    I met the fellow who had the Hawk 226VS on Craigslist this morning and long story short, I bought it and brought it home. Now, all I have to do is figure out where to put it. Other than some surface corrosion on a couple of parts, this saw is like new. I can't wait to give it a run but first I must do the clean -up. I am open for any and all advice from you experienced Hawk owners.

    I will have a look at H/D for some of that wood. I was just trying to do something without having to make another run there. I was just there yesterday and bought a piece of mahogany. My wife saw a neat bowl that Carole Rothman posted in the SSWC magazine a couple of years ago and she wants one. If you have the mags from way back, it's issue number 60 on page 40. Thanks again for the pix.

    I know I had been forwarned but I chose to go headlong into a project today anyway. I had some scrap douglas fir 2 x 2 material that was left over from another project a couple of years ago. I wanted to do some 3-D word art on it. I ran it through my table saw to make sure it was good and square and measured 1.5" x 1.5". I stuck the pattern on it and put a brand new FD Polar #5 blade in my saw and commenced to cutting. Wow! What a nightmare. That stuff is so hard and very grainy. Long straight grain that runs from one end to the other. So far, I have gone through 3 #5 blades and then I changed to a #7 blade. That did cut better but not for long. I am about 10% done cutting and I think I'm going to fold my tent and go home. I'll wait until I have some decent wood to work with. So, for those of you who might have a bunch of old doug fir scraps laying around, use them for firewood. I wish I had.

    Kevin, when you first got your EX did you know to adjust the aggressiveness by turning the motor? Mine had a bit of vibration at full speed but once I found out about adjusting the motor and fine tuning the blade to be perpendicular to the table or as close as possible, then vibration has all but disappeared. And the addition of the Pegas clamps pretty much made the saw as smooth as it could ever be. I'm ecstatic about how smooth my saw is. I never thought I'd have a saw that ran that smoothly. Of course, I am not one to run it full speed. I have no desire to do that. I found the "sweet spot" and pretty much leave it there. I did slow it down a bit when I was doing that compound cutting on my votive holder project. And, I learned after the fact that I was using the wrong kind of blades. I was using a reverse blade without the skip tooth feature. I look forward to my next foray into 3-D cutting now that I have the correct blades.

    Ok, I don't know how far you went with the free download but I just went to their website and I read that disclaimer. I also went ahead and clicked on the dowload button. I downloaded the .exe file and could run it but I have already got it loaded on my computers. I have it on my desktop machine and my laptop. I run Windows 10 on both and also use Chrome as my browser. Give it a try and see what happens. I think it will run but at some point in time, they will stop supporting it but the basic program should not stop working. Give it a try. jing.exe

    Do you honestly feel that the factory stand was beneficial? I brought mine home and tried it just clamped to my workbench and found that it ran so smooth that I wouldn't need to do anything but build a substantial wooden stand for it. I love how it has worked out. I made sure that it would be moveable so I can take it outside during the warm summer months. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the Hawk because of the tall stand. I also have a wood floor in my shop that has some bounce to it so that may present a problem. I'm thinking of doing something out on my driveway to give me some privacy too so I may put it out there on concrete and do the sandbag thing. Just not sure yet.

    That's weird. I know they have a great software called Snagit that is expensive. The company is called Techsmith and I have found Jing to be great. Give it a try. It won't cost you a penny.

    Was that the saw that you bought new in box? Too bad but like you said, a lemon comes along in every field. I know from experience that I had with a 69 Chevelle that was almost new when I got it. It had a habit of stalling dead at the most inopportune times. It did it one too many times and it was gone.

    Well, lets hope that will take care of your problem for a good long time. Maybe now you will be able to fall in love with your EX as much as the rest of us who have them. I would not let mine go for most anything. Well maybe for $$$$$$$$$$$$$$. After I get my Hawk home tomorrow, I will have a new love affair. I hope so.

    Good luck with getting the UPS driver to wait for you to open the box. Where I live, they just drop whatever on our porch and knock a couple of times. By the time we get to the door, the truck is pulling away.

    There is a free app that you can put on your smartphone that does that. I have it on mine. It is super accurate. FREE!

    Thanks Les. It looks like I may be owning one of those saws if all goes well on Wednesday. I'll have to incorporate your idea. I look forward to trying the Hawk to see how I like it. I'm not sure where I'm going to put it yet.

    You are most welcome Les. By the way, you can move that yellow dot around to anywhere you want it. I have mine on the left side of my screen about 3 inches up from the taskbar. It never gets in the way there. Since I installed the program that Teachlearn suggested, it now lives up at the top left of my screen with just a tiny bit of it's launch pad showing.. So, I have two to choose from. Well, actually 3 with snipit.

    Kevin, since you are a "fixit" guy, how about taking that plate out and welding the hole closed and then drill and tap it with the same threads as the rod. I'll bet the rod is hardened and the plate isn't. It must have worn enough that it's not tight to the rod. Just thinking here. The jamb nut/washer under that plate are probably just there to keep the rod from ever pulling out by itself. I'm going by what I can see in your pics. I might be all wet but that's my thinking on it.

    I used to use that until I discovered Jing. It is so quick and easy and has features missing from the snip tool.
