  1. I love this guy and his message on trade jobs. I had a college degree in business but worked as a service mechanic for Alabama Natural Gas company for 30 years. My job was pretty dirty at times, working in crawl spaces, but I probably made a better living than if I’d used my degree. I’m also proud I my job was helping people by repairing heating, cooling, water heaters, gas lines, etc. rather than supervising guys that do. Cut in about 3/8” bamboo. First time cutting it and I like it
  2. Thank you, Dick. While I still enjoy making portraits I have really slowed down due to life’s more pressing issues. Hopefully the pendulum will swing back eventually and life will slow down again. Since most of my portraits never leave my shop I frequently question if there is any point in doing more. But I think this quote has some wise advice in it. “Practice any art . . . no matter how well or badly, not to get money and fame, but to experience becoming, to find out what’s inside you, to make your soul grow.” — Kurt Vonnegut
  3. Excellent work on that design!
  4. Had a fun opportunity today. Chauncey Leopardi, who played Squints in the movie Sandlot was in my town signing autographs today. I found out my grandson was going so I gave him this portrait I had cut a few years ago so he could have it signed. He was beyond excited. I went with him and it made my day when Chauncey/Squints took out his phone and took a picture of it before signing it. Now it’s hanging on my grandson’s wall rather than my dusty shop.
  5. Thank you. As a matter of fact, after sanding this one I noticed a thin section of her ear had cracked and had to do just that. Thankfully nothing fell out
  6. I watched it just after she died. I don’t know how anybody could rest well in a tent in the jungle.
  7. Done in 1/2" red oak, around 9" x10".
  8. Beautiful! Wish my Baptist pastor dad was still around for me to make him one.
  9. Nice job. Pretty piece of wood.
  10. You’re right. I went ahead and wrapped it so I’d stop playing with it. I’m so glad we didn’t have cell phones and video games. I try to find gifts for my grandchildren that make them want to get outside, be creative, or use their imagination.
  11. I like the idea of the relief cutting too Paul. I may try that using Walnut and Oak one of these days. I can’t really claim this pattern as my own. Just one I modified a good bit to my liking.
  12. Yes. but it's not that difficult unless it's too big, odd shaped or top heavy. I balanced a few things on it and just had trouble with one. This tree and dice were no trouble and the tree is 8" tall. It says not to use metal but I don't think it's a problem if it's non ferrous. I put a brass mouse on it and it worked. This is the one I bought.
  13. The reindeer is old news, but for those that do shows this might be an attention grabber. I bought this for my grandsons 12th birthday on December 30th. Gonna be hard to let it go. I don't know why when you post videos they have to be downloaded. Just imagine the reindeer spinning in the photo if you don't want to download the video. IMG_7028.mov
  14. Beautiful job!
  15. Very nice, Paul!
  16. Thank you! Slowly getting back to normal.
  17. Thank you! Yes, it was a piece of 1/4" ply from an old dresser drawer bottom I believe. Didn't even have to stain it.
  18. Thank you! I'm doing well except for some lingering soreness that make things like breaking the seal on a jelly jar tough. Hopefully that will pass with time as I love PBJs.
  19. Thank you, Rick. The cedar was 3/4”. Cuts much faster than the 1/2” red oak and I’m used to cutting.
  20. Thank you! Yes, you may.
  21. Cut in some pretty Walnut.
  22. I’ve cut this pattern many times. A friend gifted me some wood including several pieces of cedar. I don’t really like cutting cedar as it’s so soft and I’m used to the resistance of oak so it’s much easier to make a mistake, for me anyway. He requested this cutting and this piece of cedar worked well with it. I used super glue and saw dust to fill the cracks in the knot.
  23. Nice job! Third of many cuttings to come. It’s a wonderfully addictive hobby.
  24. Great job, and maple was a great choice. They should be nice and tough. Lots of work but lots of people will be happy.
