Who else gunna jump in? We'd like to beat last year's number, especially since it's our 10 year anniversary of this awesome e-book of ornament patterns! Let me know so I can add you to the list. I don't need the patterns until Wed 11/27! I just need a show of hands. @Travis @Foxfold - Received @meflick @MrsN- 39 replies

Awesome! I look forward to seeing what you come up with. All the info is in the first post. We need it appropriate ornament size, which is around 3.5-4" You can send it as a JPG or PNG in black or white. Or you can save me some formatting time and send me the SVG if you designed it in Inkscape. You can email it to me or PM it to me.- 39 replies

Whenever I think of November, I think of farms and their harvest, and the ranchers getting things ready for the winter ahead. I think of apple orchards, pumpkin patches, and tractors plowing the fields. So this month, our scroll saw challenge is about the farmer. It's open to your own interpretation. What does it mean to you? Do you think of the animals, old tractors, beat up ol' trucks, old barns, farm house decor, or a lazy Sunday afternoon fishing at the creek? Post a project with that theme. Did you grow up on a farm? If so, let us know when you post a picture of your project, and tell us a little about it. I look forward to seeing what y'all come up with. And while you think about it, I'll leave you with song.

Ornaments For Charity Pattern Drive - 2019

Last year, we had 11 Designers. I'm hoping to get at least that many again. Do you think we can hit 15 designers? If so, that's 75 more patterns in this year's ebook to at total of 380 patterns. I'm designing! Who else is in?- 39 replies

Holy Cow! This will be our 10th anniversary of publishing the Ornaments For Charity ebook! That's 10 years of scrollers giving back! We're continuing our tradition here at Scroll Saw Village by publishing our annual e-Book full of Christmas ornaments. This popular e-Book was featured in the Holiday 2014 issue of Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts magazine. Our ornament designs are exclusive to this eBook and designed by SSV members. Anyone can download the ebook in exchange for a donation to their favorite charity. Our hope is that we'd be able to raise some money for very worthy causes and provide some cool patterns at the same time. *** But we need your help! *** We need some volunteers to design some ornaments. Each designer will provide 5 patterns (no more, no less) I ask that the designs are not made available anywhere else (this gives value to the e-book) They have to be designed specifically by you (no posting other people's patterns) Designs must be emailed (or PM) to Travis by Wednesday, November 27st (info below) A few things to keep in mind: Religious and secular designs are accepted. Other religions/traditions also celebrate this time of year, so let's not forget them. Keep detail and size appropriate for an ornament. Don't submit copyrighted or licensed patterns. The due date will sneak up on you quicker than you think. Please get them to me ASAP so I have time to work on them. What do you get in exchange? Credit for your design. The warm fuzzy feeling that you're helping others in need. Submitting your ornaments: Email the ornaments directly to Travis (travis [at] scrollsawvillage.com) or PM me. Formats accepted are JPG, PNG. Please keep the pattern in black & white only (no gray) . That way I can convert them easier when putting together the ebook. I'll also accept Inkscape files (SVG). This is ideal if you know how to use Inkscape. That way I don't have to manually convert them.

Tiny spooks and goblins will be at our doorstep soon. We must prepare to ward off these little monsters with laughs, giggles, and treats. Share your Halloween scroll saw project with the rest of us, so we may better arm ourselves with Halloween delights. I normally ask for you to share a little story about your project, but not this time. Instead, share some progress pictures so we can see your wicked skills. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Paper cutting is very similar. If you're googling it, the term is scherenschnitte. Lots of patterns. Very cool stuff.

I removed the image of the pattern since it is a commercial pattern.

Summer vacations are over. Kids are back in school. And that means back to work, too. So this month's challenge is about the office. Make something for your home office, or your workplace. This can be anything office-like projects: pencil holders, bill organizers, clipboards, headphone stands, trays or organizers, or a nameplate for your desk or wall. Let your imagination run wild. When you post a picture, tell us what you do for a living. If you're retired, tell us what you used to do! Woodworkers come from all walks of life. It'll be fun to see what professions we all have or had.

I read through all the posts on this thread and I'm not seeing anything negative. It was a post about a pattern removal tool, and some followups on how others remove patterns. I think it was a nice start to a discussion. I agree with Ray. Sometimes when things are written in a forum, there isn't any body language or tonal inflection to add context. So, there are times when an post is misconstrued. So, I think it's is good to keep in mind when we read or write a response; how are we interpreting it, or how can what we're writing be interpreted. With that said, I think SSV is a pretty friendly group, especially compared to other groups. We have our moments where things get derailed a bit. But I feel like we're all here to help and be encouraging of others.

