I didn't realize they were so popular. I have avoided them for that reason... nice order.. very well exicuted Dick heppnerguy
  6. Great one Steve. Thanks for posting it. I really wanted to see a close up of it, as you know..you did a perfect job of nailing this one, for sure Dick heppenrguy
  7. Paul. you did a fantastically great job on this beauty. Must be time for you to start making an Eiffel Tower... Dick heppnerguy
  8. I had the same problem.. it ends up being a dahhh moment for me when the light gets turned on in that thick skull of mine Dick heppnerguy
  9. It was in a magazine. Nice job on the box. glad to see people pushing their personal envelope and trying new things. that is one of the biggest satisfactions you can get. Dick heppnerguy
  10. I use painter blue tape on my top board and I like the wide tape too. I just add a piece on each edge that overlaps and sticks to the bottom board. that is how I keep my boards together for stack cutting. works good for me. I also like to use a glue stick, most of the time, instead of a spray glue because it works well and costs way less. so that makes me happy. if I have a lot of small fretwork cuts, I glue the painter tape where it will contact my pattern as well at the pattern itself and I have never had any of the pattern lift when i am cutting it Dick heppnerguy
  11. the blades that i sent to you are Flying Dutchman blades. They are double tooth blades that I like to use because they are not as aggressive as some of the others. You should get them, with the wood by the end of the week or the first of next week, Have fun with it and show us what you decide to make Dick heppnerguy
  12. Not to worry, You did not offend my in the least with your comments. I enjoy what others think. If I were going to do it over again, I probably your do exactly as you suggested. I completely agree with you. I have painted some of my cuttings and I liked it buy most of my family did not so I stay way from in when I can. It definitely would add a lot to this piece. Thanks for the comments. I really appreciate them. You never need to worry about offending me. If ever I was to think that I knew it all, I would stop learning anything, I am almost 75 years old and I know there is not enough time for me on Earth to pass up the chance to learn something form everyone I meet. 13. Baltic Birch plywood is the plywood you want to get ahold of. I am searching desperately for a supplier of this, myself. I have found some on line and the wood is priced pretty well but when the shipping is more than the product. I back off. I hunted all over the bigger town by my house (1 hour away ) and could find no one that handles it. My regular supplier is out of stock. I need some to get my Christmas project finished so i continue my search. I like to use a double tooth blade with 1/8 and 1/4 inch stock because they are not nearly as aggressive. Stack cutting slows down the aggressiveness of the blades too. I will send you a PM and perhaps I can help you our a little Dick heppnerguy
  14. for me, I do family things for free if it is for the one that is wanting it. If they are ordering it for a gift for others, I charge them what ever I would charge anyone off the street. A portrait is always worth $50 for single person like you did. I am not much of a pattern maker myself but I have done a few, somewhat successfully. Charge what you think you would pay for it if it was you buying. Not sure that helps much but it is my take on your question. Family is very valuable and you have just discovered how difficult it is to loose one of yours. i am truly sorry for your loss. You did a wonderful job on the pattern and cut. It is a great likeness Dick heppnerguy
  15. I see that you are fairly well known to some of the people here on The Village. I want to say 'Hello" and welcome you here. I hope you find time to log on often so the ones that do not know you will get to have that privilege. Please explore our site I know you will fine some things that will hold your interest and post some pictures of your work so we can appreciate your skills. . Hope to see you here often Dick heppnerguy
  16. Marg, Here is something that I do that used to scare me because I thought it would break my pieces but found it not to be the case. I use a random orbital sander with a 220 grit paper on it. After I cut my pieces I just sand them on both sides with my orbital sander and then i use a large stiff toothbrush, (one designed for false teeth) and it all only takes a couple of minutes and does a great job of r me. If you are afraid of the sander breaking the wood, I want you to know that was how I took the fuzzies off my Eiffel Tower and that was full of very small and frequent holes. it never broke a single hole. No burning, no hand sanding and no throwing away pieces. Dick heppnerguy
  17. not sure I would call it segmentation. it is just some individual pieces that are glued onto the clock in a sort of 3D effect but I didn't use the spacers to make the pieces stand out because of wrapping and shipping. i thought the pieces might get broken or knocked off so i just glued them in place and left it at that.. and I agree that It might look better with other wood choices but I use Juniper here because it was the only wood I had that was wide and long enough. I think my grandson will like it as it is. Dick heppnerguy
  18. You rock girl and getting your daughter involved is a real plus for you Dick heppnerguy
  19. I am old and pretty set in my ways. I almost always prefer the high contrast of black for my backer color, but then I also do not have a creative mind or else i would be making patterns Dick heppnerguy
  20. I like this pattern. If I remember correctly, Travis used this pattern in one of his tutorial videos. Nice pattern, and of course, coming from you we have all grown to expect it will be cut very well, which it indeed is. Dick heppnerguy
  21. there really is more color than the photo shows but you are correct that it would look better with some more colorful wood. My wood supply is dwindling and I am desperately looking for more. the problem is no one in my area carries the wood I am after and the shipping doubles the cost of what I can find. and many of my regular suppliers are out of stock right now. Dick heppnerguy
  22. the lines in the fish are cut with the saw there is nothing added to this that I have not cut.. you will some day take a shot at something like this and find you too can do this. Don't rush too fast. Do what you know you can and then when you are getting comfortable with that , push yourself to a new level and try something that looks like a 'maybe I can do that' and cut one of the patterns you like but were afraid to try. You will find that your skill level is steadily increasing and as you push your skill level even more, you will really find out that you are getting better and better, then the day comes when you realize that you probably can cut about anything you want to spend the time to cut Dick heppnerguy
  23. Kelly you have definite signs of scroll mania. It is truly fun to find out that you can take a normal piece of wood and create all these fun and wonderful things. You are correct to start off with some of the simple designs but soon you will be obliged to see if you can possibly do that more complicated patterns you have your eye on. and guess what ? if it is not a really delicate piece, you probably with find that you can make it. you will then find that you will be pushing your skill level and meeting challenges that today you may think is way way off in your future but really is not that far away. Even people who have been scrolling for a long time, still doubt their abilities that if they only gave it a try, they would find they could achieve what seems like the impossible. Dick heppnerguy
  24. My grandson is big into his aquarium so I thought this little item might be something that goes well with his interests. So I bought the pattern and made it for him. I bought this pattern for $2.50. This was the first time that i have used one of these 'put it together yourself' type clocks and was not too sure about it, but it was easy enough, even for this old guy. It probably doesn't belong in the bragging rights as it really is not a piece to brag about but I thought it was a little unusual so that was why I placed it here.. Dick heppnerguy
  25. Ralph, This project is not passed your skills as it is one hole at a time.. keeping that in mind it is just how much time you want to put into something. Patience you have, as I have seen some of your work and that should not be a problem. it is just saying that piece would be worth my time and you will find you can do it Dick heppnerguy
