  2. WOW Paul that is really neat. You just became an adopted Grandpa. Good for you. Jerry
  3. Welcome to the Village Paul. If you want tips and tricks you have come to the right place. Folks here are always willing to help. Jerry from Colorado
  4. That is really neat Dick. I'm sure your granddaughter will cherish this forever and tell her children and grandchildren that her grandpa made it. Jerry
  5. WOW Mark, one thing I learned from this is that I am never to try purple heart. From the front, really looks nice and the Opal is a very nice touch. I purchased some 2 inch blocks 3 or 4 years ago. Poplar, Red Oak, Cherry, Mahogony, Maple, and Walnut and as of yet have not put a blade to any of them. Afraid to give it a try. Have cut several inch and half blocks with no issue, but that extra half inch scares me. Guess I'm chicken. Again, nice cutting. Jerry
  6. Hi Fred and welcome to the Village from Colorado. First, I have a question, what part of Utah to you live in. I lived in Salt Lake City for 6 years. You will enjoy your stay here and will find the folks here are very knowledgeable and willing to help any way they can. Jerry
  7. Boy, that looks good to me, and with a hand saw. WOW Jerry
  8. Very cool. Takes me back to when I was a kid. I loved things that glowed in the dark. From the time I was about six, my Dad would buy me a new pocket watch that glowed in the dark. I would hold it under the light then get under the covers to see how long it would last. Don't know how long it lasted because I fell asleep. Thanks for bringing back a memory. Jerry
  9. Steve, welcome to the Village. You have come to the right place. Ask questions, folks here are willing and able to answer any questions you have. I agree with most, the dead man foot pedal is the one to get. Jerry
  10. Welcome to the Village Gregg. More importantly welcome back to scrolling. With your new saw you will have many years of enjoyment. Although the Bauer is new some of our members give it high marks. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Folks here are very knowledgeable and willing to help any way they can. Jerry
  11. Just about everything I do is a favorite of mine. I have 5 that have real meaning. Air Force C-124 Cargo aircraft - I was a navigator in this airplane. Before GPS. F-16 Fighter. Given to nephew through marriage. Retired from the Colorado Air National Guard. My signature. Given to my sons. I wished I had signatures of my Mom and Dad. Marine emblem. Given to the parents of my great nephew whose life came to a tragic end while serving. Paratrooper mini clock. Given to a friend who was a paratrooper.
  12. WOW Charlie, that is very nice. Looking for the pattern but haven't found it yet. Will keep on looking. Thanks for sharing. Jerry
  13. Frank, this is beautiful. Jerry
  14. DITTO what Paul and Ray said. When I started I bought and used local library books on the scroll sawing subject. This site beats them all. Keep up what you are doing Travis. You are appreciated. Jerry
  15. I too drill a pilot hole. To clamp together I use a couple of 1 inch blocks that are longer than the block with my pattern then clamp these using two 6 inch clamps. I don't like using tape because I always get sawdust under the tape. Then have to guess where the cutting line is. Usually doesn't end well. Jerry
  16. One of the issues I had was folding the pattern along the dashed line accurately. Was always a little off. Don't remember where I read this tip. but using a straight edge and a xacto knife, score pattern along the dashed line (don't press too hard or you will cut through the pattern), this will give you an accurate fold. I basically use three different kinds of wood because this is what my big box store has available in 1 1/2 inch square. Poplar. Oak, and select pine. I think the select pine is a higher quality than construction pine. Is usually very smooth and free from knots. Hopefully the tips you have read from this thread will give you some encouragement to give compound sawing a try. I got some tips that I will try. When I first tried, results were mostly lopsided, but finally caught on. One book i purchased was 3-D Patterns for the Scroll Saw by Diana Thompson. Got some good tips from this. Happy New Year to all, and Happy Compound Scrolling. Jerry

  20. This is a Christmas pickup that is did using a mystery wood I believe is Aspen. It is 3/16 inch thick painted using acrylic paint. The other is 1/4 inch thick oak stained with gunstock stain. Both are sprayed with rattle can clear gloss. The pattern is from a pattern book I purchased, Holiday Scroll Saw Ornaments, buy Jacob and Wayne Fowler. Jerry
