  1. Thanks Bill, I think that's the way it goes in all types of woodwork, there's no right way to do certain tasks the best way is what works for you.
  2. And there it is exactly my problem, something I have to do myself. That is totally awesome!!, seeing something like that makes me realize how far behind the curve I am lol I bought a good selection of blades to begin with and I'm also preferring the ultra reverse FD blades, so far I'm liking the smaller blade even on pretty straight cuts I like a #3 over a #5 but with only less than a week and not a lot of time on the saw that could change. Thanks for the input !
  3. Good info, thanks I'm think I'm going to cut a scrap and try some different blades and see what works for me, seems like the logical thing to do
  4. I'll have to confess I'm cutting thicker wood right now because I'm to lazy or busy to resaw and plane some stock down to size. I do have some cheap thin ply in the garage but cheap is the word it's full of voids. It's a busy time for me right now I I just don't have time and being as this is all new to me I just want to sit down and make some cuts in the few odd moments I have. I understand that we all work at our own speed and I thankfully I'm not going to have to make a living out of this as I'd starve. Come the weekend I'll order some thinner BB and some more blades and hopefully have some more time to cut.. Thanks for your input!
  5. I thought I had ordered some MGT blades but I didn't so I better do so. The stuff I have is white oak, flat sawn, I've made a couple of furniture projects out of them as they are 8in wide. Thanks for the reply, looks great !
  6. A while ago I acquired a bunch of reclaimed oak bench seats from a school gym, by the time they come out of the planer they are a shade under 3/4 thick. I can resaw them if needs be but there are a couple of projects I have in mind that call for 3/4. What's the best blade choice for cutting this as I've only cut softwood so far and I'm going to guess this stuff will be pretty hard, most of it has got some figure to the grain too. I'm thinking a skiptooth blade but what do I know
  7. Great work, I've tried one of these and they are not easy, Especially that size.
  8. From a distance, squinting with one eye closed
  9. Well after a busy weekend I finally got free time to try another cut, I feel like I went backwards on this one .... Rushing maybe? Maybe a good sanding will help... Thinking of giving it a coat of paint if it tidies up ok. I guess that this will wrap up this thread and I'll put in some hours practicing and making fire wood lol.
  10. Lots of great replies and info thanks! Just so you know, I belong to many forums and facebooks pages and this place has a great friendly and helpful vibe unlike any others I belong to! So a big thank you all for being so helpful, polite and friendly ( even funny at times )
  11. Can anyone please recommend a sanding mop and a link to it if possible? I know you can make these but I've got such a big to do list that it would be nice to just have one without adding to it.
  12. I'm probably not allowed to swear here..so I won't, but that is gorgeous!!! Great work !!!
  13. Yes that's the sort of thing I mean ! Well done
  14. I'm going to assume that there are members that do other types of woodwork such as furniture building. Do any of you combine your skills and build scrollsaw designs into aprons, table tops and panels. I'm definitely going to try this when I've developed my skills enough to do passable work.
  15. Bruce thanks for your insight and I know you're right! Building furniture I'll see small flaws because I know they are there others hardly ever notice them. But we are our own worse critics, right?
  16. Thanks for the kind words. Just glanced at your profile and noticed your originally from West Brom, I was born in Handsworth Wood just down the road and now living in the States ..... It's a small world.
  17. Thanks Ray, I did this after reading an earlier post in this thread, they pretty much went back where they were. The saw was cutting well beforehand just the hockey sticks. When I replaced the blade I didn't wind down on it like I was doing before and all seems good and the blade stayed put. All in all I'm going to chalk it down to inexperience and my zealous application of force on the knobs, snuging it down then giving it a little extra seemed to work fine and no hockey sticks
  18. Just to clarify, what's happening is the blades a bending where the screw contacts them, as I said earlier I'm probably over tightening. I've purchased some new knobs because the ones that were on it are cracked and ready to break.
  19. Got to admit I love those Flintstone ones !
  20. Very nice you "got him" perfectly
  21. To be honest I think I'm over tightening I haven't had time to mess around down in the dungeon since I did this( been cutting up a old fiberglass tub for disposal.) After the football (or soccer to you guys) tomorrow morning I'm going to dress the new bolts that came today and go easier on tightening and give it another go
  22. I do this myself too, I'm a little slower than I used to be but I'm appreciated by the folks around me.
  23. Thanks for the info, I've got 4 new ones ariving today, nice to know they will need flaterning. I still might give my FIL my upper and lower bladeholders and get him to machine me a new set and drill and tap them to the correct metric size so I could use the Excalibur ones. Which still begs the question what size are the Excalibur ones?
  24. Was watching a Steve Goode video about changing out the inserts in the Excalibur blade hold down T-bolts Anyone tell me the size of those Excalibur T-bolts, are they 1/4 20?
