  1. Those of you with an EX 21, how often do you find you need to replace the white tension lever on the front. I had the original start letting go when scrolling and found I was putting it back 2-4 times during the cut. I got a new one and replaced not to long ago and now am having the same issue not as much right now but will let go on me. I have adjusted as it instructs on the replacement. I ordered a new one last night and will be here next week. I am not ready to change yet but if it gets like the original I will have it on hand. It seems like I replaced it less than a year ago. Anyone else replacing the switch. I know there is normal wear and tear but this time did not seem to be very long. Could something have to do with the upper blade holder? Any thoughts would be appreciated Thank you.
  2. If you decided it would work to lower the price for a friend may tell the friend it is what ever price you decide on but I would normally sell for 50 that way if someone asks where he got it he can quote a correct price rather than what he got it for. Certainly a barter for his work seems fare as well.
  3. I use a home made clamp as well and like this better than trying to hang on. Also good for very tiny cut outs
  4. I too have used sloans and had good service. It has been several years so not sure on the pricing. As Edward said give them a call. I have met the owners and very nice to work with.
  5. I think it depends on you and the type of saw. I use a light with magnifier which helps these old eyes. do you stand or sit. a nice stool chair is nice. I have a home made blade holder on a round plate made for my bench drill press but have attached to my scroll saw stand and it rotates out when I need a blade and rotates out of the way when not in use. I it is just thinking what you think would make things easier for you.
  6. i have gotten vet discount from both stores. Maybe because they are just across the street from each other. Can easily get from one to the other in less than 5 minutes. HD gave me 10% vet discount when I purchased 4 exterior doors one a sliding patio door. that did amount to nice savings. Lowes did not have as good of selection but at least I easily could compare before buying. I like Menard's but is farther away..
  7. Indiana has the standard woods by me. the do cut to size so you don't have to get the 8 footer or 12 footer. I have been able to pick up some cut offs reasonable more so when not marked.
  8. Glad your doing well. keep up the good work and you'll be running in no time. Glad you kept us updated I expect to have my left knee done this winter so It won't take away from fall and spring chores. If the snow flies it don't matter now I am retired and I have never seen snow here in July. My wife won't care since she will not drive in the snow. Thanks for those updates.
  9. Looks great he should be as snug as a hog in a bog, Hope he pays the rent
  10. Well I started with a dremel using pin end blades 2 speed. It go me started but then went to Dewalt which I used 14 years before it just plan quit. then wanted a ex-21 but at the time had things to finish for Christmas and not enough money for that and Rockler had a sale for 300 dollars. Later I did get the money together and have a Ex-21 and a Dewalt. I use them both switching out each week. I tend to prefer the Ex- 21 a little more, I am happy with both. As far as a RBI Hawk I have never used one. I have an acquaintance I have known over 20 years and he has had one the entire time I have known him and has been extremely happy with it and produces some very beautiful work. He does not make for shows or sales. he makes and gives away. I guess it all comes down to is getting the best you can used or new with what you can afford. Good luck and welcome to the addiction
  11. I understand I have never been very good at spelling but with spell check things got easier. I would think a bowel bowl would be called a chamber pot.
  12. I have a stamp with ink pad and use a stamp my wife got me that is a handsaw with handcrafted by on the top and open saw blade where I sign my name. I did get a stamp for work from Vista 10+ years ago with all my professional alphabet on it and I retired now but was still in use daily until July this year. I don't think they do a lot of free now but I have gotten business cards from them and fast service with good pricing.
  13. well done wish I could use a computer better. Being able to do personalized ornaments should be great for family and friends and for sale by order.
  14. thanks for the comments and the repair has started however slow. A young man came out and took out the wall last week and now waiting on the carpenter to put wall back and repair the two studs that were broke. then the Mason will start his brick work which will take a while to save the brick they can and clean up to use again and blend in with any new brick. I did call a couple of trucking companies locally and one was missing a wheel on that day and came out to verify it was their wheel. They took it and now the insurance companies will work it out. The restoration company is recommended by both and is an international company. I Hope we are all back together by snow time.
  15. thanks for the comments. I hate to admit it but I do not have a program for pictures in my computer. I have taken some. I will see if my wife will help me out so I can down load and post pictures. they are in my Tablet just have to put them some where. I really got to figure it out so I can share.
