I've had a Shopsmith since '82, although I don't have the scroll saw. (I've replaced the belts once and the switch twice in all those years.) Head over to the Shopsmith forum, there are lots of knowledgeable folks there and I know some of them have the scroll saw. Congrats on the new shop space. The prices of LED lamps are coming down so you might find some T-8 shop lights for next to nothing on CL. Be sure to send pics as you organize. Be well.

To be clear you chuck the WTB 'micro chuck' into the standard Jacobs chuck on your drill press, correct?

With fret work we all drill lots of holes. Neither of my hand drills nor my Shopsmith (which is my drill press) have chucks which will hold the smaller size bits under 1/16". No doubt some of you have adapters that can be used in a standard drill press but the adapter will go to zero. What do you have/recommend and where did you find them? Thanks for reading.

There are lots of good suggestions here. I'd say you should do some practice finishing to try some of these. There are certainly others like shellac that haven't been mentioned. There are lots of choices. You can even glue a sample together after finishing to see how it holds with various finishes. I've been woodworking since 1980 and I'm still learning and trying new ways to make and finish projects. Excellent cutting!

SCROLL SAW----FEEDING FROM TOP OR BOTTOM?

When I had my Delta I always bottom feed but with my new Excalibur I'm trying both - no decision yet. -
I made this project for my sweetheart. This is a Steve Good design. I took the liberty of substituting a different font and I cut a shallow mortise in the base so the cutting could be glued into position. The stock is big box cedar left over from a bench I made a couple years ago. The finish is just Watco Natural. I asked for help elsewhere in SSV about the backer and everyone had great info. In the end I found this glittery red foam sheet product (at JoAnn's Fabric) that I thought added some 'bling'. (This was my first project with my new Excalibur 21. What a difference from my old Delta.) Comments and suggestions welcome. Thx for looking and stay warm.

Thanks to one and all for your comments and suggestions. In the end I went to JoAnn's Fabric and found this item that I thought added some 'bling' to the project. It glued find and was easy to cut with scissors or an xacto knife. It was a couple of bucks. I posted a couple pictures of the final project under the section "bragging rights".

Nice work. Was the oak stained or oiled or??? It's great to have something personal at work, it reminds you why your there. Back when I went to the 'office' every day I always kept lots of pictures of the family.

I was think I could put different colors of construction paper behind and get an idea, before I drag out a can of paint. But black certainly seems like the color of choice and I can see why now. Thanks.

I'm working on this Steve Good pattern and because I don't have nearly the experience with scroll work as many of you I wanted an opinion on the backer color. The stock is a bit over 1/4" so it's a long way to the backer color. It looks like Steve used a black or dark brown. But if you are not looking directly at the cutting it's hard to see any backer color. At first I thought red would be good but for visibility perhaps white? Anyway please give me you opinions and reasons if you care to share. Thanks for reading. I don't know what happened to the picture, it was there when I previewed? I agree with Dan, no need for biscuits. And in a puzzle project (although I've never done a puzzle) I would think they might show? In addition to jointer or router table, you can joint stock with a hand plane. Google 'jointing with a hand plane'. Good luck with your project. I got a nice piece of padauk for Christmas from my daughter, I'm looking for the right project.

I'm a pretty big fan of following the manufactures instructions regarding lubrication. I have a new model EX-21 and except for a couple of items (blade tension lever and trunnions) there is nothing to be done other than cleaning. The manual says, "The bearings in the drive mechanism are sealed and permanently lubricated and do not need to be oiled or greased."

My shop is in the lower level of a split entry house (formerly a bedroom). I can't get sheet goods into the house so I always cut them (with a track saw) in the garage. I will do assembly in the garage too if I think I won't be able to get the project around the corners and up the stairs. That entertainment unit I built this fall was in that category and bookshelves are often too tall for the lower basement ceilings. I have forced air heat and permanently sealed both the incoming and return vents for HVAC. I also vacuum the shop floor at the end of every day nearly to minimize dust getting out.

This question is for Excalibur owners who use the saw on the stand. For a long time I had a lower end Delta and mounted it to my bench. I put a 2 x 2 under the rear of the saw, tipping the saw towards me. I like that position. Has anyone with an Excalibur and the standard stand done anything to tip the saw? How'd you approach the problem? Any pics to help me? Thanks for reading.

Just out of curiosity, how do you listen to music with a saw going and some dust collector running too? Don't you wear hearing protection?

I use a cabinet scrapper quite often, but never on a scroll saw project.

I began woodworking in 1980 and I did my first scroll saw projects about 15 years ago. That said, I don't have near the experience scrolling as many of those regulars in The Village. I only do a few projects a year whereas many of you do several each week! So the years ╪ experience.

It would be great if you'd share some of your older designs, no doubt you have samples. Christmas ornaments was were I began.
