  1. Excellent! Love the frame!
  2. I made two for my wife this year. The first is a Steve Good pattern. Done in 1/2” Cherry. The backer and base is Sapele. The beard is 1/8” Aspen. The nose is 1/4” Ceader. The second is from the Spring issue of ScrollSaw Woodworking and Crafts. The girl is 3/4” Poplar, the base is 1//2” Cherry. The birds are Purpleheart, Cherry, Redheart, Mahogany and Wenge. Every wood was from the scrap bin. Everything cut with FD Ultra Reverse #1 and #3.
  3. If the tear out is on the top, could it be you have the blade installed down side up?
  4. Most folks remove the hold down because it gets in the way while feeding the board into the blade. If you are comfortable using it, then by all means use it. Eventually, you will remove it.
  5. Most pictures of Steves projects, including the one you show are simulations, the colors are computer generated. You have to find and pick your owns colors. For me, I always use hard woods. For that backer, I would use Mahogany or Sapele. This piece is Maple for the overlay and Sapele for the backer board.

  25. Jerry, yes, there is a lot of oil in red Cedar. The oil makes the dust wet and makes it harder for the blower to blow it away. Keep a small paint brush handy to sweep the dust away while you’re sawing. Also, a lot of folks are sensitive to the oil. You should wear a dust mask when cutting red Cedar. Make sure you don’t touch your face while cutting it and wash your hands after cutting.
