GrampaJim Posted February 28, 2020 Report Posted February 28, 2020 Driving old farm tractors that don't have mufflers all day, every day as a kid. Total silence is just a fond memory... amazingkevin, danny and Foxfold 2 1 Quote
Foxfold Posted February 28, 2020 Report Posted February 28, 2020 My husband Tony has tinnitus. His ears were damaged by insufficient safeguards while he was a serving soldier and then a virus about 20yrs ago did even more damage. It's awful... Over the years I've often said something like ''what do you want for your Birthday/Christmas and he's said ''An 'Off' switch'. It's so sad. How anyone copes with constant noise is beyond my comprehension. When he sleeps is the only time when it doesn't bother him. The damage done to the cilia in the inner ear is permanent, there is no 'cure', although there are things that may help 'ease' the noise. The 'suicide' rate for sufferers is abysmally high. Scrappile Posted February 28, 2020 Report Posted February 28, 2020 I've had it since I was in my young thirties. Went to the doctor back them and he said there was nothing that could be done for it. It has gotten progressively worse as I get older... I have ringing and at night sometimes I have a buzzing that sound exactly like a fly buzzing up and down a window to get out. I have even got up in the night and looked for one, but nope only my ears... I live with it and it is background noise. One of the little challenges of life. Everyone is telling me it is from the service, shooting rifles before they gave ear plugs, we use to put cigarette filters in our ears.... maybe so, maybe not,, I don't know. danny and amazingkevin 2 Quote
RangerJay Posted February 29, 2020 Report Posted February 29, 2020 I can't remember ever not having tinnitus - although I'm guessing it first surfaced following a youthful need for insanely loud music. At 69 years old my coping mechanism is background masking sounds - I always have either the TV or the radio on - not saying I'm actually listening to whatever show might be being broadcast - but the background noise is important and I quickly miss it if it isn't there. I can't say that the ringing in my ears bothers me during the day - (most often about the frequency of spring peepers) - but at night - when the background noise is gone - the peepers can get pretty loud. Additionally - and despite also being hearing impaired - I have become protective of what hearing I have left - (I know - too little - too late) - and always - (now) - wear protection when working with noisy equipment in the workshop. From time to time, outside the workshop, we might end up in an environment that is exceptionally noisy (i.e. attending a loud concert) and I am quickly reminded after the event is over how loud noises will aggravate the condition. Finally - and this is my own theory - I've come to believe that bad lifestyle habits also aggravate the condition and good habits help mitigate it - examples?:- junk food is not good - eating the salad and veggies is good - being a couch potato is not good - getting out and spending time in the outdoors is good - the time I notice the change is at night - the peepers never actually go away - but its a nice treat when they settle down a bit. amazingkevin Posted February 29, 2020 Report Posted February 29, 2020 as long as I can remember the high pitch sound of a tube T.V. fly back transformer is what I hear day and night. Rarely does it disappear but when it does I know right away what dead silence sounds like!! danny 1 Quote
fredfret Posted February 29, 2020 Report Posted February 29, 2020 Mine is from shooting, jet aircraft, ships guns. Other than that I hear perfectly other than the constant ringing. amazingkevin and danny 2 Quote
spirithorse Posted February 29, 2020 Report Posted February 29, 2020 Hi, Danny, I also suffer from tinnitus and it is miserable. I believe @RangerJay makes a good point and the form of 'masking' that I have used for a long time is ear-phones on an mp3 player. You don't have to have loud music but, it is amazing how much help it is to hear something other than the ringing.@Foxfold I had never heard that statistic about the high suicide rate but, I can certainly understand it. As Scrappile said, mine has gotten progressively worse as I get older so, I suggest you do your best to protect the hearing you have and do anything you can to mask the ringing just for everyday comfort and to maintain your sanity! God Bless! Spirithorse GrampaJim and danny 2 Quote
dgman Posted February 29, 2020 Report Posted February 29, 2020 Mine comes from two problems, chronic ear infections as a child and playing Bass in rock bands for over twenty years. I don’t even notice the ringing anymore until I’m in bed. I have a small fan that I run that masks the ringing. I’m about 80% deaf in my left ear. Every once in a while I get in my left ear a clicking sound. Almost sounds like a cricket. danny and GrampaJim 2 Quote

