Have you tried taking some of the saw body apart and taken a physical look at the inside.. It is easy to do and I can give you a link as to how to do that, it you need it. Might be a broken part inside or you might recheck everything external once more before going for the inside. Try moving the extended part where the blade connects, up and down by hand and see if it moves freely. Also double check the outlet and make sure it is hot and not tripped. If you have a meter you can take off the switch control, Only 4 torx screws and see if you are actually getting power there or if a wire has come loose of broke.. Dick heppnerguy

Small bits as possible along with smaller blades, in conjunction with the other hints all work together to handle these situations. I use a number 1 to a 3/0 spiral blade or if you are not comfortable with spirals, try 2/0 flat blades. This combination makes this type of pattern a pretty easy cut. Paul, Scrappile, told me he files the en of these blades to a point to help his blades go through the small drilled holes easier Dick heppnerguy

Enjoyed reading your post to me. It is interesting story about how you got into scrolling. Here is my story......should you decide to read it........thirty years ago I was in a small Oregon town Celebration where some people had some booths where they were selling different things, now don't get ahead of me here. I came upon a booth filled with intarsia dogs. I was in awe and could not believe anyone could make anything so beautiful out of wood. I never forget them. Twenty some years later I saw something close to them except they were segmentation pieces, in Wisconsin. Shortly after that I tried furniture making and build a large shop. I retired and a year later we moved. I already decided furniture making was too expensive and took up more space then I now had. I now only had a 16 X 16 shop and then I remembered those intarsia dogs again and took up that hobby. After 7 years I started getting a little tired of intarsia but liked the scroll saw a lot. The problem was I thought of scrolling as little block like silhouettes of animals that did not interest me. Then I came across Steve Goods page and saw his heart shaped boxes that looked like they were made of woven material and could not believe that they could be made on a scroll saw. I tried it and found out how easily it was possible to do. From then on I was hooked and never looked back. I am still learning but never stopped loving it. I still do an occasional intarsia piece but scrolling and now trying to teach myself to make patterns keeps me inspired. I started a Facebook page to help make my hobby self supporting and that has worked our very well for me. I am not interested in craft shows because I find I then from doing something I love to making it "work" instead. So as Paul Harvey used to say "Now you know the rest of the story Dick heppnerguy

If I was cutting a puzzle I would be using 1/8 inch.. 1/4 inch on a large puzzle, max.. I hope you aren't sorry you asked.... Dick heppnerguy

I went to work in my shop today to make a couple of plaques to send to our friend who lost her mother and her dad. It was 10 degrees when I fired up my wood stove and I ended up having to open the shop door for awhile because after about an hour my shop hit 87 degrees. A tad too hot. I love my little wood stove.. Charley, I enjoyed reading your story of you and your grandchildren. I believe that a lot of people look on the work we do with our scroll saws as something that is rather beyond their ability to do, that is, until they give it a try. I remember when I first tried to use the scroll saw to see if it was something I could possibly do and to my astonishment, I found that not only could I make something nice from a piece of wood but that I also enjoyed doing it. I believe when i am gone, my woodworking skills,,( as poor as they are) will be talked about and even cherished by my family. I also think that some of them will want my equipment and will also take a stab at scrolling on their own. One can offer another person the opportunity to try the scroll saw, but it HAS to be something they WANT to do as well.. Thanks for the fun read. Dick heppnerguy

Pattern making can be very challenging and a big learning experience.. I know because I myself am in the process of making an effort to learn how to do that. Just never give up and I am certain, if we both continue to make an honest effort we both will become comfortable with this endeavor. Dick heppnerguy

I would turn down an offer to cut that piece, as I don't handle humiliation very well . I would rather router out a 1/2 inch deep rectangle and then cut the eagle on 1/4 inch wood with a 1/4 in black backer board and cut that piece so it fits into the routered part perfectly and glue it place...that would be the only way I would even consider doing that chore.. Then you have an easier cut and no heavy struggles on your scroll saw table.. Dick (chicken hearted) heppnerguy

Heppner was 5 degrees this morning but warmed up to 14 degrees this afternoon. I went out and fed the horses and the cats but that was about the total of my outside strolling for today. We had 6 deer in out front yard, about 15 feet from our front room window, busy trimming our bushes,as they often do when snow covers all their food, like it has for about a week now.. and the reservoir below the house is frozen over, so I hope they have found the horses water that has a floating heater in it so it does not ice over. I will most likely fire up my little wood stove in my shop tomorrow as I have two plaques that need to be made due to a friend who's mother was found dead this morning. My shop will go from 10 degrees to 70 degrees in about a half hour and then it is nice and cozy with a dab of wood every so often. I am a really lucky scroller with an independent shop that has an air conditioner for the summer and a stove for the winter... HAPPY SCROLLING to those that can do that this time of the year Dick heppnerguy
