone else that does hundreds of ornaments every year. Is there a fast easy way to put a nice looking finish on them?

I was watching a video by Steve Good on the Bear Woods site. He goes over a Pegas saw...I think before they started US shipments. All those look like clones! He also talked about Pegas chuck head replacements on DeWalt, Jet, Excalibur, King, etc. Have any of you don that? Like it? on what saw? When I was telling my wife about the King I saw yesterday she told me I should do it this fall before we go south!! So I may upgrade 6-8 months earlier than I thought!

The one I saw in the store did say "Made In Taiwan" same thing right. Where else would they be made?

While I was in Kansas City yesterday I stopped by Woodcraft. They had a King 16" saw with metal stand and locking wheels for $630. Is the King, Excalibur, Excelsior and Pegas the same saw? If I get a better saw I want tilting head, tension on front, lifting arm looks good

Thanks. I've got to run up to Kansas City today...but tomorrow I want to find a simple Christmas ornament pattern and try stack cutting 3 at once. I watched that video you did making the UZI from animal shapes...very nice! Is that your shop in the background? What a layout! Wish I had that much room.

Did another Steve Good pattern. This one a NASCAR #48 Jimmie Johnson ornament! I wanted to try something in 1/8th B/BB Plywood. Yes it does cut easier! I took my projects up to the Red Barn Flea Market where I have a few woodworking things. The owner really liked it all, and wants me to make more for the store! She especially likes the hummingbird, KC Chiefs, and Buck and Doe. I told her I would also make some ornaments about this size with Christmas stuff, angels, bells, tree, etc. she thought those would sell good.
