  1. I too want wish all our Village family a HAPPY THANKSGIVING. It seems so strange to be spending Thanksgiving where the temperature is 80 degrees as it is here in Chandler AZ. Dick heppnerguy
  2. Nice pieces. Fun how pieces of wood become keep sakes. All these items look great. Can't wait to see them finished as that part is still a struggle for me Dick heppnerguy
  3. I was told there also was a table used but I have yet to see a photo of that. We had way to many things to display for the space we had. I probably would have gotten two spaces if I were there. It was a good thing Theresa picked up the shelf display or it would have been really crowded. She did better than I would have done on my own. Not sure I want to do another one after this year, just not my thing Dick heppnerguy
  4. One last remark from me. What I have found is that scrolling is a conditional learning experience. Just when I r Think I have things pretty well figured out, I find I will learn something new. Often from threads like this one, or questions and answers on something I never even thought about before. I love all the knowledge that is shared so generously on this sight. A newbies question opens new ideas from others. Thank you for everyone's openness to sharing with others here Dick heppnerguy
  5. Another thought ............for me, nothing is more boring than doing something repeatedly that doesn't bring some kind of satisfaction for me. The suggestion of making alphabets would be GREAT practice for learning to cut on the scroll saw but I would probably lose interest really quickly. That being said, starting with a simple project, like cutting a name plaque, would not only be a practice in cutting on the saw but also would deliver instant satisfaction and that would enthuse me to want to cut my next piece right away. Reading and learning about something from the experienced people is probably a faster way to understand something, but for me, I usually am after the "instant satisfaction" things. That is just my mentality but probably not the best idea for everyone. I am the kind of person that gets something that is maybe new technology and I want to take it out of the box and have it work without having to read a manual while my new fun thing sits on my desk waiting for me to figure it out. Maybe it is a lazy part of me or maybe it is a lack of patience, I am not sure, but I do know is it is way I am wired. Dick heppnerguy
  6. Rather than books, I would recommend checking out the tutorial videos here and on YouTube. There is so much there. Steve Good also is a great place to check out. Stevens sight is www.scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com. He also has a lot of easy patterns and good videos as well. Me suggestions are all free and you will get a lot more patterns and information than you will from any book. Dick heppnerguy
  7. Scott, glad things went well. Your display is inviting and has a nice variety of things to pick from. It is no wonder why you did well. Thanks for posting the photos. Dick Heppnerguy
  8. A big welcome from Eastern Oregon. I want to first thank you for your service, it sounds like you had an interesting service and probably can tell a lot of fun stories about it too. Nice that you are able to start out with a great saw and shop. Having been a machinist, you are probably a precisioned worker, resulting in some fine pieces of scrolling to share with all of us. Hope you log in often and enjoy posting and replying to others posts. This will result in a lot of new friends that are fun people as well Dick heppnerguy
  9. glad to see you finally stepped out of the shadows and decided to become a part of our friendly world wide family of strollers. Hope to see you around often. Dick heppnerguy
  10. Welcome to The Village. So glad you found us. We all hope you make it a habit to log on often so all of us get to know you better and visa versa. Lots to see and do here. Feel free to explore everything you can find here and soon you will get to understand why there are so many people one this sight Dick heppnerguy
  11. Sean, The people here are extremelyfriendly, helpful and encouraging. So all you have to do is come back often and get to know everyone. There are a lot of things you can learn here and leave yourself open to asking for any help about anything you may not know that answer to when it comes to scrolling. What kind of saw do you have? The correct blade to use for the wood you are cutting makes all the difference in the success of your projects. In case you may not be aware of which blades to use, the first thing one needs to learn is ......don't buy your blades at the bid box stores because they simply do not sell what you need. Lots of patterns you can download for free to cut, here. Keep in contact and respond to others posts and quickly you will feel right at home here Dick heppnerguy
