  1. I won't even comment on this entry Dick heppnerguy
  2. funny thing.. I always have fed my blades from the bottom, I was watching a video of a guy before a class, demonstrating how to make an item, ( I don't even remember what they were making) , but this guy does a lot of videos, sorry I can't remember his name, never the less, he top fed. As I watched him tighten the blade, I was amazed. He had to bend down and twist his neck and almost had to be a contortionist to reattach the blade under the saw. As I watched him, I was wondering, 'why would anyone want to make such an easy job so darn difficult?'. He was using a DeWalt saw like I have. I guess it was how you started in the first time as most of us are so habit forming and I find as I get older it is even more difficult to change how I do things. Dick heppnerguy
  3. Thank you for all the nice comments. The pattern is from The Art Factory and they are quite easy to make and the pattern cost is very good. This is the sight owned by the famous pattern maker from Wisconsin that died this summer at his wedding anniversary party. Dirk Boelman and something like that. He has a lot of patterns and I am sure his wife could use any support you might give her by purchasing some patterns from her. Dick heppnerguy
  4. It is apparent that some people like the saw they own, a lot and I would hope that would be the case for every scroller, but we all know that is not the case. and sometimes one may like their saw until all of a sudden things seem to fall apart or the saw has a breakdown that is more than the owner wants to deal with again. Clayton is a good example of what I am talking about. The main value to this effort seems to be for a scroller that has a low end saw and finally feels justified to invest in a setup saw. This effort of Travis's should be a handy resource for those people or someone that is interested in starting the hobby and wants to start with a good machine. Thanks Travis for once more, making an effort to keep The Village the best scroll saw site on the net Dick heppnerguy
  5. I remember well the large fires in Washington State this summer. we too had some rather large fires here in Oregon. In Fact the town i live in, (Heppner) had a fire that burned a hillside the full length of our town. I like the idea you have and I hope you can succeed with your endeavor, it will be a nice tribute to the efforts of everyone who fought the fire or experienced a loss as a result of the fire.. I will be waiting to see how you do. but most of all be very careful. I sounds like it could be a little dangerous. Dick heppnerguy
  6. I finally finished the bulk of the family Christmas presents for the year. I was beginning to wonder if I was going to be able to beat Santa Clause this year and I made it under the wire. I am now about half way through with my last piece, unless my bride says there is another person added to my list.. Dick heppnerguy ps sorry for the blurry photo. I did not know it was that way until I got ready to post it and they are all wrapped and under the tree, so this is about as good as it can be
  7. Gator you patterns and work are really nice. I enjoyed just looking at it and appreciating how well you are doing with your pattern making skills. I just do not have much of an imagination or I would be making more effort to learn pattern making too. This is a great piece Dick heppnerguy
  8. not only is this a nicely made pattern and a great job cutting, but way more than that is knowing that every time they look at this they will remember how thoughtful you were in their tiem a great sorrow Dick heppnerguy
  9. well by New Years it sounds like you will be a rich guy.. So happy that things are going so well for you now. I know you have had a lot of struggle time and it is really good to know that things have turned around for you Dick heppnerguy
  10. Larry, I still have to give the press and seal a try, just to see how it works out. I am happy with what I am doing now but to fail to give this a try is to not be sure of the best way to do this. Dick heppnerguy
  11. Welcome Kevin. As you have already discovered, we have a large happy family here who always welcome new members. feel free to explore the entire sight there is a lot here just waiting for you to use. Craigs list usually has several scroll saws and you can find a really good buy on a saw if you do not jump to quickly. Hope to see some of your work posted here soon. Dick heppnerguy
  12. that has never been my problem, Kevin. I have never owned a flashy car. Not that It might have been fun, I am just too dang practical. Dick heppnerguy
  13. I am still finishing my Christmas gifts and then I hope to get to some of the patterns I have been itching to make. I foresee another Eiffel Tower this year too. Have to do one totally to my satisfaction. And getting more items on my Facebook page. I am just going to enjoy my shop time and seeing how my Village family is doing as I find a little more time to be on line again Dick heppnerguy
