  1. I just recently discovered the cap that goes over the fuse and of course you push and the fuse with the cap pops out was missing. Well I called the local repair and they told me the part number was changed and gave that to me. I went to order on line and the shipping was about 1 buck less than the part. The repair place said they would order it and now 5-6 weeks later the part came in. Well It now is one piece also the outer part will not fit in the square hole that is in the side of the saw. It is too small so will pull right out. The tech did not know they had done that. I took the saw with me because I was not able to get the fuse out anyway but that was not a problem at the repair place. He put it in anyway but it was not going to stay very well so I had him put in the old one and I have electrical tape over the opening. It is running. and no charge so I will see if it lasts. Just thought you may want to know in case it happens to you. I have no idea where the cap went most likely in the vacuum sometime. I think I will call dewalt and give the old number and see if they say it was changed if not see if they got an old one hanging around.
  2. Fantastic job Dick. I think you did well Santa is still sitting in the chair and did not fall out on his bum so you know you are considered a good boy but you have to wait until Christmas to see how good.
  3. thanks Dave that is a good tip. Now if you had tips for making mitered corners I could try it. yes I use a miter saw but have gone to only using for cutting straight
  4. I have both also like Randy and like both each has its little idiotsyncrosies but both are good. having said that I think by Dewalt is up for a new motor last check $248 plus shipping. so that is on hold. the Ex 21 is doing OK at this point. It would be fine as long as you don't lose any money. If my dad went with you I think you could do a even swap for either saw. He is good at haggling. You may see what they say for a direct swap Dewalt for Ex.
  5. I use BLO and will dip, brush or wipe in a pan. I then let it set a few minutes and wipe off excess. Fret work I like to blow out with air hose. I will let it dry 48 to 72 hours after this. I do usually attach the backer first and let that dry at least over night before before applying BLO to it. I do use old clothes for wipe off excess and have one under the work. I Usually will make a few things then BLO all at once and used Poly for top coat.
  6. It is certainly worth the test drive. but that is a good price if the condition is as stated.
  7. Edward is correct. I buy mne at a Education supply store had not seen in at Michael's anyway the last time I bought it I looked all over and could not see it. I was looking for the old packaging but asked and was told the company change the look and so far I think it is easier to use and flow out and the hold is the same.
  8. thanks Charley that is helpful. the motor is not by any means hot it is warm but non threatening. The brushes i thought but when I remove the cap the do not come out and i did not want to mess them up by trying to get them out. I will be at dewalt next week to pick up the fuse cap and plan to take it with me to have them show me how to get the fuse out that remains in without the cap and I do not know anyway to get that out. Then I can ask about the brushes also. I have a type one and never had trouble geting all those things out to check and keep an eye on them
  9. I have a dewalt now that may have an over heating motor. Not sure yet but the motor is $248 dollars and I got the saw on sale at Rockler for 300 so in needed will have to think on that. The ex-21 has been good but I have not been completely pleased having to replace a part which was sent to me from Seyco to replace no charge and having to replace the tension lever x 3 and the blade holders now it is making and noise when seems strained. I hope they both continue but if not will have to consider not scrowling with the cost of good saws. If replaced may serious look at Jet but then the price is same as Ex but Know the service on it is good freindly and quick Jet still needs to be around to see the bugs and service. I do prefer top feeding but not too old to learn new tricks.
  10. I did think of the motor because it was warm bu I do not usually go about touching the motor when scrolling so not sure if it is warmer.
  11. I did blow them both out and still would stop then go again. I am hoping the cap will help with no dust. I was thinking the switch when blew it out it was on and started up briefly but then stopped.
  12. I have a dewalt and recently I was cleaning the shop and dusting things off etc and noted the fuse cap was missing so have ordered one and will pick up soon. the saw was running just fine. The cap is all that is missing the fuse remains intact so most likely why it is running. Now when scrolling this week end it will suddenly stop running. If I wait a few minutes will start and cut well again but then stops after a few minutes. I have cleaned the switch. the motor feels warm not hot. Could the brushes be worn. I tried to look but after taking the screws out they did not pop out like the did on my old dewalt did. I will pick up the fuse cap this week and will take saw with me because I am not sure why the fuse did not come out with the cap cover. I will ask questions and see what they say about the cap popping off and the fuse staying put. the not running I suspect is the switch. To get the fuse cap It is 11.49 I think to get it from the company the shipping is over $10 additionally. The store here charges the same for the part and no shipping ordering it in as part of the store inventory.