  12. Welcome to The Village, Tim. You will soon find that changing blades has just become a lot easier as you get comfortable with your DeWalt. The biggest helper I learned with mine is to take a piece of 2 X 4, about 12 inches long and use it to hold the upper arm up as you go to hole by hole or change the blade. After an extremely short time, it become automatic and you don't even know you are using it. It frees up both hands and costs zero. Thank you for all your years of servicing in the military. Can't wait to see what you enjoy cutting. Log on often and continue to post, that is the way we all get to know each other. Any questions about ANYTHING to do with wood working. Dick heppnerguy
  13. Welcome, Jim from sunny Phoenix,AZ. Actually I live in Eastern Oregon, but we are on a short visit, now. I know if you log into The Village on a regular basis, you will find yourself surrounded by a huge family of really nice and also sharing people. Take time to explore every nook and cranny here and discover all that is offered. Hundreds of free patterns to download and cut as well as many tutorials, as well. Hope to see you often Dick heppnerguy
  14. I also use a lot of Alder and it is one of my favorite woods. I do not find it to need much sanding as it seems to come out really nice for me. I don't mind using several blades when necessary as a sharp blade equals a nice finished piece. I sometimes use a small blade like O/2 and still find it cuts nicely. I am amazed by your problems Dick heppnerguy
  15. I told Theresa about the comments on here asking about her. I will ask her to take and post some photos. I do not expect a good show as there are so many pieces and I do not see how she will be able to make a display that will do that number of things to be displayed in an orderly manner. But we will see. she is so busy working the three jobs. the table cost is only $10 and it is pretty close by. it is in a really small town and I have never been to one of their sales so we will all know when I get back to town on Dec 1st Thanks for all the good wishes for a good show, though. I do appreciate the thought Dick heppnerguy
  16. Paul, you have such a good sense of humor.. It certainly would have been funny to say the least.. Dick heppnerguy
  17. Some really interesting stories started by the nice plaque of remembrances for a father and family that served a lot of time for us all. I too served in the Army paratroopers for three years but all the time i was in, things were peaceful for us. I kid that other countries must have heard that I was in the Army and knew they needed to keep peaceful for a little while. Shortly after I got out , the Cuban missile crises started. To all the people that served, I am deeply grateful. Too bad there is a need for a military anywhere in the world but glad there are people out there that care enough to serve. Dick heppnerguy
  18. Nothing hits home a hard as experiencing a serious medical problem or the loss of a loved one. So glad that cancer is not the diagnosis for her. It sure gives one a wake up call about how much time we do or do not spend with our spouse. Thank God for the blessing of each other, that He has given to both of you. Things might have been so much worse. I hope she has a quick recovery and I will pray for comfort for both of you... Dick heppnerguy
  19. Hans. So glad you are with us again. I really missed all the wonderful work you do. When I saw you had posted a piece, I was excited to view it, as I knew it would be an exciting cut, and of course, it is . Another outstanding job, my friend.. Dick heppnerguy
  20. Very well done. Kevin.. It sure looks delicate though.. What is that font name.. You have used it before and it is a really attractive font. Dick heppnerguy
  21. I am not a dragon person, if you know what I mean, but this piece is so cute... I have to say, I really like it.. Dick heppnerguy
  22. I liked this pattern when I saw it on Steve's sight but I had the same feeling about the light box. Glad you crarified that one for me.. I think I am going to give this a try too. just for the fun of it. Your looks really good Dick heppnerguy
  23. Yesterday morning I received a request for this Steve Good pattern, to be sent to Japan. I have things all over different parts of Europe but this will be my first one going to Japan. Since I am going on vacation to AZ. tomorrow, I had to get right on it and have it ready to mail today. Well all got done and I have to say, I am pleased with the results, especially under the pressure of little time to get on it. I do want to add that I especially liked the baseball base plate. I thought that was a nice touch by Steve Good that I would not have thought of myself, as i just am not very creative. So glad others have that talent. While I am gone, my daughter, Theresa and her sister will be doing the craft show. I am so glad I do not have to do that myself. There is way too many items for the table she has so I guess it will be an interesting challenge for her. Dick heppnerguy
  24. You know what? I have tried probably everything but the burning of fuzzies. I recently found a blade that does not leave fuzzies but when i cut a piece as delecate as this one, it requires a spiral blade and they are by far the worse for that. Perhaps if I continue to try these patterns, I will NEED to go get on of those torches. Thanks for the reminder Dick heppnerguy
