Scrollnado and dust

I have had the Scrollnado installed for a few months and although I was happy with the nozzle up top the bottom left a lot to be desired.  After a few hours of sawing the bottom of the saw together with my pant leg and a tray I had under the saw would be covered in saw dust.  A lot of saw dust.  2 weeks ago I switched the intakes from the plastic tubes supplied with the scrollnado, to loc line 1/4" by 6" hoses.  I saw an immediate difference.  The top was cleared much better and the bottom also improved but I was still getting a lot of saw dust.  Then as they say, I had an Eureka moment.  Why not attach a funnel to the bottom loc line.  The loc lines were stiff enough that they did not move.  So I found a small funnel, part of a set I got from Harbor Freight.  Think the set was less than $3.00.  I had to cut off a piece of the funnel so that the loc line ending would fit inside.  I taped it with painters tape and after adjusting the position I started sawing.  What a difference.  I have included photos of the modification and also a before and after photo of the dust accumulated after 2 hours of scrolling.  As a neighbor I used to have used to say "I am very well satisfied.

Nice to find something that works...especially when it's cheap!  I used to use a Fein shop vac with small hoses to top and bottom of table, and that worked well.  But, even though the Fein is quieter than most vacs, it was still too loud.  I've gone to the super low tech solution of the box fan with a 20X20 furnace filter.  It sits on a LOW table at my right side, at the edge of the saw table, and not only catches all the dust from the top and bottom of the table, but anything floating around my face.  I don't need to wear a mask, and there's nothing on the floor in front of the saw.   Just need to make sure you have the fan facing the right way, so it's pulling the dust from left to right, the same way the saw's blower line is facing.

I tried cutting Bubinga as my trial run 'cause there's nothing like red sawdust to see if the filter is actually catching it.  Great results, and a really pretty filter!  It's easy to clean too, just take it outside and sweep it off with a whisk broom.  I'm a happy camper now, and I can hear the CD player.

Great idea. I ditched the end tubes that came with the scrollnado and I'm using 1/4" poly tubing which took some time to tame. I get very little dust on the floor, but I've had to make many modifications along the way to hold the vacuum tubes in place. Occasionally I get small pieces of wood small enough to clog the tubes. I looks like you're using a Loc-line. What size did the trick?

I use a Foredom brand "Super Quiet Dust Collector".  It works great and is very quiet.  I got off Marketplace a year or so ago along with a Seyco scroll saw etc.

I used 1/4 inch tubes I got from amazon.  $6.49  "Waziaqoc 2PCS Flexible Water Oil Coolant Pipe Hose, with Round Nozzle Hose and Flat Nozzle Hose, 1/4" Thread Plastic Adjustable Cooling Tube. I did not use either of the nozzles that came with it.

I work outdoors in my patio. The scroll saw is in a garden shed. The kind that the top lifts up.  I put the vacuum outside the shed and I am able to hear music fine.  The vacuum is a small Harbor Freight model.  In fact it is the smallest they have.

I also work on the patio and most days I have a slight breeze which keeps most of the dust away from me.

But, I still use a blower to periodically clean the table and undercarriage. 

And then a leaf blower sends all the drop outs into the grass!

Hi Jim, I wish I could do the same but my patio is surrounded by a six foot fence in my community.  HOA would have a fit if they saw me working.

If I could chime in on this topic and shift gears a little bit, I would like to ask about adapters for other equipment.

I have a 12 gallon Rigid Wet/Dry Vac with a 2 1/2 inch end on my hose. This end fits perfectly on my Pegas scroll saw. The problem is the variety of port sizes for my other equipment (band saw, sanders, jointer, etc) that range from 1 3/4 inches to 4 inches. Can anyone recommend an adapter set that has a wide variety of sizes? Currently, I spend about 15 - 20 minutes cleaning up and I would like that time to be applied to other things.

I ended up buying a new hose, that came with adapters, for my shop vac.  It is a longer, bright orange, more flexible hose than what came with the shop vac.  The longer hose means I can leave the vac in an out of the way spot and just grab the hose.  I have had it plugged into a remote controlled outlet.

I wound up buying the longer orange hose as well, I didn't care for the bulky hose that came with the vac. Do you have adapters for your that you can easily plug and unplug the hose from the ports?

Rockler has adapters. They come in a box with various sizes.

It came with a half dozen adaptors.  They clip onto the hose and then slide onto/into the portal. It was ordered on-line so I don't remember who it was from.

I looked at the Scrollnado and just did not work for me.  Several folks here have made very good dust collection systems using PVC and LocLine  pieces. They have worked well.  The hose from my vacuum just plugs into the PVC.