  13. I have been in a 2 car garage for years now with scroll saw, planners, table saw, etc. Yes it does get dusty. I have a jet dust collector I hook direct to the saws. the planner is on its own no hood and this really puts out the dust but I have the 16 foot door open and fan blowing out but need dusting and vacuum after. I don't plan much. Also have a jet room dust collection in the ceiling however it quit working a bout a month ago and haven't figured it out why yet. Congrats on your move to bigger digs. I want to move but scary to pull up stakes in Indianapolis and go to Charlotte NC but will make decision in the spring.
  14. Nothing to add to the above. I will however add to slow down and enjoy the ride. I tell my self that all the while I cut. I will take a deep breath prepare to have blade in 90 to the table, my shoulders are relaxed and speed to point I can handle at a slow easy feed letting the blade doing the cutting. I am not new to scrolling but it has been in the last couple years that I think I have finally got it. or at least more often than I used to.
  15. I think I would use epoxy have had good results with other things. When I use the saw tooth hanger I usually add a little glue to the hanger side down and nail. I have used a small eye of the hook and eye variety into the top of the edge of the wood.
  16. Many years ago I bought a set up for the dewalt locally made by a scroller and sold at the local wood shop supply store. It has a piece bolted into the back lower leg with a 2 inch connector for a shop vac. On the other side of the board there are 2, 1 1/2 inch ports for that size hose one that goes up top and one that connects below. I put a adaptor from 2 inch to 4 inch and use a jet dust collector works well. However with small fret work sometimes you may lose a piece as it get sucked up before you can stop it. That is assuming you like me may cut something off that should remain. I know this is not a good explanation but no pic to post and can't post anyway. It was mad by a man locally and sold I think under Old Grand dad wood shop. I do not think they are available now since I think he has passed away. He first made them when Dewalt first came out.
  17. thanks for the review I have been waiting for someone who actually owned and scrolled to tell the story. I am not in the market for a new saw but like to be up to speed
  18. I have a rubber ink stamp in design of a hand saw with Handcrafted by on the top of the blade and I sign grampa sawdust on the blade part. I don't date but may think about that in future. I have cards out from Vistaprint with Grampa Sawdust's Woodshop with phone, and email
  19. I have had one for several years 220 and use similar as jay in drill press. I have done fret work but as Jay said need support and be careful. This year I replaced some of the strips since I had enought left over to do it all over again. I use in on all my work and have no complaints except when it takes the piece for a flight accross the room and breaks that causes me to speak a different language. A secondary gain is it really buffs my nails.
  20. not a big craft fair person but have picked up since retiring but never asked about insurance
  21. dan has the ticket. I have done this with the Dewalt and the Ex 21. guess I just move it to much and it gets tired out and won't hold
  22. I use Flying Dutchmen and have been happy with the results and if it ain't broke don't fix it. I have tried other lesser quality but did not like them much. Actually I have not used any other kind of blade in 15 years.
  23. I agree looks fine as is and know one else knows but us and I'm not going to tell. With this type of wood I presonally think either nothing or a non yellowing clear poly or something like that. I like to use the different size bark on wood like that to do animal cuttings as you did I think it gives them a rustic look they need.
  24. keven I do not know where you got them but I made an error (once) and got the wrong blades from WTB My fault not theirs and I called and asked if I sent back with the recept and not used could I exchange for what I thought I had. I was treated well and not called names or anything and they were happy to do that. I sent them back with a self addressed stamped envelope and they were sent to me quickly after they received the blades to exchange and my new order of what I wanted. May call where you got them and see if they are willing to exchange. 2 gross is a lot of blades specially if your not going to use them
  25. I too had that problem and tried various things which were more of a stop gap. The white lever will wear with time. I did order a new lever assembly and replaced that worked well after getting it and in stalling the lever but then started again after a few months. I decided to go ahead and get the whole upper blade holder and lever which has fixed the problem so far. I feel your frustration and it was probably good that I live in Indiana without close by Oceans. Look on Seyco and find the parts or call them and discuss the problem and I think you will be helped. But that is frustrating to be scrolling and bam the lever lets loose.
