  1. Ray, no sides to be taken lol My last comment may have been misunderstood, for clarity I was trying to say that regardless of the speed of the blade slow or fast the biggest factor of how fast the blade cuts is the pressure on the work peice. That said even if the saw is running fast I'm feeding slowly, I'm not trying to keep up with it I'm just giving the blade as much as I feel comfortable handling, maybe because I'm new to this having the blade running fast forces me to concerntrate on My feed rate.... I don't know I'm a rank armature at this but so far it seems to be working for me. Please forgive me for breaking all the scroll saw rules
  2. I'm thinking out loud here so please don't take any thing said personally it's just the way my brain works I may be over thinking this but wouldn't a blade running at 750spm remove the same proportionate amount of chips as a blade running at 1500spm being as it's making 2 strokes to the others one? I'm inclined to think whatever speed the blades running the amount of of pressure applied to the wood your cutting would dictate the speed of cut. If the wood does not touch the blade no cutting occurs and the blade stays cool. The more pressure applied to the blade the faster the cut and the more heat is generated untill it reaches it maximum rate of cut when as stated it cannot clear chips fast enough. Just my logic and it may be wrong but it makes sense to me as with all things it's down to personal preference and whatever works for you.
  3. Well I dropped him a line as it's not that far away from me, I'm always careful about buying online, I'd want to drive over and see it and pay cash, no Venmo or such ..... Was also looking at a 40 694 still in the box (Opened) for a couple of hundred near me.
  4. I can totally relate to this, being a beginner I've struggled with it but didn't want to be "nibbling froever I sat down for a while with a couple of 12x12 scrap plywood pieces cutting lots of little squares untill it clicked. KKMCrafts thanks you have just improved my scrolling . Here I am trying to find the sweet spot for my Hawk and I just turn it up to full speed and concerntrate on My feed rate! and a lot of my problems corrected themselves. More topics like this one for us newbies ....lol
  5. Going to buy this saw, just want to check it's one of the good ones. It looks in mint condition with the stand $300. It's a black one but does have made in Taiwan on the plate. I'll take a blade and a scrap of wood to test it, I'd appreciate your input as my knowledge of these is sketchy at best
  6. When I got the saw I took the tension assembly off to clean a load of crud out of there, so it should slide right out. But I do appreciate your direction and help ...
  7. Thanks for your insight kmmcrafts I don't have the adjustment screw so after what you've said I think I'll just upgrade it. I like the saw it's quiet and cuts well and even after the upgrade I'm under $200 in it also I guess if I ever need a need blade holder they will be easier to get.
  8. Sorry for the confusion and my lack of clarity. my VS 226 ultra has the newer " square" type blade holders, the top one is getting worn but still serviceable. On the parts website there is a upgrade kit for the Vs220/226 which replaces the cam, tension arm etc and converts it to use the BM type bladeholders (all included in the kit). The original upper blade holders are unavailable now (waiting to restock) but I've been told it's been this way for awhile. My FIL assures me he can he can make me some as long as I have one for a pattern So has anyone upgraded and using the BM upper blade holder? And if so is it worth the $54 ?
  9. Couple of questions regarding the ultra upper blade holder 1. Anyone upgraded the upper blade holder to the new style? 2. is it worth the $54 for the kit or stick with the original. At the moment the originals are not available but my FIL is a retired tool maker with his own full shop and ensures me he can make them for me. I guess what I'm asking is there any advantage to upgrading as opposed to replacing ?
  10. I've not used a spiral very much at all but opening the existing cut up using the spiral blade was where I was going. Also I found buy gently rubbing along the line you can tidy up if you didn't quite get on the line. I think I'll have a busy weekend and beginning of the week but I hope to try out the pegas blades soon.
  11. Frank, first off both cuttings are great excellent work. I've seen to be drawn to these cartoon characters I really like the look. Being a newbie at this I had to really zoom in to see how you achieved this look. Thanks for posting these I'm going to have to order some good ply and give one a go, knowing it won't look anywhere as good as yours
  12. I'll close this thread out now with the the last finished piece as the gnome is not going to get painted untill I get myself a airbrush ( could be another slippery slope).
  13. Love it. Great work!
  14. The flag got a coat of paint today (I found some craft acrylic paints in a box of my daughters stuff) oh and I cut the backer board too. I'm no artist so....
  15. I absolutely love both of these, great work!
  16. Dick, It was a scrap piece of bad quality sanded ply 1/2 and a #3 FDUR to cut the whole thing. After I had finished cutting it I wondered if I should have used a spiral on the narrow cuts? . I have a variety of pegas MG blades arriving tomorrow to try but I've been happy with the FDUR blades so far.
  17. Thanks Dick. TBH I thought the fish one was beyond me but as you said break it down and do it step by step. I'm glad I tried to cut it as I learned a lot. I was having problems cutting 90° inside corners, but when I changed my hand positions it all seemed to click and it started to flow. Feed speed let the blade do the cutting. I appreciate all of your comments a lot are very helpful as well as encouraging, I came to the right place to learn !
  18. Well for good or bad one bought the 3/4 lockline, PVC pipe and fittings so I'm going with Rolf's system. Now I just have to find the time to install Ii
  19. Another good idea, I have a glass sharpening plate which I don't use anymore ( used to sharpen chisels on it, scary sharp method ) as I now use diamond stones.
  20. Thanks Ray that's a great idea, I've got these three projects cut now I'll work out how to clean them up efficiently, I suppose that's a good reason to finish them instead of just putting them on the shelf. TBH I'm not a big finishing fan.
  21. Well grass is cut and the yard was tidied up so I had a free after noon and decided to try something out of my comfort zone. Didn't go completely to plan as I ended up having a thin piece break off on me ! . Going to sand and clean these off as my wife seems to think I should keep them, go figure may try paint on some of them. Maybe I'll try some good wood next week instead of scrap! I'm improving slowly!
  22. Thanks Scrappile !
  23. I hope not, I already have a pretty long shopping list ... Which may or may not include another saw, I'm thinking one is not enough?...right? .....
  24. Well I needed a new hobby Lmao
  25. Thanks Bob, I'm just in a hurry to learn, I've had the saw a month and that's only the third time I've got to saw. I see all the beautiful stuff you guys are churning out and I want to be there .... I know be patient
