The many faces of SANTA updated 10/12 to add Santa 4
preprius replied to FrankEV's topic in Bragging Rights
Nice set of faces. Cool idea of keeping red and green color. Your scrollsaw village pic shows you have a beard. Which one of these 7 is a self portrait? -
it looks pretty big. what are the dimensions?

Hi all, I ran across an interesting competition for Art pieces. I am not really an artist. I'm more of an electronic engineer that likes hands on. And during locked down I can get more hands on. My first job out of college was Rockwell Space Shuttle division in Downey California. My sister was born in 1969, my Mom and Dad decided to name my sister Rhea Dawn. Dad says Rhea was a greek goddess for Earth,, and Dawn was rising. So my sisters name is Earth Rise because of the picture from the moon showing earth rising. So I kinda am interested in space stuff. So the art contest is about Earth. It is promoted by an Astronaut Nicole Stott. She is the first to try water color painting in space. I was watching a interesting National Geographic Series called "One Strange Rock" narrated by Will Smith. This is many episodes. It talks with Astronauts and then dives into some really cool details back on earth. Episode 1 shows how parts of oceans change colors within 90 minutes. Astronauts go around earth every 90 minutes. They noticed that colors changed. Nicole Stott was in series. There is more astronauts also. This shows discusses something called overview effect. Here is a short video from her. . . Here is a link to the competition. https://earthobservations.org/artcompetition.php You should browse around about the earth observation main page to see and feel what they do. This gives a better feel for the Art contest. One section is of course about sustainable wood source. about 2/3 way down on this page is an online form. I clicked this and it has an area for 500 words max about your art piece. Scrollsaw projects as art. This contest is a cool way to show off this site. Sea Turtles, Jelly Fish, Nature scenes, Water Wheels, these are some of the stuff I've seen done by members. FrankEV your stuff has lots of nature scenes plus they have some really cool colors. Intarsia guys also have some cool pieces. Natural coloring from mother nature. The hotshot coin guy, Nicole Stott wears a pendant, jewelry is art. This is a global contest. Last note: I know this topic can be pretty controversial about global warming. It is not my intent to bring up opinions and debates with this post.

i like it. you eliminated the hinges. Me. Mark Eason.

Another way to look at the whisker area, is that the puma is eating grass. The top left grass tuft shows a little white on bottom. So Puma has got down to the bottom of grass tuft. Or the white whisker area could be water splashing. Ok I know I am stretching the story the pic tells. I just make up stories to cover up mishaps. In no way do I want to detract this great piece. It shows an action shot of nature which I always enjoy.

Very nice. This is a good example of any shape can be a box. It also looks like a chocolatr cupcake. I must be hungry.

update... I upgraded the perch from nothing to live edge. I pasted a pic of a patch that i saw on line. So the live edge kinda emulates the peaks of pinnacles. Olive wood is the peak.
-
Mad polar bear. Action shot.
-
Yes it was a good movie with lots of good characters. Hmmm I might have some scraps from live edge that might be more appropriate for Groot. Just thinking of the movie character.

I have cut all those except bubinga. I guess I will need to go get a chain saw for bubinga.

welcome to the village. I joined here in Dec 2020. I have learned so much asking questions to the experts. My first little projects try to do stuff a laser can not do. This goal brings up questions and pushed the boundaries of the saw. But these guys here help me learn little tricks and tips. Feel free to ask any questions. Even little ones. Or big ones. Oh and we love pictures. Again welcome. Me. Mark Eason

A guy at woodcrafters say paduak will change color. Some of his customers use a slight orange tint too keep the orange. Only on the first coat of protection. Oh boy that king looks nnnnniiiicccee. So nice that the queen will date him. or the other queen will eat him up. Depending on players ability.

What a beautiful blend of painting and scrollsawing. It is almost to the point that you can not tell it is scrollsawn. The backboard has different shades of tan that really break up the scrollsawn look. The brushed hair breaks up the sharp black painted section. Wow. the more I look at this the better it looks. Did you consider an Oval frame? A verticle oval might look a bit better. Me. Mark Eason

so when you go to buy the new led fixtures / bulbs take a video to see if they have strobe effect. Before you buy them.

