  1. I like candle wax ,and shelf paper.coursest blade the thickness warrants.with steady advancing feed ,staying in one spot bad idea!
  2. Well ,Here's where I get into trouble ,IF ,I say IF .I think ,I need to stain a project ,involving fret work ,I will stain the board first ,and put a seal coat ,before I do any cutting ,Yes it will be lighter ,but even and a lot smoother ,and to me at least adds a high lite to ANY back drop ,or backer,w/o any blotching and bleed over ,that I think looks worse and is not always semi-controlable .The more intricate the worst effect with bleeding while trying to get coverage in all the nooks and cranies ,as one of our members puts it ,it's my style ,but sure saves alot of unforseen ill-effects ! Lesser of two evils IMHO! Saves a lot of time and Heart break. All the above work well when staining ,type and prep depend on the piece. Good luck ,and have fun which ever way you decide to go!
  3. Finished 4 level project ,w/p pix under opinions wanted ,major personality changes through out process !
  4. Now that looks like a dollar two fifty if I every saw it,I get scared at the prices of wood ,it's no wonder everything is mbf or partical board .Looks like some well grained and clear stuff ,nice be careful .
  5. I usually buy for intended use ,hd ,if going to use a lot and need some precision ,for occasional use cheapest I can find ,But use lightly ,don't over power and expect it to last ,I have a lot of hf and off brand occasional tools and they do the job .I have found one of the handiest tools to be 4 1/2" grinders ,I have two good ones & 4 cheap ones four are bench mounter ,1 Wire brush ,1 grinding disc ,1 sanding disc , 1 cut off disc ,There fantastic, I rarely use my bench grinders with stone and wire wheels any more even the cheapest Hf don't stall and slow like the bench grinders .So ,I'd jump on it ,just go easy and it will serve you well for many yrs. Thier a lot like your scroll saw ,you can't force that either ,let it maintain it speed hen your using it if it slows down back off a little ,and keep your disc or belt clean or changed .Thats the major reason for any tool failure ,over feeding them ,
  6. By the look of the weather maps ,We ain't done yet ,sheesee I am so tired of this stuff ! Bet you are TOO!!!!
  7. Identifing the slipage problem is the problem ,brute force is seldom a good answer ,the addition of the knob ,is mainly for people with grip and pain issues in thier hand or due to repeated hundred hole changes cause hand problem's ,everything you modify ,you also have to modify the control to stay with the limits of the force required in its use ,If you can't control it DON'T USE IT ! Like everything else It has its place and can save some people a lot of grief and allow them to do things they can do with out some kind of aide .What works for ME may not for YOU ,and vice versa ,Find what works for YOU .!
  8. Doug ,I had this 90% done and bumped the escape key and lose it ,so If I am a little short you will undertstand ,The Blue blade caddy .consists of 3 -8"scrolled discs round .the thrtee discs have a center hole 1/4" --2 are stacked and perimeter drilled 1/2" in from edge to outside edge of 5/8"hole -3/8" spacing between holes all the way around .(I got 24 holes) I cut 24 pcs. of cpvc pipe 4 1/4 " w/30 degree angle on one end ,stack all three discs at 90 degrees from each other 1' in from ring drill 4 holes for spacer bolt holes ,cut 4 pcs. cpvc 3-1/8" long (keep your two multi drilled discs taped to gether as drilled to avoid misallignment of holes for tubes ,mark w/ you separate so you can maintain hole pattern allignment) separate and install spacers between thetwo multihile disc w/3rd as a stop on the bottom and bolt together ,install tubes rotate tube all facing out ,add glue as needed to keep in position ,lift knob thru center hole sit on lazy susan or on a bottom swivel pivot of your choice. The narrow different size tube organizer is a 2"x3 12" plastic box chanel layed out and drilled to fit different size pipes I choice to put wanted stuff in .not drill thru but glued to bottom inside of channel ,any size or mix to your use or need . I think I cound have built them in the time it took to try and detail ,I hope you can find the time ,they work really well . OH! after your round one is put together ,I took packing tape and circled the tubes three times then added my blade lablels and added another wrap of packing tape to protect labels ,if you ever want to redo just change stickers and recover ! Any question just holler !
  9. How about any body that tries this ,post your uses and results !!
  10. Most poly is not recomended for out side use ,you would be better off with marine varnish !
  11. Clean ,the clamp tip ,and the blade ends ,w/ alcohol ,or mineral spirits ,excessive heat on the blade will allow it to stretch lessening the tention ,check work see if there is a bow ,usually caused by side ward pressure while cutting .If tention knob is not moving from set point,it's blade slippage ,either you only had silght contact on the clamp ,Blade not all the way back in the clamp ,or slipage from oil on contact area ,listening to your saw change sound as you cut is first indication of slippage .If your tention indicator is moving off set point go to( Ricks scroll saw) on this forum ,vast wealth of information on the 788 Excellent ,There are probabably 30 posts on this subject here on this site under tools and blades or info exchange ,just look at older pages .Reviewing these older pages will save you a lot of frustration and delays ,most everything is covered you can think of ! I hope that helps ,post some pix of your projects when you can ,Good luck !!
  12. I think its steve goods site
  13. I got an E=mail from scrollshop ,about the new owners and the new saws ,they are building ,very well done video a lot of interesting stuff about blade alignment pro n cons well worth viewing ,straight forward honest rewiew of many areas of interest to any scroller ,The saw is impressive ,the price more so may be justifiable for some of you pros ,my 788 is like my 30 ott6 .I have little need for a sniper rifle ,I don't plan to shoot 1000 +yds ,nor cut 6 hrs a day every day .If you do ,looks like a good option ,I just can't begin to justify the price ,difference 3 times ! I am in no way knocking the saw in any way ,very impressed with the video and the owners presentation .the video is excellent and well worth watching .

  17. I have always wanted to be able to swap details on some of my projects ,after completion for one reason or another .I just completed this one ,While I liked it ,I felt the flower was wrong ,and the background was too dark .The actual swap took 5 mins.after the new flowers and leaves were carved and the back ground changed .See which you like ,as I can change back in 5 mins.
  18. Zen ,Commitment is the word ! They other is IGNORANCE ,the ability to Ignore the small stuff, like What you had fo supper a week ago tuesday , We are all different ,some things we each have and do ,will not change ,IGNORE the small stuff ,If you won't remember it two weeks from now ,Ignore it ,ENJOY the good STUFF !The last time I checked (believe it or not) I had a flaw or TWO ,OK ,maybe 3 or four !Thanks !!
  19. Thanks Everybody ,I was concerned about three thing as I made this (1) Getting the back ground right (2) the flower type (3) time till 2 -14 . I decided to try something different ,and make the back ground and the flower easily changeable ,w/o damage to the bird or frame , In 5 minutes I can change either or both ,We are iced in here ,thinking about carving a trumpet style flower or two and back ground variations .I still have a couple days before and I'm set if it takes longer !

  24. Every summer ,we are fortunate to have 8 or 10 humming bird visit our large front porch ,they fly in and zoom the sixty ft length and stop and visit my wife ,in between the feeders and the hybiscos ,and the canas and the pond ,they spend quite a bit of time here which she loves .I dicided to make her one for in the house ,just got it roughed out this morning ,in between watching the unwelcome 3" of snow fall . See what you think ! I have not done a scroll saw carving in a while .
