hesitant about your ability to make an intarsia piece ??
heppnerguy replied to heppnerguy's topic in General Scroll Sawing
I started with intarsia because what I knew as scrolling did not interest me. Intarsia is not all the hard, no inside cutting and sanding takes care of most 'not fitted well' pieces. I hope more will not put it aside and give it a try. I think they will all enjoy it. Scrolling experience makes the task way easier because accuracy in the cuts, saves the more difficult task of sanding. I found it is quicker to re-cut a piece then to spend a lot of time, trying to 'make it fit' I hope to see those even considering making an intarsia piece, to try one as soon as you can. You will surprise yourself. Lee is a good example of where you can go with it, if you only try Dick heppnerguy -
Welcome, Cindy, I think you will enjoy your new saw for some time to come. Although I do not join the breakfast group very often, I encourage to you to do so , because it is a quick and fun way to get to know everyone here on The Village. explore all the site and spend some time in The University section. it is all free and will be very helpful for you as it has to almost all of us. To post a photo, click on the 'more reply options' button on the lower left of your post window and the rest should become apparent. If not, just ask, we all have struggled with the easy parts of posting , at one time or another and we all understand... Dick heppnerguy

Patrick, The best advice I can give you is to log on here often, This will keep you enthused to keep scrolling. This is a busy site and there is much to see and do here. Be sure and check out The University here. It is free and very helpful. I good place to spend your time when you are on the computer. As you already understand, this place is filled with many people from all over the world but we are all family and by logging on often, you will understand, shortly, that you too have become a part of our world wide family too. What kind of a saw did you end up buying ? Hey here is a little hint for you,,,,,,made many pieces for your wife and family. Give them with love and before long you will have so much support from them about your new hobby that when it comes time to upgrade your saw, they will be the ones to say, " go for it"... I bet the guy that placed the order and then refused it, has not lost any sleep over this whole thing, Unfortunately, I don't think that is not the case for you, Kevin. It is really worth all this fuss ? You are the only one that is miserable because of this guy. I just would not do anything else for him unless he paid up front. Case closed. The thing I like about scrolling is the personal cost to do it almost nothing. Surely not worth ruffling your feathers about. Life is way too short for that Dick heppnerguy

21 vs 16 " saw how much is the 21" needed
heppnerguy replied to herrwood's topic in General Scroll Sawing
Well, my input would be, if you can get a good price on the DeWalt, I don't think you would ever regret buying it. I have had mine for several years and has serviced me well. It seems rather senseless to me to spend a lot more money on a saw when you have this opportunity, If the saw is a good savings, then the DeWalt would be my choice, Without it to consider, i would go ahead and buy the larger of the two other saws if that were my only choice. You never mentioned what sort of price offer you got on the DeWalt though and that might effect my answer. It seems to me that if you are a conservative driver and you have a nice car with all the bells and whistles and you enjoy it but you find out about a different car that can go 160 MPH but it costs $100,000. to buy the faster car and you never speed anyway, what is the point of spending the $100,00 ? That is my point Dick heppnerguy -

I had this kind of a problem when it was really cold in my shop a couple of years ago. for some reason , it just started up again and I have not had a problem with it since. Maybe you could take the on/off switch loose and jump the wires and if that makes the saw run, it is in your switch.. lightly taps the motor.. Oh and one thing more. manually move the saw arms up and down. maybe there is something sticking inside.the saw.. No cost to try it.. good luck, I wish i was there to help you.... Dick heppnerguy

Because of these kind of things. I have been tempted to say, "I no longer take special order requests " I have always received my money, that has not been the problem, it is all the time to make a pattern and try to understand what they are after. For me, if someone says they 'that is not what I had in mind', I just say, sorry, it was how I understood your request.' I never make them feel it has anything to do with them but that I just could not read their mind. I only have had one person who did not buy what i made for them and I only apologized for my misunderstanding. However, as a result. this person continues to buy items from me but I am careful to have their approval before I go too far and have to eat a piece. Luckily, scrolling does not require a lot of expensive materials so I just rack it up to experience. Eventually I find someone who likes the non approved piece and I happily give it to them. Don't allow it to get to you, Kevin. Life is way too short to get upset about things you can not change. But believe me, I do understand the frustrations you are having Dick heppnerguy

some time a 'restore' will work. I was having a big problem with ads popping up every time I tried to go to another place. I could not find the source of the problem and then I just erased the internet browser I was using and BINGO it is gone. No more problem. But as for you, Jim. It sounds like Inkscape has not updated it's page to work with your new ops. I think you will just have to wait until they do that before you will be able to use their program again, Dick heppnerguy