I don't have Tinnitus but am nearly completely hard of understanding. The damage to my hearing is hereditary I believe. I have a hard time during conversations but I hear noises very well and they are bothersome. I wear hearing protection most of the time. amazingkevin 1 Quote
don in brooklin on Posted February 29, 2020 Report Posted February 29, 2020 As long as I can remember I have had ringing in my ears. My mother had it, my sisters and one of my kids. Hereditary say the doc. A number of years ago I went to an audiologist as it was really bothering me at night and I would wake up and only could get back to sleep by putting on the TV and I would fall back to sleep. After running a bunch of tests and even trying a hearing aid that added white noise nothing seemed to work. So on the last visit, his recommendation was - "Get up, go downstairs and put on the TV". Did that for years and now I just watch the posts on this forum and other media. (it is 3am as I write this.) GrampaJim and danny 2 Quote
JimErn Posted February 29, 2020 Report Posted February 29, 2020 I have it too, and like others I always have a radio or tv on. Shooting from the time I was eleven, 60's rock and roll, drag racing with straight tuned pipes, hot rods and Harley's, the Army, and as an added "bonus" while in the Army my right ear drum was punctured. The scar tissue where the hole sealed up, did away with high frequency for the most part in that ear. Along with the constant ringing/buzzing I have a wife who talks to herself in a low voice - a habit she developed during her one million OTR miles. Let me tell you it makes you laugh when you see her, all 5' 4" and maybe 100lbs, climbing up into a Peterbuilt. danny 1 Quote
danny Posted February 29, 2020 Author Report Posted February 29, 2020 I want to say Thanks to each and Everyone that offered their stories. Here is mine as I feel it. Lil Bro asked me a couple months back. Do I hear ringing in my ears? Said he has had this for a month. I remember thinking. Yes Always there has been a Sound that I had Always thought of as Just Normal. Never a Ringing sound, but to my imagination more like being out in the open country and listening to the sound the lil creatures like Crickets etc. make. Still no Ringing, but I did consult a Ear Specialist and Google some. Yes found out it is a Ear Disease with No know cure. My other Lil Brother has had this condition as he told me for 20 years. Said he also went to the ear Doctor etc. and took various meds and Nothing worked, so he just learned to live with it and advised the same for me. Sleep has not been a problem. Anyway I will just learn to live with it. You Friends and what I call Family I know from your actual experience with this have helped me a lot. Thanks again..........Danny :+} dgman 1 Quote
Jim McDonald Posted March 1, 2020 Report Posted March 1, 2020 I guess I am lucky to have avoided the ringing, but I have a notch in my hearing that shows up more and more frequently. Youthful shooting, sirens in my early adulthood are my causes. Quote
Charlie E Posted March 2, 2020 Report Posted March 2, 2020 (edited) Danny, I've always described mine like you did. Crickets or grasshoppers in a field on a summer day. I think I was pretty near a nervous break down when I first started noticing mine due to lack of sleep and anxiety it caused. I had to take Klonopin to sleep for a long time. Like most things time created a callus of sorts and though it's as loud as ever, it doesn't really bother me now. One great help is knowing you're not alone, as this thread proves. By the way your avitar pic always makes me think of Richard Dreyfuss in Jaws. Edited March 2, 2020 by Charlie E Quote
Fedido Posted March 3, 2020 Report Posted March 3, 2020 Mine is from Jet Engines. Regardless of how much hearing protection, it is impossible to not be exposed in the line of work I had. Always have had some music or something in the background to mask it. When it is quiet, I have a little white noise. Sometimes though, it is so bad, I can't hear out of that ear other than a loud ringing. I then instinctively start rubbing my ear like a dog trying to get "that spot". Almost fell over a couple of times because my leg started shaking (Just kidding about the last part of the leg). Quote
WoodCutter Posted March 4, 2020 Report Posted March 4, 2020 I am 74 and have that noise from age 24. I got it from loud log trucks and shootin. Just have to live with it. Some days dont even notice it then others it just screams at me. Quote
