  1. How about going with mahogany, looks much like sepele but softer, easier to cut. @octoolguy search on the internet turned up several places that sell sepele. The shipping might kill the deal though.
  2. Certainly Holly, but as mentioned, expensive and can be hard to get in large enough sizes. You might check out Basswood. It can be close, a little "creamier" colored but worth checking.
  3. I'd get a few sizes of "skip tooth" or "Super Skip tooth" blades without reverse teeth. Like #1, #3, #5 see which works the best. I like the Pegas blades for this kind of work, but I am sure other brands have equivalent. Now, keep in mind I have not done a lot of compound cutting so wait for more responses from one with more expertise. Please keep us informed on your progress. A chess set is on my to do list this year. Another note. I just purchased some Pegas blades from QTE North America, Inc. and they sent a nice blade chart of what blades a they have. They sent me the wrong blades, but I do have this nice chart... They are suppose to be sending me the correct blades.
  4. Awesome job, Charlie!
  5. Nice work Karl. I envy you in the glider.... (Checked your profile page) I know I would get sick, but I would still like to ride in one.. My son, retired F-18 SuperHornet pilot, road in one and he got sick..... coarse he use to get air sick no matter what he flew in. Always told me that is why they invented barf bags...
  6. Cool!!
  7. I think you did a fine job and I know your friends will really like it.
  8. Very beautiful pieces. Thanks for sharing them.
  9. Very nice bunch! I enjoy making them also.
  10. Great scrolling.
  11. Okay, I was hoping someone would spill the beans, but no one has mentioned where the patterns come from. I think just the heads with magnetic on the back would make cute refrig note holders. I'd like to do some, of the whole critter to have as handout gifts. Are the patterns somewhere?
  12. Great scrolling. I agree with the ones that feel letters are the hardest thing to cut. You really did an nice smooth job of them.
  13. Darn, sorry it didn't work out. I thought I made it clear to Helmut I was asking about "Old Crow Scrollwerks". Must be a misunderstanding do to languages(?).
  14. You got the "cabin" look and it looks great.
  15. Really well done.
  16. Just finished spraying this this morning. A new clock for my wife's quilt room, if she wants it. When I say I did it the hard way, I tried to stack cut the outer ring in two stacks of two sections each. Got it done an tried for two days to get the ring glued together to my satisfaction. I just could not do it, I had gaps. If I were to paint it I could have lived with it by filling the little gaps. But I didn't want it painted.. So I did the outer ring in one piece. 332 cuts if I counted correctly, for the ring. It wasn't a waste of wood because the center of the ring worked for the backer for the main clock body. Does not have a movement yet, I want to get a pendulum one. I have to figure out what I need. The pattern came from scrollsaw.com. They do not have the movement they say they do and they do not respond to messages but other than that, it is a very nice pattern and you get it via email very quickly.
  17. When you say clockwise- counter clockwise I get confused.... Do you mean do I move the wood clockwise or counter clockwise or are you talking the direction the blade is cutting??? I normally turn the wood counter-clockwise..
  18. Very nice. I won't give finish advice. I am pretty narrow on the subject. I have lots of spray cans of Deft lacquer simi-gloss, that is the extent of my real knowledge.
  19. Very nice job!
  20. I agree with one exception... I have purchased several patterns from places overseas, like from finescrollsaw.com. The first time I had the pattern sent electronically and I just could not get it to print correctly on my printer, because of differences in paper sizes. I had to have it sent to me in hard copy. But I certainly prefer the electronic, emailed files. I guess I could have downloaded the ones from other countries to a disk or something and taken them to a print shop. In the case of "finescrollsaw", Pablo only charged around $6 USA to ship the patterns..
  21. Brianr24 is correct, I did it here: Just go slowly, keep the heat gun moving so you do not scorch the wood.
  22. Very, very well done. Very unique... I have not see that done before.
  23. I keep coming back to look at this. I may have to find the pattern or very similar to it. My son got to go up for a ride in one and while sitting in the co-pilot seat, the pilot said "hey Brian, take over for me, I'll be back in a minute" and he got up in left... My son got to fly it... He says it was one of the hi-lites of his flying career. In all his many hours/years of flying though, he has not gotten to go up in a open cockpit bi-plane,,, yet. I have that one up on him, I have gotten to do it twice....
  24. I totally agree, but I am certain I do not have the talent to match up to her work...
  25. Well I certainly hope it works out for two reasons 1. I would love to see you cut and show us the old house picture.. It would be cool... 2. I hate to see DonR's patterns die out. He has lots of good ones.