  16. I would agree with either blade choice. I don't use spiral for anything I have them just not figured how to use them. Taping is a must both sides and I have always had good success with Duct tape glue the pattern to the duct tape. Very slow. I found this procedure on Sloan's web site years ago when I purchased some plexi to make ornaments and other patterns. Works well. Main thing slow
  17. I have not used them in a scroll saw but would scare me a bit. for pen blanks I used to use the larger blade # 9 or 12 but found and hand miter saw box (cheap) at I think Menard's or Harbor freight and this works great to cut the blanks to size and straight which is harder with scroll saw. I do have a band saw which I can use to resize wood for blanks or resaw.
  18. I have used one for a few years and they do last well. I am most likely start making my own cutting the strips and figure out best way to bore the center hole.
  19. well I retired a little over a month ago and have finally caught up with honey do and more I do list. during that time I had a dental issues, unexpected guests and then a entire wheel came off a cement truck doing 60-70 mph and the wheel managed to hit a little driveway light 2 houses down miss a tree, a suv, broke and head light on the neighbors mustang and displace about half the end of my house. It pushed the walls inside out of place breaking the base boards and tearing carpet. At least the house is brick which probably stopped it from going through the house and thankfully 10 feet to the east and I would have had it as a bed partner. I feel blessed and fortunate. well this week I was in the shop and managed to make 6 work plagues, 35 compound bird house ornaments, 3 crosses, 2 other ornaments and a welcome sign with 1 Attended children will be given an expresso and a kitten. All cut and finished. Boy that felt good and I am pumped now. Going to the Zoo tomorrow.
  20. Well my wife and I both had the invite to down load. My wife first then a week later me. She did not have trouble downloading and seems to have worked for her. She had some things she was not used too but has figured out what she likes and don't like and she is good at ignoring what she don't want. I got mine in OK but then had difficulty with the get started. the video came up but did not play. She had a whole tutorial but did ignored it.. I did see the things that were already in that I did not need and did have some concern of who was getting what information. I managed to get through things mainly by guess and by golly. Prior to get window's 10 I did down load inkscape and there was a lot I thought of strange things downloading and MacAfee questioned one part as a virus. I just deleted it. then windows 10 came in and lots of things strange happened, after about a week or less my computer would not start just had dark screen and if it cont. alt dele it said hit escape to restart then none of the options worked the first 2 tries nothing happened. finally the only option I had was reset back to factory settings. That left me with nothing. Went to windows store and nice young man said not going to get info back and we down loaded all the windows updates. took several hours actually all night. But I have win 7 back and am re-inputing my information and am happy at least at this time. I am assured it was not windows 10 and my computer was working perfectly normally. I do not know that the inkscape had anything to do with it either but I will see how others do before I tell them to try again. I still have until July.
  21. I remember a long time ago in a galaxy far far away but I transgress. I was in Lowe's one day and they had gallons of linseed oil and mineral spirts at a price like that some dented other dusty It was inventory time and I think they just wanted them gone so not having to count. they turned out to be fine and I used them for a long time. got couple gallons each. But having said that always be cautious on a deal
  22. I have used them but did resoret to using them by hand rather than machine. So years ago I stopped I use and sanding mop and am happy with that and normal sanding. mop not for real delicate cut piece.
  23. i have found with my EX 21 sometimes I get the blade just into the position but barely. I have done it with top but more with getting in the top first then don't reach bottom correctly and pulls out. and this may not happen with every blade just some I measure thinking they are short some how but not. If I have a blade doing this I just make sure I have enough blade in the top and then will loosen the tension a little and see how it fits below and then tension. I hope I made some sense. I just make sure there is just a little more than just the very tip in the holder.
  24. I will have to keep that in mind. most of the kids and grandkids are in NC and before they moved to Charlotte we went by Hickory and may need to reroute to go that way again. Now if I can convince gramma it is a better route and we can stop and rest for a long time on the way.
  25. thanks that was my main issue I was thinking Wildwood and not WTB. I also thought you could get through Mikes web sight but was not sure since I did not see the UR blades listed just SR but then they may be the same. Thanks will order tonight. May go to WTB because I need other things too. Thanks for all the answers and setting me straight.
