Finally got some shop time and finished this Frank EV pattern. Cut from Baltic Birch-flat black spray with grey/blue paint under bird. Backer is 1/8 BB. Frame in 3/4 poplar stained with Behr natural stain.

Made this from a Steve Good pattern for my entry way. I had a old piece of barn wood that I used for the backing part.

Actually my head hurts from having an idea that was not placed there by the wife.

I was getting ready to paint a backing for a piece and was going to do the usual and lay it on some scraps. I saw I had a bunch of paint can caps and came up with this idea to put some screws in and turn them into free painters points.

Well done, I use flat black most of the time-I seem to have trouble getting gloss to not have brush marks.

Barb, I used 3/4 thick poplar. I used my table saw to rabbit the inside edges of the poplar, I placed the blade at the depth I wanted, in this case 1/2 inch, and set the fence for the amount I wanted to be in from the edge. Then I cut the waste by resetting the blade and passing the pieces through on their edge. I used my router to round over the outer edges, then did my miters. Hope that makes sense After glue up I place splines in the corners for strength and decoration. There are several easy to make spline jig plans online. I place the 1/8 inch backer inside the rabbit and use a Logan picture frame point stapler to place the hold downs on.

Wow, what great cuts! That is a lot of patience, and a lot of holes to cut and drill. I like the birch ply best-IMHO it really shows the detail.

No offense at all I am open to learning-all of this is new to me- this is what I was talking about in my response to your question, I had originally wanted a brighter color for the cutting and more border around the cut but it didn't turn out that way. The color/paint was experimental-Fortunately the piece is not glued to the backing and I will probably make another frame and larger backing in the future. Any thoughts on a better color for the backer would be welcome.

Finished this today, I used 1/4 MDF for the cutting with a 1/8 BB backer. The frame is poplar and stained with Behr natural color stain and two coats of Deft lacquer.

Really nice Frank, I like your choice of color for the frame, the frame color doesn't draw my attention to the frame and allows the flowers to stand out IMHO.
