  1. Beautiful! Who couldn't like that?!
  2. No, the pieces were too small to stay in one piece - even with using a 2/0 blade. But I have the pattern and can make another one. And probably will out of a hard wood.
  3. Thanks Charlie. Funny the tips like these you don't find in any of the books/reference material on scroll sawing. I'll add these to my "Book of Scroll Sawing Knowledge". And oh, yes, I just got YOCTOSUN Head Mount Magnifier with 2 Led Professional Jeweler's Loupe Light Bracket and Headband with 1 - 3.5 magnification power Interchangeable lens from Amazon for just under $20. A little odd - they go 1/1.5/2/2.5/3.5 - for some reason skipping the 3 power. I haven't tried cutting with them yet, but did experiment with the lens, settling on 2 and 2.5 as the most promising powers to use. I do wear glasses and I use the magnifier with the elastic headband and it fits comfortably. We are having a bit of cold snap here in Delaware and the garage is a little cold for any long stints at the scroll saw. So I'm doing other stuff. As I was cutting the ants out, I was having to get close to the work and wishing I had the magnifier. Just after I finished the piece, the magnifier came in the mail!
  4. You will make her cry - in a good way.
  5. Always looking for improvement. Thanks for the tip. Will put them on my shopping list.
  6. Thanks Frank, I'll give the Red Oak a try.
  7. Welcome to the Village from Dover, Delaware.
  8. So how do you keep that from happening? Photoshop it back on? Or do I have to just be more careful?
  9. I decided to give these a try and they came in the mail today - too funny - just as I finished cutting out the ant pattern! Tried them out for a few minutes before the evening meal and I think I'm going to like them. Will give them a try on the next small work. I wear glasses, but using the headband makes it comfortable to wear. More later.
  10. Saw this pattern and had to try it. Started out on quarter inch HD (baltic?) birch with a 2/0 blade and then tried a #5 for a couple of the ants. Got another lesson - a piece of the bottom ant head broke off. Guess I should have used solid wood? And maybe add a category on the forum called Oopsies! Lord knows I'll be making more of them!
  11. After seeing this I am beginning to think I will NEVER run out of things to do with my scroll saw. Wow! Excellent work!
  12. Did your parents give you a scroll saw for your first birthday? Superb work!
  13. You nailed it! I watched a lot of this show growing up. But the again, we only got one channel.
  14. Yep! That's really good for starting out. Well done!!!
  15. Do you live in your workshop? I'd still be working on the one of the train!!! GREAT work.
  16. Now that's an interesting tip. One I don't remember seeing before. I'll check myself next time I cut.
  17. Sweet! You made that look easy.
  18. Yep! Got this one as a Christmas & birthday present from the kids. BREAKING NEWS: Our daughter sent us a notice that OSHA is instituting a change to these types of saws - downsizing from 10 inches to 8 (or 8 1/2") due to on site accidents. And DW will be discontinuing them - our son-in-law was wanting one and had to go to a few different places before he could find one. I checked on-line trying to find more detailed information but came up empty. Perhaps someone else can add to this. Anyway - I've use the saw only a few times since getting it, but can report I like it (and it's the one I wanted anyway, so that helps). Did my research previously and checked around opinions from neighbors and others I know and got all positive reports also. The only downside/criticism I could offer is the tabletop is a hard plastic and not metal. Not an issue to me as I will only be using it to cut wood and not using it for anything else (like a table to repair/hammer/etc. stuff one.)
  19. This is timely! I just finished a piece (I'm a newbie) and there were a few spots that needed touching up, so I went to HF and got a 10 piece Diamond Grit Needle File Set to do the touch up with. They worked, but your suggestion looks like a much better solution. And one I will try in future pieces. Thanks for sharing!
  20. 3/4" Pine from HD using Pegas #5R Modified Geometry blades. Took about 8 hours over two days. And boy, oh boy, did I get some experience with the letters (as in, "Man, That's Hard!"). And a lesson in how fragile pine is. The 2nd e in "need" snapped in two where it loops around and meets itself when I removed the pattern (at least I think that's when it happened). I was able to glue the piece back using wood glue, so am happy about that. Used the duck brand shelf liner and Krylon Easy Tack spray adhesive. Now to figure out what to do with it - clear coat/paint/stain/backing. The cutting was slow, but I am getting more comfortable with cuts and turns. Still working on relaxing, but I'm aware of it and working on that. All in all, I'm happy with it (another Steve Good pattern).

    DeWalt DW788

I bought a used DW788 2016 model 2 a couple months ago. It had some noise and vibration to it so I replaced the connecting rod and greased all the other bearings and sleeves and now it runs smooth without knocking. Satisfied with how it cuts, having put about 20 hours on it. But in the spirit of full disclosure, this is my first scroll saw, so I have noting to compare it to. Will revisit this review in a year or if issues develop sooner.