My last post was of the fish I made for my friend. It was a combination of intarsia with a scrolled background. I kind of liked that idea and my daughter was after a gift for a friend of hers. She wanted a bear scene of some kind so I looked up a pattern of bears walking together. The pattern was one from JGR, which I purchased several years ago and have made 3 of them as gifts. This time I wanted to make something a little different than anything I had made or seen before so I decided to do another intarsia/scroll item. Because I already had the bear I wanted and I am not very creative, I started to search our pattern library here and see if I could find a scrolled background that I could incorporate with my bear. Thanks to the great patterns made and posted by Grampa, I used the one from his wolf pattern listed under the 'animal' folder. Thanks Paul, for posting it. I hope it was OK to incorporate it in my piece. I thought it was exactly what i was looking for. So without further ado, here is what i came up with Dick heppnerguy

Roly, I can't believe that someone in the UK has not talked to the manufacturer about selling their blades in the UK. There are so many scrollers there and through out Europe. It looks like to me that someone could do really well selling the blades and other supplies. Makes me wonder how much the postage is for blades to the UK from here. Someone needs to get the ball rolling over there. What about the Swiss made blades. I am sure that they have to be of good quality. Dick heppnerguy

Cute kitten. You did a great job here, it looks so real. Dick heppnerguy

I love this story, I hope that some of the things that I give to friends and family member are around long after I am gone and then my grandkids can tell their children. " That was made especially for me, by your great grandfather" They too might cherish my poor talents in a way similar to the way you cherish the piece your grandfather made. Lots of talent, like your grandfather or little talent like mine, it is 'who' made it that makes it a cherished item to our future family Dick heppnerguy

Very nice bowl. It was made by very skilled hands, that always put out a great item. The design and finished project are outstanding. I have to try this one some day. I just started dabbling in bowls and I am amazed how easy they are to make and quick to do. I love yours. Dick heppnerguy

You did a fine job on this piece. I love it that Steve Good has such talent and shares it so openly so untalented pattern makers, like myself can still turn out some wonderful pieces, like the one you did here Dick heppnerguy

Nice when you can score like that. I am truly lucky because my grandson owns the largest cabinet shop in the North West. I get a lot of free wood from him, whenever I am in his area. Ask Travis about the wood i gave to him when we met. He will tell you that is it really nice wood. I also have a supplier for free Poplar, I am a really lucky guy too.. Dick heppnerguy

I love scrolling and intarsia work for several reasons. First it is not expensive to get started in. It does not take a lot of space. You do not have to spend very much money on your materials. you can use others scrap wood to make things with, if you wish. I get a lot of pleasure in taking a piece of wood and being able to produce something I like in a very short time. I have a way of bringing pleasure to others with my work. and best of all, I do not have to wonder the stores to try and find something that my wife will like for her birthday, anniversary or Christmas, because there is an endless things I can make her that I know she will love having. I don't know anything else that can produce all that for me. Dick heppnerguy

It is always worth the look.. After all, I scored a Hawk saw for $65 at an estate sale. Just look, you will find something, i bet. Dick heppnerguy

21 vs 16 " saw how much is the 21" needed
heppnerguy replied to herrwood's topic in General Scroll Sawing
that is so true. If money is not a concern then go for the bigger saw. I have a 20 inch saw and only one time was there a problem cutting a longer piece but I was able to work around the lack of length. but if I did have the extra inches.. why not ? Dick heppnerguy -
Adam, welcome to The Village. I hope that you enjoy scrolling a lot as it provides a lot of enjoyment for everyone here and with a little time, it will for you too, start with simple patterns and challenge yourself to move to more difficult ones as you go along. I agree with Roly about the pin less blade saws. You will quickly notice that a saw that only uses pinned blades with be too restrictive. a lessor priced saw can help you to get the hang of things but be sure if you do buy one for under $200, that it will have a good source for replacement parts because they will be needed within a year, if you find that you are putting in hours and hours on your saw. Eventually you will see the justification for a saw upgrade. but most of us started with a cheaper saw and they served us well for quite some time. for any saw the important thing is ALWAYS USE GOOD BLADES, You will most likely need to buy them on line, but fortunately, they are not very expensive. You might inquire about your blade purchases with the many UK people that we have on this web site. I am sure they will be happy to direct you as to how to obtain the blades in the UK. I hope this helps some Dick heppnerguy
