Bragging rights-not. This was supposed to be a shower gift for my niece. I stupidly glued the base to the rings before sanding. While tring to correct, made some gouges in the bottom. I am now the owner of a new, small bowl! Made with Poplar. Locer the grain in it. Finish is beeswax/mineral oil. Maybe we need to start a new category.....Not Bragging Rights4 points -
Four more Miniature Birdhouse Ornaments
heppnerguy and 2 others reacted to Denny Knappen for a topic
Four more Miniature Birdhouse Ornaments designed by the late Diana Thompson. I used Walnut for the birdhouses and Spectraply for the little birds. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #3 Super Skip blades for the little birder and Pegas #6 Super Skip blades for the birdhouses. After a light sanding with a Mac Mop, dipped in diluted Shellac, another light sanding, and a final dip. Comments welcome.3 points -

Newly retired
Hawk and one other reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
This past Thursday was my last day at work. I've worked full time since I was 18 and I've spent the last 44+ years with the same employer. There were a lot of us there of a similar age. Most of them have retired already or otherwise moved on. Some of them had as many as 50 years there. The business was family owned since 1960, but was sold to a conglomerate last year. Lots of changes coming and I knew it was time for me to ride off into the sunset. I'm looking forward to going to bed tonight, knowing I don't have to get up for work tomorrow.2 points -

Not dead

Haven't been around much lately. Just wanted to drop in and say HI. I retired 3 years ago for the first time thinking I had it made. I have returned to work 3 times in that time period. A few health setbacks and inheritance of 4 of our grandchildren has really consumed most of my time for the last year. Hope to spend more time at the saw and in the village soon. Thanks for reading.2 points -

Dumb question #another - What do you cut?
Mike Crosa and one other reacted to dgman for a topic
On either one of your examples, you cut away the white. In the second one, the shading is the "wood". But not al patterns are the same. For example, the first one could be cut either was. You could cut away the the black and have a portrait style project. Or you could cut away the white and have a cut out or silhouette type project. I will always study a pattern before I cut it. Sometimes you will come across a pattern that does not have any shading or black at all. I will study it and decide which is the waste and which is the project. Sometimes I will even shade the project side just to keep track of the pattern.2 points -

Newly retired

Been retired 3.5 years now. My cardiac surgery really sped up the process, but I was ready to go at that point anyway. I do cardiac rehab at least 4 mornings a week and we now have the freedom to go or stay. And today is another date with the granddaughter and then her new brother will be here in July. (The other grandparents are not retired, so we get first call on days like this)1 point -

I did the exact same thing on the walnut bowl that I just finished. Luckily, I caught it in time, as the glue had not yet set. Nice bowl though!1 point -
If you want to cut out the letters, you need a font suitable for scroll sawing, meaning it can't have any 'floaters'. For example, if you want to cut an O from this font, you'd need to cut the inner circle, then the outer circle, leaving you with a big cut out circle and an o that you have to glue in separately because it doesn't have a connection to the O . If you use a font like this, you just have to cut along the black lines because all the potential floaters are connected to the 'background'.1 point

It still looks like a good bowl to me. I did something like that once. I cut the bottom off on the and saw, sanded, and glued the bottom back in place.1 point -

That looks like a lot more than 134 holes, more like 1034!! LOL Next time, fold the piece of wood in half and cut the holes, then open it up and you have twice as many holes,, like using scissors on paper!! Very unique, nice job.1 point

I know a guy that owns a sawmill. He runs it with his two sons. They gave me a walnut slab 24” by 7’ by 2” thick. They also gave me two spalted curly maple boards 8” by 7’ by 4/4. I made each one a walnut bowl with a maple segmented ring from the wood they gave me. The bowl is around 9” in diameter. My wife wanted a chip and dip platter and I was able to make it from the walnut slab. The platter is around 21” in diameter.1 point