I live near a Condor reserve area. Pinnacles National Park. This is one of the sites where they steal the eggs that the condors lay, so the condors will lay another egg. They hatch and raise the bird in captivity but release them when the are old enough. Humans captured all known California condors in 1966. There was like less than 50 of them. Now there is over 1000 of them. Every one of them is gps tagged. So i decided to make a easy scroll saw outline and inlay the white wood aspen for the under wing. The local vet does work on wildlife and does work on vultures. So I will donate this to him. Behind the wood piece On the wall is the picture I stuck to the wood to be used as pattern. Because the inlay fit flush only from the back, it looks like I turned the head the other way. Size is about 8 inches wing span. Wood is 0.75" thk Poplar for the bird. Aspen 0.5" is white pattern on wing. General finish water based stain brown on poplar then satin coat. Only satin on aspen. Actual wingspan of Condors is about 10.5ft. Lesson learned... 1) poplar needs prestain conditioner. I did this after the inlay was cut. This caused wood swelling and inlay was very tight. Fix: precondition the wood before cutting. Both woods the aspen and poplar. 2) using poplar caused more work due to staining, pre conditioning. the wood slightly bowed after conditioning which caused sanding on flat surface to sand off the stain on edges. Fix.. don't use poplar. Use dark brown wood that stains well.

Circular Scroll Saw Designs by Charles Hand - Elaborate Plaque
preprius replied to RabidAlien's topic in Bragging Rights
Incredible effort. Is there a planned use? A holloween eyeball for pumpkin would be a temporary application. Orange light or radioactive green behind it. I agree, the wood depth makes it intriguing. -
Im not sure this about a hegner question anymore. More of a lunch or a liquid lunch, with a single speed of 1750 sips per lunch time in Santa Barbara. I think the questions are... When? What restaurant? Nearest hotel? Is there driftwood on the beach? How much for hiring a sailboat? Is there a scrollsaw village discount?

I have flat led panel light in my garage. Here is a link for flat 2x2 ft. with 4000k. I have 2ft x 4ft different brands. I bought mine from home depot. https://www.amazon.com/Panel-Light-4000K-Ceiling-Dimmable/dp/B08GYMQX3D/ref=asc_df_B08GYMQX3D/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=487296721115&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4863919218002314782&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9032140&hvtargid=pla-1103180866736&psc=1 Ok extra bonus about a LED lights. I am in 3 percent of the population group that can see 120hz light pulsing. this is twice the ac wall frequency. Some led lights have ac line frequency that pulses the leds. These kind light can be annoying to me, and if the use 60hz it can give me a sea sick feeling. There is rules that led lights (or any light) should not be pulsed with frequency lower than 300Hz. But cheap led lights manufactures don't bother. It is less electronics inside thus making cheesier lighting. I am an electronic engineer that designed led light electronics circuits. When my company started cheesing out and made pulsing drivers I quit. Then they went out of business.

If this need for a light box is for tracing.... make a wooded frame using 1x2. cut plywood for bottom and paint white. A better bottom would a aluminum 1/16 inch thick but not needed. apply led strips to bottom. Attach 1/4" plexiglas OR glass to top. Led strip choice. all white leds are not same color of white. colors are described as a number with a K. 4000k is a very good white. Also called neutral white. 5000k looks bluish. 3500k looks a bit yellow. The size of glass top might need some middle support. if needed get clear plexiglass 1/4" square pieces from plywood to bottom of glass. polish the support pieces top using 2000 grit. here is an amazon link for cheap led strips. you can also mount leds strips on inside of frame for less glaring indirect light. https://www.amazon.com/Kebinfen-Natural-Non-Waterproof-Flexible-Multifunctional/dp/B06Y67D1JH/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=white+led+light+strips+4000k&qid=1631465394&sr=8-7 if you used clear plexiglass for top and it is too clear then you can lightly sand top with 600 grit to give frosted light dispersing top.

It is very nice. the aspen was a good clean white and gives a great illusion of top of the cubes. How big is the box? How thick is the aspen and other wood?

Wow at first glance I thought the names were on a metal plate. The shiney yellow color just made it like metal. Oh and the perfect lettering made it look machine made. I had to zoom in to see the perfect cutting. You did a great job.

For my application (California) I would need to add smoke , flames, and burnt trees and then say "Fall" or fallen. Or add "No" Fall zone. We dont have seasons here. Good looking project. Hey if you do another one with Red you can say "spring". Red for tomatoes.
