Thought of you this weekend. As a former 20 year Cary resident I know that Lazy Days is normally the hottest weekend of the entire summer. This year you really lucked out weather wise. Sorry you did not hit your goal. Maybe next year. On the bright side you have a good inventory which allows for the rounds of golf. -
Read the description of turpatine and it sounds like mineral spirits. Should do the job BUT the Klean Strip website says not for sale in California. Pardon my French but you are %$&$#.

Ike what died/broke. I have an old Type 1 that the motor burned out on that I have been using for spare parts. Maybe I have what you need.

The beauty of this process is the ornaments are dry and ready to string or tie in 30 minutes. I sell 100's of ornaments each year and this is real time saver. Gonzo I have never had an evaporation issue. I mix and store in an old shellac can. Unlike poly or tung oil or lacquer shellac is thinned with denatured alcohol.

I dip mine in a 50/50 mixture of shellac and denatured alcohol.

There are two factors that have not come up yet. That is quality and location. I have been to craft shows and seen people trying to sell pieces that don't rate the burn pile. You know unsanded, bubble in the finish, broken fret work, cheap materials,etc. This effects the pricing. Your pictures seem to show quality craftsmanship. More importantly is your location. I live in a rural area in the middle of now where. I can't get the same prices as the folks in the suburbs of Washington DC or New York or Denver.

When I get mine I have the lumber store rip them in half length wise. I store by leaning them in my wood rack with short side up and down.

You can go to the Woodcraft website and it should tell you if your local store carries it and the price. Be warned they are not cheap. Locally I get a 5'x5' (25 square feet) piece of 1/8" Baltic Birch for $20. Woodcraft near me sells a 2.5 square foot piece for $6.50. If my math is correct that would be $65.00 for 25 square feet.

According to their website Menards does sell 4x8 sheets of Baltic Birch but only in 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4. 98% of the time I use Baltic Birch it is 1/8 which is only sold in 5x5 sheets.

Wood glues work best when they can soak into the wood. If the urethane gets on the surfaces being glue it can compromise the bond. I recommend you glue first.

An added bonus of insulated doors is it is quieter. Less outside noise in and less inside noise getting our to bother your neighbors.

My shop has an insulated door but it faces North so I can't say how much it helps with direct sun. I know it helps in the winter so I think it will help you.

Pegas Blade Chuck Thumb Screws / Set Screws?

If you go to a Wood craft or Klingspor or other wood working specialty store you can buy pure walnut oil, tung oil, linseed oil, etc. They are oils like mineral oil. They are labeled as pure. They do not contain drier or other substances. Stuff you buy from Minwax, Watco, Deft, etc are not pure.

Many turners I know make a "home brew" of 1 part mineral spirits (MS), 1 part polyurethane and 1 part pure tung oil ( not the stuff that Deft or Minwax sell).

BLO while it does contain other substances never hardens. If you did a tissue paper test a month later you would find there is still traces of oil leaching out. It does not create a solid protective finish. The tung oil product you mentioned contain tung oil, BLO and other ingredients. One is likely Poly. It contains a hardener and does create a hard protective finish.

Yes even small pieces will move. There is a lot less movement in a small piece then in bigger pieces. If that project was in the direct sunlight it would move one way when the sun was on it and back when the sun was not. Every day. 365 times a year. Think of it was a piece of then metal that you bend over and over again. At some point it breaks. I bet you would also find out the moisture content on the sun piece is less. "Baked" in the sun dried it more then pieces not in the sun and that cause the wood to shrink. The wetter the wood at the time of assembly the more the shrinkage. Just curious. How long was the piece in that spot?

Like Brian I have done a few intarsia projects and it is 99.9% power sanding. I use a drum sander and a Dremel tool. The only hand sanding is with 320 or 400 grit as a final sanding before the finish..
