Ron Johnson Posted January 14, 2024 Report Posted January 14, 2024 One good thing about being retired is you can sleep in on mornings like we’ve been having here for the past week. Temperature has been at times between-45-50 C with the wind and expected to warm up a little this week. Good thing is I’m still able to spend some time in the shop. barb.j.enders Posted January 15, 2024 Report Posted January 15, 2024 @Ron Johnson the vortex is, technically, now hitting us here in Winnipeg. Today, with windchill, -45. It was f#@$ cold over the weekend though. My daughter was supposed to fly out yesterday to Hawaii - no go. Hopefully in the next day or two. West Jet cancelled about 500 flights. Thankfully my shop is in the basement. Quote
kmmcrafts Posted January 15, 2024 Report Posted January 15, 2024 -5F here this morning and my shop heat has been on all night, normally turn it off but need to make some orders today if I can. Shop is currently at 23F.. I might end up just staying inside as I have tons of editing to do in my online stores etc.. I just hate doing the website work but I've put it off a long times.. and a lot needs to be done on every site I sell on.. Sure would be nice to be able to just make the stuff and let someone else sell it for me. Quote

But I often think about the markup on goods manufactured overseas - just what it costs to make the item and the many layers of markup that happen between that and the actual price the item sells for. Along with that thought is the amount of money spent on advertising and how much of that is factored into the sale price in order to make a profit. My wife and I watch the TV show Jeopardy, and as I understand it, the money they give out to winners comes from the companies that pay for the advertisements that are shown on the show. That's a LOT of money. By the way - 26 degrees here in Delaware. I'm spending time reading up on finishes and such. The garage is not heated and I'm old. 'nuff said. kmmcrafts 1 Quote

Yeah, I think a lot about that stuff.. I follow a few YouTubers and one guy goes to junk yards buying old non running cars and tries to get them running. He quit his $120,000 year job to do youtube full time.. he gets many parts from sponsors, youtube pays money for X amount of followers / hours of views and adds that are played on the videos.. so his sole income is based off of ads.. and he is making more than before quitting his job. They just built a huge shop.. it's been amazing to watch his progress in the last couple years. Now he just opened up a merch store for shirts etc.. Quote
JessL Posted January 15, 2024 Report Posted January 15, 2024 Wow guys! I'm in a 21 degree heat wave up here in Alaska. We did just go thru a -25 degree spell but have warmed up considerably. Stay warm folks! ChelCass and kmmcrafts 1 1 Quote

I like a person that sees the positive! I do not go bike riding in that cold, but we right now have no mosquitoes, wasps, or flies! I will take it for a while. Quote
Jim McDonald Posted January 15, 2024 Report Posted January 15, 2024 Was about negative 7°F here in Indiana this morning. Thank goodness there was only a moderate breeze. Quote

Liz Weir Posted January 17, 2024 Report Posted January 17, 2024 (edited) It's been 30F colder in Texas than it is in Anchorage, Alaska! Our highs for the last few days have been in the teens, lows barely above zero with windchills down to -10F. We are supposed to go above freezing today, we haven't been above freezing since Saturday. That doesn't sound too bad except that the buildings, plumbing, and people are not made to withstand these conditions here. I grew up in Michigan and there is a huge difference between surviving these conditions there and here. Edited January 17, 2024 by Liz Weir Quote
ChelCass Posted January 17, 2024 Report Posted January 17, 2024 Very true Liz. We Michiganders are tuned to this kind of weather and we have all the equipment to keep the roads passable. Quote
