I started my scroll saw hobby because of a booth I ran across in a small town celebration and I could not believe that anyone could even consider that they could make something out of wood that looked so fantastic and impossible to me. It was a couple of years after I had seen that booth that I ran across a lady in Wisconsin that was also selling them in a little shop. I asked her what that art was called and she told me it was intarsia. After I got back home from that vacation I looked it up on the computer and decided to give it a try. I did not own a scroll saw machine but I did have a band saw so I made myself a simple 7 piece pattern of a dolphin intarsia I had seen on the computer and cut it on my band saw. I knew that diving into something new to me like intarsia meant I needed to start with something very simple. Well after a bit of sanding to get the different colored wood to match without gaps, I was surprised to find out I could actually do intarsia and I fell in love with it and soon I had purchased my first scroll saw and purchased a pattern. I made somewhere around 25 different objects and I loved it even though I was not an artist at it, I was still happy and I was instantly receiving great comments from family and friends. My point is....If you can scroll, and I know you can do that well, you can also do intarsia. Start with a simple pattern and give it a try. Dick heppnerguy

I have a granddaughter that lives in Montana and takes her time. every day to call her grandmother and also she loves my intarsia animals and requests new ones every year for Christmas. Her hallway it covered with my projects and she never seems to tire of them. I am one step ahead of her, as this bear will be her next addition. I am not sure of the wood used but it is extremely dense and making the fur lines on this peace was really difficult to do because of the density of the wood. It was also extremely heavy and took a few blades to get it cut, even with the simplicity of the pattern. I have more to post in the following days to come. Dick heppnerguy

fun project that tells a story without any words. I love the amount of cuts as it shows some challenges without too much extra. Sometimes, for me, too excessive number of cuts, although it makes a project impressive to the viewer, also can take away from the subject by creating too many distractions. Nice project Dick heppnerguy

I like your background color as it is not too dark and it brings our your cutting very nicely. Love it Dick heppnerguy

pocket crosses were very popular in the little town I used to live in called Heppner. I man made what he called pocket crosses with the idea of giving them to anyone who had lost a friend or family to let them know they were not alone in their problems and others supported them, even some they knew not so very well. The cross was a reminder of the careful person that gave it to them and told them to carry it in their pocket as a reminder that Christ died for them because he cared and loved them too. He also asked them to pass it along to someone that might need a little encouragement and caring also. I loved the idea and started making pocket angels to give to others, myself. I think they are very nice and people who receive them seem to love that someone else cared enough about what they were going through at the time to give it to them. Dick heppnerguy

I love that. Using a background with so much family meaning is a wonderful idea. I have several family civil war letters and I cherish them a lot, so I can feel the power of using this background in the way you did. That probably means you would not sell it to anyone other than a family member that understands and appreciates exactly what it is all about Dick heppnerguy

Thank you for your nice comment, Dave. It just has been awhile since I posted and I have made several items in my shop and mailed or given the projects to the one they were intended for and forgot to take photos of them. Dick heppnerguy

I cut that one a while back also. Pretty difficult to pass up cutting H Botas patterns as they are so well done and the subjects he chooses to make patterns of are way too adorable to pass up. Love your project. Have you ever been on Tombstone? We live about 100 miles from it and I have been there many times when our guests visit us from the North West and have not been there before. A fun place and a great movie too. Looking forward to more of you projects as they are so nicely done Dick heppnerguy

What a great team you and your wife are together. Both of you do such beautiful work. They are fabulously done. You mentioned that it was a little hot at home....We have only had one month below 110 degrees this month and it was on the first with only 109. This week it is 116 to 115 degree but at least it has been cooling down to the 90's at night. Dick heppnerguy
