Great cutting Marg! It's amazing what you can do with a flat blade!
  2. Beautiful box Peter!

    Nice cutting!
  4. Nice looking box! The dark wood looks like Mahogany.
  5. Welcome to the forum Brian! Your Owl is gorgeous. You should fit in nicely here. So come on in and join the fun!
  6. It depends on the look I'm after. If the backer board is going to be painted, I will use 1/8" Baltic Birch plywood. Quite often I will use 1/4" hardwoods to get the color I'm looking for.
  7. Beautiful work Jim!
  8. Kevin's sugestion above is an excellent idea. It should work until you can find replacement parts. Chanches are the reason the clamp striped is because you have been over tightening the thumb screw. Usually because your blades are slipping out of the clamps causing insufficient tension. This happens because of a layer of oil on the blades. I sand the ends of the blades when installing new blades. Also it helps to dress the ends of the thumb screws with some 220 grit sandpaper. rember not to tighten to tight. Never use a tool or jig.
  9. Love the bench Todd, but the other two are great too. Nice work!
  10. Bret, I am a scroll saw instructor at the local Woodcraft store. I teach my students to start at a medium speed. On the DeWalt saw, that is 4. If you feel your cutting is going to slow, speed it up until you are comfortable. If you are having trouble staying on the line, slow the speed down. It is a comfort thing. One thought though. When using reverse tooth blades, at very slow speeds, if you are not careful, the reverse teeth tend to lift the wood off the table. So you have to work harder to prevent that.

    Cool piece, very nicely done!
  18. Well Melanie, you have been busy! You have done some very nice work! I try to discourage my students from wanting to stay with just one aspect of scrolling. It's good to see you trying new things! Keep up the good work!
  19. I have always been a magazine reader. In a former life, I was a bass player in rock bands for over twenty years. I lived for Guitar Player Magazine. I read it from cover to cover. But what I really looked forward to was the adds. What new gizmos the pros were using, a new Guitar available or the biggest and loudest amp. After that life, there was woodworking. I subscribed to every general woodworking magazine available including: Wood, Popular Woodworking, American Woodworker, Fine Woodworking, and I think there were others that might be escaping me. Then there was Creatative Woodworking and Crafts and Scrollsaw Workshop, now Scrollsaw Woodworking & Crafts. In all those magazines I read the articles that interested me, but always checked out the adds to see what was new and available. I have reached a point that I only buy mags that might have something that I like or think I will do. I did buy the last Scrollsaw Wooworking and Crafts, but did not buy the one before that. I haven't seen the current issue, but will check it out the next time I'm in Lowes. The point I'm making is for me, if I like it, I'll buy it. If there is nothing that interests me, I won't buy it. Certainly not bashing or complaining, just the way it is to me. Oh, I forgot to mention, I used to subscribe to every magazine I have mentioned, bot no longer subscribe to any.
  20. Cool work John! I'll be doing a few of those too.
  21. No worries Brian, it's a family of Giraffes, all seperate. However, I have several of the Peterson's book and hav seen patterns in the books that have been featured in the mag.
  22. Very nice work Dave! I do service work and quite often am asked to take my boots off. Because I end up going back and forth to my truck, it's impossible to keep taking off and putting them back on again so I keep disposable booties in my tool tote. Saves a lot of work and time!
  23. Hey Del, that wood looks pretty crummy. Send it to me and I'll get rid of it for you
  24. Yeah, it's a tight fit and those adapter are a pain in the butt. A little patience and a lot of practice are required. You mite even have to remove the lower shrouds to gain better access to the lower blade holder. hang in there and let us know how it's going.
