  1. Hans. I purchased what I think is this same pattern, but I have never cut it. I really was not impressed with it on paper, but like so many other patterns, once they are cut they look better than one might expect them to come out. this is a good example of that. If I am correct, this is a larger than normal pattern, like Kevin stated above, I will have to go take another look at my pattern and see if it truly is the same one of only similar Dick heppnerguy
  2. Way to go. Keep up the good work and keep pushing your envelope. I too have had my eye on this pattern, it is a great one and so is your effort here. Dick heppnerguy
  3. I have recently purchased a Hawk but I really can not help you because I have yet to use it. I believe it is one of the best saws on the market but I really can not help you, without having used mine yet. I am sorry to hear that you have not enjoyed your DeWalt as for me, the more I use mine the more I like it. I have had mine for several years and have not had to buy any parts except for one thumb screw that holds the upper part of the blade and i attribute that to the piece that I made from Steve Good's site that I believe put more pressure on the threads than they are designed to take. No trouble with it since i stopped using it. One of the things I like about the Hawk is the blade stroke is longer than the other saws on the market and it is extremely smooth running. Did you see the video where they run the saw with a dime standing on edge, on the saw table while it ran ? More people own the Excaliber than the Hawk, but then the Hawk is about 2/3rd the price of the Hawk too. I doubt you can go wrong with either one, but I also feel that way about the DeWalt too. Good luck with what ever you choose. Dick heppnerguy
  4. Boxes are interesting to make. They are not my favorite things to make but one of my favorite items to display and to give to someone. I have 6 of my wedding boxes that are going to be in the Scroll saw magazine coming up soon. that is a nice recognition for me, as I know my work is not nearly as good as so many of the other scroller here in THE VILLAGE. There are many free box patterns out there too. I am glad you liked my little box to interest you in making one, yourself. Good luck on yours, when you decide to give it a whirl. My influencing you is a big honor to me. Dick heppnerguy
  5. Welcome Skip. You sound a lot like myself. I started scrolling after I retired and have grown to a point where my shop is one of my favorite places to be. Only draw back to that is my bride of 53 years stays in the house when I am scrolling. I make most of my things for her and I bought her an Ipad so she stays entertained as well. I have not used the saw you are talking about but I do have the DeWalt and an RBI saw. My thought is this saw you are looking at will probably serve you well. Many good scrollers here in The Village have lessor and cheaper saws that they use on a daily basis and they turn our excellent work. it is kind of like a guy can put new brakes on his car with imported tools as well as someone can with Snapon tools. Some are nicer to work with and last longer than others. I like that you have a lot of hobbies which means you are probably not one to sit all day and watch TV. Do log in as often as you can and you will quickly get to know many of the regulars here and before you know it, you too will be one of the regulars. Just be careful, as not only is scrolling addictive but so is The Village. We are one big, world wide, and very friendly, talented and helpful people like you will have a hard time finding any other place. I also would like to suggest, as i do to a lot of new people here, take time to go the the 'coffee house' because a number of our regulars hang out there just for the connection with other members and have a lot of fun sharing their stories and jokes and whatever else comes up. this is just there for the fun of all. Dick heppnerguy
  6. Very nice boxes. I really like the wonderful fret work you did Dick heppnerguy
  7. I like the way you framed your well cut Mustangs. do you what year this Mustang is ? Dick heppnerguy
  8. makes one proud to tote the suds around in fixture like either of these. I like the unique way to haul the beer and make others wonder where you got them Dick heppnerguy

A wonderful project, I have been waiting to see the finished piece. I must say, I am in no way disappointed by the way it turned out. I would call it 'OUTSTANDING' Dick heppnerguy
  10. Dennis Welcome aboard..explore, chat with other members in the coffee house and you will quickly realize that you among a lot of good people who have many skill levels and travel this web sight from all around the globe.. Relax have fun log on often Dick heppnerguy
  11. We are all happy that you have found us and already have explored at least a part of what is on The Village. Be sure to keep exploring and enjoy all that is here. Any Questions just post it and you will find that you will receive many replies. I would like to suggest that you long onto the coffee house where you will quickly get to know several of our members. I do not frequent this part of the Village very often but many regulars do. I hope to see you around often Dick heppnerguy
