  1. Hi Marc welcome to the site. Any story behind the nick name? (crash landing)
  2. I cut them with a chainsaw then sanded smooth. (started with 60 grit belt sander, then kept going up to 220 grit). I didn't want to use the plainer because I was afraid it would tear off the bark. Plus I let them dry first before sanding and they warp as they dry which would never work in a plainer.
  3. Inside to outside smallest to largest. Either direction. The piece dictates the direction cutting more fragile pieces first. I don't think I'm any better one way or the other.
  4. I hvn't been on here in a while but I wanted to share this one with you all. The wolf pic might just be my favorite project thus far. These are slices of a black walnut tree about 13-14 inches in diameter. one with a cougar and one with a wolf and trees cut out. the cougar one is about an inch thick, the wolf is about half an inch or less in some spots. I put a 1/4" thick baltic birch plywood backer board painted black on the back of each to keep it from falling apart. the cougar slice checked really bad and would be 2 pieces if not for the backer. plus the backer gives the nice black background contrast and a way to put a strong hanger on it too.
  5. Welcome to the village. This is a great place to hang out and to learn this craft. There are plenty of very talented people on this site. as far as making a business out of scrollsawing, all I can say is be ready for a rough road. From my limited experience, it will be VERY difficult to make enough money at this for it to be a full time job. I make some money, mostly feeds my hobbies (which is a good thing) but that's about it. definelty can't quit my day job. Again welcome to the site! mike
  6. Looks real nice
  7. That looks awesome. Also looks like a lit of work! Mind me asking what you charge for one?
  8. I got the pattern from finescrollsaw.com. The pattern is actually for a shelf but i only used the train portion. It's a gift for my father in law he goes nuts over trains.
  9. I have been using this for a while now, it's awesome. Only fee is the 2.75% per transaction. They transfer your money at the end of each business day to your account. I have had no issues.
  10. I like it very much. Great job
  11. I also want to say thanks to grampa for help with the pattern of the copter!
  12. A guy I work with is leaving for another job and we were putting some stuff together for a going away gift and I thought I'd make him a wall plaque. It's a picture of our helicopter with the base name across the top. I put his nickname (Opie) in there and the years of service. He gets this this Thursday. I'm very happy with it almost don't want to give it away! LOL
  13. Baltic birch ply, some it stained for effect. The first train I used walnut for all the dark pieces, I think I like that better than the stained version.
  14. Same here looks great! If they don't turn I might have to see if there is a way to make em turn.
  15. That's a great idea! Love it
  16. I always hated doing compound cuts, then I got my Excalibur scrollsaw and they all of a sudden just work. Compound cut items are cool And people seem amazed by them
  17. This was an experiment, I'm going cut a large piece with bark on the top and bottom and cut a more detailed scene to make a wall hanging. I'm thinking it would look pretty cool.
  18. really I don't visit any other ones, I searched around for a while trying to find a good place to go. I simply don't ahve that much time to go to multiple sites. This site seems to provide a little of everything I need.
  19. As some of you might remember I made the Victorian train from finescrollsaw.com. Well I thought it would look cool if it had a passenger car, but he doesn't have a pattern for one so I made one myself. Here are a couple pics
  20. I took a steve good pattern and adapted it to a 1/2 inch thick piece of oak that has one side with the bark on it. (a piece I milled myself with a chainsaw mill) Because of it's thickness it stands alone. I think the bark top side really makes it look good
  21. Blue painters tape on the wood, spray glue on the pattern, wait a couple seconds and stick. Thats it
  22. Wow!!! Very nice
  23. Very nice!
  24. Read your post again; I don't know of any "bad" blades. I never use pinned blades, there not bad you just have to make a big hole to accommodate the pin. And in a lot of work you don't want big holes.
