I made this heart box in 2019 for my wife. I cut several pieces of 3/4" Poplar for the sides and the top. Several coats of hand rubbed Black lacquer for the finish and she painted the top.

1951 Bullet Nose Studebaker Champion I keep getting drawn back to the Studebaker car series. I have done a 57 Hawk and a 54 Champion (thanks to Charles Dearing design) The ’51 Champion and Commander models were one of the more innovative post WWII designs coming out of Studebaker. Raymond Lowey offered some interesting design elements to make it stand out from the Ford and Chevy models of the same year. The wrap around rear window and the “bullet nose” on the front grill gave the appearance of a recip. engine reminiscent of WWII fighter aircraft and added to the design. The Champion coupe model had a straight V-6 85 HP engine and the 4 door Commander had a V-8 120 HP engine. 1951 was one of Studebakers better selling year but their focus was changed with the Korean war that redirected production from commercial vehicles to military trucks and equipment. The Commander, with its larger 232 cu. Inch engine was later modified to become one of the earlier “Hot Rods”. The design is on the SSV library but I decided to do my own. I did my “paint in” technique on the tires and certain bridges. The grill was a challenge, more so because the size of the pixels didn’t allow for even holes and I had to draw them in and to nibble them in to even them up. Pattern is 1/8” BBPW on ¼” PW backer with shellac and Gloss Lacquer finish.

Great project. In days gone by it was not uncommon to see so many guys working on your car. Today, it's one guy with a PC and he's probably printing the bill before he's even touched the car!

Regarding closing up the deck ports, they drove me crazy since I top feed and missed the correct hole and scratched up the deck. I filled them epoxy and that worked good but eventually the deck so scratched up any way that I purchased the white magnet sheets and cut to size. They come on a roll and I can get several out of that roll. It also solved the vacuum port holes also.

Great looking transoms. Ours are out of glass and look nice but no airflow.

I bought Volker Arnolds Book 21 of patterns. I did some of the smaller ones but his pyramid tower was huge, 4' tall. Would have been a great project but no place to store it.

I thought it was time for another portrait. It is a self portrait of Vincent Van Gogh showing his good ear and not the one he cut off. The original portrait had all the swirls in the back ground but it seemed too busy and I didn't want to make all those cuts. I even tried a spiral blade in one spot but didn't like the look. I did better with my 0/3 Skip tooth blade. Plaque is 1/8" BBPW and 1/4" backer with shellac and semi-gloss lacquer. Frame is one of the wife's collection.

In 2015 I bought a EX 16 from my local Woodcraft store. I had it shipped to them for free and picked it up. I had an old Craftsman and it was like going from the stone age to the Jet (Excalibur) age. It has given me good service but I have done some few changes. I bought the Pegas clamps from Denny and they work great. The old ones just wear out. Steel thumb screws and aluminum housings. I mounted the lower thumb screw on the left so I can mount the blade with my right hand. I filled in the downdraft vent holes with apoxy because I top feed and was always going in the wrong holes and scratching the top. The top deck gets worn and found some white magnet sheet material (cheap) I cut to size and has been working very well. It's a black Excalibur General International unit. Not sure where it was made but it works well and keeps making saw dust.

Impressive work on the Schwibbogen. I have question on the lights. I had built a few a couple of years ago using 20 each 3w grain-of-wheat bulbs and used 2 "D" batteries to drive them. I soldered them to run parallel and hot glued in place. It would run through batteries. I can't get them to work anymore. Maybe some of the solders or leads are broken. I want to revisit the lighting and would be interested to know which bulbs you used. I thought about using 5v (like phone chargers) but would have to find the correct bulbs. Are yours AC lights?
