  1. welcome to The Village. I hope you find time to hang out here and start to get acquainted with everyone and their work. If you ever need any help, someone here will be here to answer your needs. I hope we can count on you to step up and help us from time to time
  2. have to say that this is a great place to hang out. If you do, you will become a part of a great family of people who all love what you love too. How great is that ? Welcome on board
  3. It looks like the crowd has found the village. so glad we didn't loose everyone. It is good to see all you boys here, now. I always enjoy all of your knowledge and great contributions. I am lucky enough to have my own dedicated shop, just for my wood working. If only I was not my own worse enemy, it probably would not be such a mess so much of the time. Are there any good web sights for scrolling in the UK ?
  4. Thanks for the tip. Glad to see you here. I hope things will get a little more relaxing for you soon. but you know me.... I probably will forget how to do this really soon.
  5. Sully, your talents are indeed an asset for everyone here, Glad you made it. I love your great work.
  6. Richard, A big WELCOME ON BOARD. So glad to see you here. Keep coming here regularly, everyone benefits when you do, including yourself
  7. Hey really glad to see you here too.... I hope you tell others from the Free4all sight, we can always use those great people here to contribute their talents and ideas with us.
  8. It is indeed sad to see, Free for all, shutting down. We need sights like that one and this one to share our love of scrolling with others. I am sorry that I only discovered the above sight about a month or so ago. Great people there too. I am sure we will being seeing a lot of their members become members here too. It is a huge job to do there sights and takes a lot of time and effort by the people who run them. I hope Travis does not burn out. He is very busy with a new move and a new job. good to see you here, Richy
  9. I am sure you probably are doing well with your scrolling. Starting out is an experience in itself. Three secrets that I have learned is...1,) start with less difficult projects, that way you don't disappoint yourself too much. 2.) continue to gradually challenge yourself to more difficult pieces, but not too advanced at a time. 3.) Make sure you are using the right type of scroll saw blades and not the ones you find at the big builders supply stores. You can count on the people here to help you with any questions or hints you might want and no one will make fun of even the worst errors one might make. We all do better with practice and the fun of cutting only gets stronger as we progress in our abilities. Rememer "Just have fun"
  10. Marvin, if you find that scrolling is a little difficult because the wood seems to jump around, you probably are using Home Depoe blades. Most people seem to start with the blades they find at their local lumber yard. Hopefully that is not the case with you, but if it is, do yourself a favor and let someone know that here and you will be directed to the right place to buy your blades and which blades to purchase.
  11. One of the things I love about Europe are all the really old houses that people are living in. They are so nice and amazing for us in America to even imagine a structure that old still being inhabited. In America, if a house is 100 years old, it is considered old. Hope you find time to check in here on SSV often. Nice to have you on board
  12. Welcome to the SSV. I enjoy this sight a lot. Many interesting people here with great ideas and always ready to help and to share. Cut away and post your work. We love to see everyone's work and techniques. Come back often, this is your family away from your family, now, if you want it to be
  13. Kevin, What is the name of the font that you used on the "Rosa" name ? I would like to get it too.
  14. the very first scroll thing I cut was a name,,,,,just to see if I could do it. I have found that almost everyone likes their name cut in wood. I did a nice graduation piece for a girl and included her name as an additional gift. When she replied. she added, I especially like my wooden name..surprised me.
  15. Extremely interesting...I have not seen those plastic mirrors before I would be interested in finding out where to buy them. What a great display piece....a very good idea
  16. I had gone to a small town weekend celebration, about 20+ years ago where they had some vendor booths. As I walked around I came upon one where a woman had an assortment of intarsia dog breeds. I was amazed that anyone could do something like that. I retired and moved to another part of our state where we had a small 16X16 shop and I was not sure how I was going to use it. I did have a scroll saw that I had purchased years before I moved and I was not happy with it because the wood jumped up and down and changing the blades was a pain, so I just sort of gave up on it. I remembered thee wonderful intarsia dogs that I had seen so many years ago and looked it up on the internet and read about how it was done. I decided to try a simple 7 piece pattern, that I drew on my own and discovered to my amazement the I could do that sort of thing. I actually had made the item on my band saw and not on my scroll saw. To my delight, I found out about scroll saw blades that could make a difference. I purchased some blades on line and things really improved from there. I never had an interest in scrolling because I have never cared for the 'colorbook' style of patterns that I thought of when I saw scroll items. there were no shaping and kind o a simple silhouette patterns. That simply did not appeal to me and still does not to this day. Searching for free intarsia patterns, I stumbled onto Steve Good's web page where I saw some 'woven basket' patterns. How could it be possible to make something like that? I decided to try a name, first to see if I could do that satisfactorily and to my amazement I could. So it was off the world of scrolling and I have loved it every since. I still do intarsia and enjoy it, but scrolling has become my real passion.
  17. I am not sure if this is the way to write to you...I could not find your email address....I am responding about to you about help with my glueing....I am all ears and would appreciate any advice you might be willing to give to me my email address is [email protected]

  18. nicely done. I have made a few intarsia pieces and I have no problem cutting and shaping but gluing it together is another matter for me. Most often it seems that after I have cut and shaped my pieces and begin to glue it up, that is when my alignment seems to go astray and then 'here comes gaps that were not there before the glue up. I am usually only half satisfied with the outcome because I know it was 'near perfect' before the glue time. I love intarsia as a decorative piece but I do get a little discouraged with my end results. I too would love to find someone else in my area that does intarsia so I could get together with them and share experiences and Ideas. I am lucky to have, our very own Travis, now living somewhat close by me and I hope to be able to develop a friendship with him in the future...Not sure if he is open to that, but I guess I will find out soon.
  19. I enjoyed the article and plan to give it a try. I have colorized a couple of pieces without knowledge of the technique necessary to accomplish the needed results. I will re-read your above article and apply the principle to another project...thanks for sharing your techniques and knowledge with us that are less informed.
  20. very nice work.. your wood selection made the box ribbon exceptionally nice. I think I will also do the cat. For some reason it did not appeal to me but seeing your project completed, makes me desire to cut it too. thanks for posting it...
  21. I probably should start to do some sort of show sales. I did it once but trying to make sure I had a good variety of things to offer, took the fun out of scrolling and it turned into " I must make these things", instead. I much prefer to make things for gifts to family and friends and to donate to the church or help an organization for a fund raiser, however, it would be nice to maybe sell things for awhile to help recover the cost of material. I have sold a few things but only when someone comes to me and asks if I do sell things and they want something.....good luck with your sales everyone
  22. It is nice to have a dedicated place to scroll. I am fortunate to have a 16 X16 foot shop..that is all mine for scrolling. It is well insulated and has a nice window for extra light. It probably would not hurt to improve my lighting a little. I also have a small wood burning stove in it to keep me warm during the winter....now if I was only a little more organized, everything would be perfect.. Enjoy your new shop...
  23. Did you take any photos of your display ? I would be interested in seeing a couple if you did.
  24. I hope that you do get back into scrolling and a new more advanced saw will enhance your fun and production and hours in your shop....glad to have you on board here/
  25. Hello Jari, Welcome to our gang of scrollers. we are all intrerested in sharing our skills, advice and fun with each other and we are all so glad that you found us all here at the village....keep in touch
