  1. I've been bottom feeding since day 1, which wasn't to long ago, and find it easier than top feeding. And since I learned about the black marker trick on this feed, things have gotten way faster and easier. It's almost effortless now finding the hole! I like that my Delta's arm will lock in the up position for me.
  2. Wow, those are nice. I need to make something cool like that for my Mom.
  3. That looks just perfect! Love it.
  4. Clever idea with the dowel. I think I'll try that. Oh, and you wouldn't have embarrassed me, I did that myself pretty good. Let some unsavory words fly in the process. I'm here to learn so I'll take any critiques.
  5. My list of wants keep growing. But I am doing good so far with what I have. At least my husband is happy I'm either wanting tools or guns, lol.
  6. So an embarrassing update, I glued the head on upside down. I kept looking at it thinking it doesn't look the same, almost like a bull dog instead of a pug. It didn't dawn on me until I started to fit the ears, which I have not done yet. But wait, there's more, when cutting the pattern I cut the tail separate from the butt body and now I am having trouble connecting it, and lastly (I think), I glued the head to the butt portion (ha ha not just upside down). There is a difference between the front and back and I did it backwards. Good Lord!! All I can think is that perhaps I should not have been listening to a thriller audio book while assembling. Obviously I can't do both at the same time. So frustrated....
  7. Yep, that's beautiful!
  8. Some darn good remedies in here. Never thought to do any of them - though I did just start trying fretwork. Man I'm glad I joined this village! Everyone is so helpful and friendly!
  9. Anchorage, Eagle River and now Trapper Creek. Been here since 85' and never leaving. Visited Fairbanks a hand full of times in both summer and winter. I believe the -52 for sure, and luckily haven't experienced it. I think -40 is as low as I've been in. Still too cold.
  10. Built a couple of bat houses last fall. Hoping to get some tenants this year. Anyone here have any luck with them?
  11. That looks great!! Still working myself up to trying it. Thanks for the inspiration!
  12. Me too. We just got a fresh 3" yesterday.
  13. I've been seriously thinking about getting chickens. I live out in the boonies so it is doable, just haven't made the jump yet. Looking forward to seeing the finished project!
  14. Working on a new kind of project. Building a Pug planter for my sweet neighbor. Still have some coloring to do and putting it all together. The colored pieces below are not attached yet. I might still change the coloring on the face a bit and still looking for the perfect color to stain the body pieces. I'm having fun. Making a Bulldog next for one of my oldest friends.
  15. I never thought to use it. I have a huge tube of it that I use for beaded jewelry making. Never once thought to use it on my wood projects. Thanks for this!
  16. Thank you MarieC. I'm pretty slow too. I like to use different blades throughout a project to test them out as well. I really enjoy this art! Looking forward to seeing your stuff as you grow. Cheers from Alaska!
  17. I do have a long haired German Shepherd, but this is a Russ Beard pattern. He looks like my boy though.
  18. Just finished cutting my 9th project on my new Delta saw. I'm really happy with it. Just need to sand and put a finish on it. I used Pegas MG #3 and #5 blades on 1/4" Alaska birch.
  19. Your grain choices worked perfectly from what I can see. Very nice.
  20. I love them!!
  21. Just realized I posted this on the wrong topic of mine. Oops Here it is finally all cut out. I used multiple blades trying them out. For the itty bitty cuts, I tended to use MG#3s but with 3/4" piece of wood it was challenging. I tried the spiral blades but couldn't get the straight lines and sharp points of it so I nixed them on this project. I did bend a few blades and broke one. All in all it was a fun project to experiment on. Now to sand and clean up all those little slots. Some look real messy to me and want to see about limiting that. barb.j.enders: I think I will leave the live edge parts, clean them up a bit.
  22. Thank you for all this. Took me a minute to understand what FDUR meant, haha. I have some of those and really like them so far. Just rec'd some MG's in the mail (I'm getting the acronyms down) and I like them too. I tried the MG#5 on my project and it cut so good, it was getting away from me. Went back to the FDUR#5 to finish the larger sections, probably because I was already used to how to control it. I don't have a finish plan for the project. Wanted to practice on some fretwork cuts and had this piece of wood lying around. Going to clean up the edges a bit and maybe just leave as is. Put it on my shop wall as a reference for one of my first pieces. Now that I have a variety of blades from different companies, I will start my trial and error to see what will fit for me. The advice on this forum is so helpful. I really appreciate it.
  23. Thanks. Trial and error it is then, with a smile. Love your quote by the way!
  24. Good to know, thanks. For some reason I was thinking fretwork needed to be on thin material.
  25. I'm wanting to start a larger fretwork project, or large for me. Photo attached. I have a lot of Alaska birch on my property and it is the wood I do all my wood working with. Is this wood hard enough for fretwork when planed down to 1/8 inch? Or what thickness should it be? I'm guessing 1/2" would be too thick. I was wondering if anyone has used this wood before. Also, which blades and sizes do you suggest for all the teeny tiny bits. The smallest I have is the Pegas MG #2/0 and the Pegas Spiral #2/0 (just came in the mail and so excited to try them). I do have larger sizes in both. Any tips and advice is much appreciated! Pattern found on this site for those interested.