  14. I have the DeWalt and I have found that it has served me well, overall. I do not believe you can beat this saw for the price. the more I used my saw, the more I become to enjoy it. it gets a little vibration happy at high speeds but I usually do not run it up there. I was fortunate and got mine new on line about 7 years ago for $359 with free shipping. I am sure there are better saws out there but price is a factor I need to consider. It is like buying a Buick or a Lexus. Both will probably serve you well, if not abused but the Lexus has more comforts and bells and whistles. Not everyone can have 'the best of everything', and I have lived that way all my life. I like my saw and I am happy with it. It has done me quite well so far. The strength I find in my saw are the ease of maneuvering my my blades between cuts. The durability of the saw to perform to me needs. the nice size of the table. the handy controls for easy operation. On the downside, I would have to say would be the inability of the upper arm to stay up without some kind of support, for which I use a short 2 X 4 piece of wood and I do not even notice that I am using it, most of the time. it is an easy saw to work on, if I needed to replace anything and parts are readily available . I do not see this saw leaving the market, any time soon. My belief is this saw it the best saw for the money and is a good choice for some who want a good saw without having to pay a price that many of us could not justify. If one starts with a cheap saw and replaces it with a cheap saw, he or she could have purchased the DeWalt for about the same price. On a 1 to 5 grading (5 being the best ) I would give this saw an overall grade of 4 based on performance, price, ease of use and user friendly ability to be able to make my own repairs. Dick heppnerguy
  15. My wife didn't like the purple either, Oh well,, everyone is different.. I have two cans of it and thought this would be an OK time to use. it. I like it fine. All that matters is that my grandson likes it.If he doesn't it is prerogative as to what he will do with it. I am not sure as to the year of the Vet but it is a free download at www.facebook.com/oregonjibaroworkshop Dick heppnerguy
  16. I scrolled a Corvette for another grandson. Thought you might like to see it. NO? well here it is anyway Dick heppnerguy
  17. You are off and running . I am so glad you chose to cut ornaments too. Don't you feel proud of yourself and probably a little amazed that you could even do this kind of work. You rock, girl Tell you husband I send my best regards to him Dick heppnerguy
  18. It is really fun when people get excited from a gift you give someone that you made. but when you get none, it can feel a little shallow. but not all people know what to say and a thank you can be as difficult as a 'I'm Sorry' can be. I will say this, " Thank you, Kevin, for your thoughtfulness and caring about other, you don't even know " Dick heppnerguy
  19. Karen, I am proud of you and your efforts. If you need a glue stick or painters tape, let me know. I can help you, if you require it. God is good and I am happy to share with someone like you if you can use the help. it is not going to break me and besides helping others in need with what God has blessed me with is much more important than doing nothing about it when you can. Your own kidney will tell you that. Dick heppnerguy
  20. Thanks for posting your new ornament. I knew you could do it. continue to cut and to challenge yourself. You are an amazing person. I read your links and you have my admiration big time. I know few people that would give as much as you have, outside of our military service people. I continue to pray for your husband and the battle the both go through, daily. You have become my newest hero. Dick heppnerguy
  21. I cut about 20 of those name keys chains to use to mark my Christmas present with the name of the recipient. I used blue painters tape and FD double toothed penguin #3 blades and I found no problems at all cutting them. I also used the same blades to cut the chain hole and I experienced no problems there either. I, personally never use packing tape as I do not find it necessary or of any real help in any way. Keep in mind that I am an old guy and it takes some effort to get me to change the way I do things. sometimes that can be a real problem for me. I also often use a glue stick to attach a pattern to my painters tape and rarely have a pattern lift from the wood. If I do experience that problem then I just glue the tape and the back of the pattern. One thing i am also doing a lot now it spraying my pattern and putting it directly on my wood, (no packing tape ) and after I finish cutting the pattern, I heat the remaining pattern with my heat gun for a about 3 seconds and peal off the remaining pattern with ease. They I hit it with the orbital sander and no fuzzies and no glue residue. Dick heppnerguy
  22. I also like this piece. I really am not really interested in making toys, but I have found that the ones that i have made have been some of the most fun to make. good job, I know some kid will be following this one all around the house Dick heppnerguy
  23. I might as well live in South Africa too, as it is difficult to find almost anything where I live.. I hope you find just the right saw and get started on your endeavor because once you do , there is no looking back. By the way, welcome to The Village, I will be interested to see what you were able to come up with Dick heppnerguy
  24. The manuals are there and you can also get any part replacements through them. The manual should explain everything you need to understand.. They also have some new kind of blade tighteners they sell too that does not require the T handle tool, if you so desire.. Way to go Larry, I hope everything works out to your liking. Oh by the way, their parts are very reasonable and they don't gouge you for shipping Dick heppnerguy
  25. pull that pattern off very slowly and carefully, I hate it when that happens. I have found that the blue tape that Harbor Freight sells sticks really well but peals better than the brand name tape, at least if seems to for me. Dick heppnerguy Go Kevin Christmas is less than 2 weeks away