  12. I have heard several times that the rule of thumb is about 1/2 hour of cutting is the life of a blade. the smaller the blade, the smaller the teeth. But I also change mine blades as I notice that it is taking e some pressure on the blade to make my cuts. As soon as you put in a new blade, you can feel the resistance leave. Dull blades can stray fairly easily, and then the mistakes take place. Why scroll on a pieces for an hour or even several hours in some cases, just to screw it up over a 35 cent blade ?n Not worth it to me Dick heppnerguy
  13. It is all about the blades.. Even a cheap saw will cut pretty darn good for a little while with the right blades. but the best saw with lousy blades presents a problem. The first advice I give to a newby scroller is about purchasing the right blades...just my take on it Dick heppnerguy
  14. Glad to see you jumping and trying some things that challenge your newly developed skills. However one can get in over their heads and become discouraged Don't let that happen to you..If you do break out a piece long the way and ruin a piece or two. then just try again. Maybe a different blade would have done better or perhaps you should have stack cut your piece so that it won't cut so aggressively. Maybe you jumped ahead a little too fast and need to get more experienced before you try that kind of a cut.. or several of many other reasons that may have made your work a piece of closet art. Closet art is what I used to call my oil painting as I worked out a new technique. I really didn't want it hanging on my wall for all to see but I was happy that I was learning something new from my efforts. No matter what happens with your wood portrait, and i think you probably will end up with a very nice piece. No matter what the outcome just keep in mind every piece you cut is a learning experience and everyone has a failure, now and then.. don't take this as anything but things to consider as you scroll each piece Dick heppnerguy
  15. very nicely done... I am so glad you did this one..I really like it. Dick heppnerguy
  16. Glad to see you doing so well. Nice job on both of those. It is fun to find that you can actually do more than you thought possible, isn't it ? That what keep me scrolling. Challenging ones self is very rewarding indeed. I will stay tuned for your next post Dick heppnerguy
  17. Like you always advise everyone else.. "google" it.. I found a lot of them when I just checked it out I donett nied it miself beekus I nevre missspel notin Dick heppnerguy
  18. the word scroller strikes again with a nice batch of ornaments this time... what next..at least one does not have to hold their breath very long to find out with Kevin Dick heppnerguy
  19. fun idea.. looks like a little wood burning here Dick heppnerguy
  20. That will tug her heart for sure.. great piece Dick heppnerguy
  21. Heck with a scroll saw one would have to really want to cut themselves badly in order to do much damage to themselves, other than a nick to a finger now and then, Wouldn't you agree,Kevin? Dick heppnerguy
  22. Roly, I too was thinking the same thoughts and I just might give it a try. I am not very excited about any of the 3D patterns, personally, but my wife liked it so you know what that means. I made the first one and gave it to my daughter to take home and I have another one cut and and ready to glue so maybe I will colorize it first and post it. I am not good at colorizing things but what the heck. If I don't like it and if my wife doesn't like it I can use it to start my fire in my stove in my shop. Nothing lost there but a little time and not much material. I did post it on my Facebook page and asked for some honest opinions on it so I would know if I truly wanted to be taking the time and material to make some and I only received enthusiastic responses, some with requests for some. So there you go... Dick heppnerguy
  23. wow.. a really nice order. I would also enjoy seeing what Roly does with your great idea too Dick heppnerguy
  24. Don't need the hold down fixture that is for sure, Why invest in something you do not need? Good luck with getting everything set up and running. remember to have fun and make a lot of sawdust Dick heppnerguy
  25. I showed the new 3D ornament that Steve Good posted on his page and my wife thought she would like to have one so I went to the shop and knocked one out. I am not sure that I am very crazy about it but my wife liked it. I cut a couple of them and put one together. It was a pretty cold day and I was not planning on being in my shop very long so I just toughed it out for a little while and ended up giving this one to my daughter who is here for Thanksgiving and this weekend. I posted it on my Facebook page to see if people liked them or not. Just looking for opinions. Not offering it for sale. Dick heppnerguy