My son and I just got back from a week-long Boy Scout camp in Coeur d'Alene, ID. It was such a beautiful lake with amazing scenery. One of our fellow scouters extended their trip to Glacier National Park with their family. They posted some great pictures, too. This time of year always reminds me of family vacations, camping, fishing, and enjoying the great outdoors. So, this month's challenge is about the great outdoors, scenic vistas, or appreciating the great things mother nature has provided us. Post a picture of a project or pattern of what that means to you. And be sure to tell us a little bit about it, or a memory you had with your family vacations.

Lovely design. I really like it. I don't recommend copying it, though. Someone worked hard on that design. I'd hate if they lost a sale, or a visit to their website. I've had scrollers lift patterns from my cuttings before, too. It is really discouraging and easy to understand why we lose so many wonderful designers. Hopefully you can track down the designer to find the official pattern, or find a similar design. Or perhaps it will inspire your own design. Good luck!

I use CA glue when finishing pens, and boy it heats up fast! I hope you heal quickly and take good care of it.

It's starting to feel like summer! So this month's challenge is Summertime Fun! Post a project that screams summertime! What does summer mean to you? Does it mean backyard grilling and picnics? Splashing around at the local swimming hole? Trip to the beach, or some camping in the mountains? Grandkids coming for a visit? Or maybe you're going to hit the road for a nice vacation. Post your summertime scroll saw projects and tell us a little bit about your project and why you made it. I love the stories behind the project.

I brush it on, let it soak for a little bit, then wipe off the excess. I'll do it 2 or 3 times with some dry time in between. Since it's a penetrating oil and not a film finish, a foam brush won't make any difference. 'Course, Let the rags dry out before discarding to avoid a fire with spontaneous combustion.

Portraits of celebrities & athletes have their likeness protected. They're basically a business themselves. Marilyn Monroe is a great example. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is another. If nothing else, the photo the pattern is based on is copyrighted by the photographer. As craftsmen, we don't have a right to their likeness. Now it is a tossup as to whether you'll get in trouble or not. There are agencies that just scour for stuff like this. They make their money on settlements (rarely going to court), and they split it with the rights owner. It's also important for the rights owner to police their IP, otherwise it can slip into the public domain and lose their copyright or trademark. I think for the vast majority of portraits, it's unlikely that they'll say anything. But there are a few that we try to avoid on SSV. Dale Earnhardt Jr by his car or in his jumpsuit is asking for trouble. Licensed characters from movies or comics, album art, or even certain music personalities might be a problem. Sports teams are notoriously bad. That is why SSV has our copyright policies as we do. I don't think I'd be held liable for something someone else posts on the forum, but they can certainly make my life miserable. Remember, you don't need to win a court case...you just need to run your opponent out of money and the will to fight. But you're right, you can't mention Tim McGraw if you have a portrait for sale, which also means nobody going to find your product. There's a pretty well known portrait designer, who does amazingly beautiful work of celebrities and licensed characters. You'll also notice how the order sheet isn't a normal text document or on website...instead it is an image with a thumbnail photo of the pattern code next to it. The reason for this is webcrawler bots can't read them, and unlikely to be seen by the agencies trolling for violations. Luckily for him, he's well known and makes most of his sales through private channels. He's what you mean when you say "I know a guy."

Ahh....summer is upon us. Let's make something for Dad. This month's challenge is making something Dads like. Is it BBQ gear, a cool beer caddy, a portrait of a fancy car, or a sign for his man cave? Post a picture of a project that would make him smile. When you do, mention who it's for and why you made it. We love the stores behind the projects.

Spring is in the air! This is my favorite time of the year. I can open the garage door to my shop and enjoy the weather. This month's challenge is a celebration of spring! Post your spring-themed project such as flowers, butterflies, birds, or whatever brings fond memories of this time of year. Be sure to tell us a little something about your project too. We enjoy the stories behind the project as much as the project itself. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

You'll have fun with it. I have an XCarve and really like it. It's a lot of fun to mix woodwoking and computers. One thing I have found, it isn't fast by any means. But on the plus side, it can be working while you're working on other things. It's great for v-carving signs, which will help your business a lot (they're great sellers). It's also really great for making templates for larger woodworking projects. I even use it for making dados and rabits when I'm too lazy to do it the proper way....it takes a lot more time, but super accurate.
-
Ahhh...that's probably true. I guess I wasn't paying that close attention...LOL. Little things like that change whenever we upgrade software. It's tricky to keep track of what changed.
-
Huh...things keep changing by the hour...LOL. I'm glad to see they're coming back, though. They've been around for so long, I'd hate to see a great resource like that go. It seems like they add a lot of support for local clubs, which is really cool. Especially for insurance and the other admin stuff clubs need to function. A lot of work goes into making these things happen. I'm glad to see someone was able to step up to keep it going.

I guess I don't remember the part you're referring to. There's a button that says Go To Topic Listing, which takes you to the forum list of topics. There's also a bread crumb trail at the bottom that shows where you are in the forums, so you can click back to Town Square or Forums. Is that what you're seeing? Or is something missing? Are you looking at SSV on a desktop, tablet, or phone?
