  1. What a great assortment of games for the older kids. They contain not only some nice work on your part but some nice challenges to come about for hopefully a long time. Dick heppnerguy
  2. I wouldn't hesitate to send it as it is. It looks great and it will make a great remembrance for the receiver of it because every time they look at it they will have the reminder, not only of the deceased but also something he loved and you be remembered as the maker of this. It is a perfect idea and will be cherished and most likely handed down in the family for many years to come. Dick heppnerguy
  3. I always have to admire your projects as your work is so outstanding. Thank for posting your comments as well as your projects as it makes it more fun to view with them. Dick heppnerguy
  4. What a large verity of woods you used in this one. No wonder it looks so outstanding. Way to go girl. Dick heppnerguy
  5. A nice project with a lot of good advice in it. I like your wood choice for it and also how the finish came out. Dick heppnerguy
  6. You are so right. I served in the U.S.Army Airborne but when I was in for my 3 year hitch the world was pretty much at peace, (which id rather unusual in itself). I was in what was called a strack unit which meant if some emergency anywhere in the world, we were the first to go for the United States. Dick heppnerguy
  7. For sure. I totally agree. We live about 6 miles from the Gila River Indian reservation where Ira Hays lived. He was one of the Marines that hoisted the flag on Iwo Jima (sp). He was given the metal of Honor for his time there by the president. One remark he told the President was," I am not a hero, The ones that gave their lives there are the heroes. Unfortunately Ira was found dead by the side of the road on the reservation years later. He died from alcohol. So sad, I would have loved to have been able to meet him. Dick heppnerguy
  8. She did bring me a piece of the wood that was of lessor quality so that if the airport check in decided she could not bring it and took it away from her, that it would not be a big loss. I cut it into 4 pieces on my band saw to see if it would sand out and become workable for a pattern and it did sand nice and smooth so if I am able to get some better marked ones I am sure it could be used for intarsia. Dick heppnerguy
  9. I found it to be a story without any needed words. It caught my attention immediately so I knew I was going to have to cut it. Dick heppnerguy
  10. My wife and I read our bible together every morning and every now and then as we are reading, I come across something I do not remember seeing even if I know we have read it a few times. I guess it has to have something to do with whatever the Lord knows I need to be reminded of. I I love your spirituality and the generosity you have for others by making all these nice thing to help someone in need to find a little happiness in your gifts to them. Dick heppnerguy
  11. Some people are that way about certain things. Perhaps it just is difficult for him to express himself when something is given to him. I still think he will cherish it and the fact that you cared enough to do that for him. Dick heppnerguy
  12. That may be the case as when Liz gave me the red centered wood and it was really bright red, she was told that very thing about beetles. It will be interesting to see this pink wood. Dick heppnerguy
  13. I hope to have at least a piece or two before next weekend and I will find out if it is workable or not. Dick heppnerguy
  14. Me too, Jerry. I am a believer that God has control of every part of nature.
  15. I had the same feelings about spiral blades as do a lot of scrollers but I also knew that the people that did use them were able to do the most delicate cuts easier without the occasional breakage so I decided if I wanted to do that kind of cuts, I would need to learn how to use them. I practiced on a couple of patterns and to my amazement I was able to get the feel of them very quickly. I found one of the secrets was to run the saw at a rather fast rate and unlike the flat blade I needed to keep my sight on the edge of the blade instead of the center of the blade. I learned that it was very important to keep moving with a steady pace and like the flat blade there were no turning of the pattern as you went. I did also discover on very small items it was best to have the blade running directly toward me like with the flat blades so I could easily see exactly where the outside of the blade was cutting. I believe if you try them on a pattern that really does not have a lot of cuts and take your time and just sort of aim your blade at it destination and keep a slow steady and smooth pace you will be surprised how fast you can learn to use the spiral. Remember when you first started to drive a car and how as you were about to enter a corner for the first time, how scary that coming up turn seem to be and after a couple of turns you found you could just sort of relax and the curves did not require all that amount of practice as you thought it might? Same with the spiral..so keep the speed up some, just keep moving smoothly along, watch the outside of the blade as that is closest to the line you are cutting and you will find they are quicker to use and not that difficult at all. Dick heppnerguy
  16. Your work is so dang nicely done. I sure hope I can better my painting as I try to follow your suggestions to obtain my goal there. I love everything you have posted. Dick heppnerguy
  17. Sometimes the guys think everything should be bold to be masculine, they will get over that once they get married and start having a family. Personally I think they are perfect as they are and they should be very grateful they have someone that is will to give them things they made and some day they will cherish it just because you made it just for them. Beautifully done. Dick heppnerguy
  18. That is how I saw it and just had a feeling it would be perfect for my grandson who is so into the history of WWl. Thank you so much for the nice comment Dick heppnerguy
  19. Denny your baskets are really done nicely. I love doing baskets as they are nice finished items, not real difficult to cut and assemble and do not eat up a lot of wood at the same time. Keep having fun and posting all your work as I enjoy seeing them as do so many others of us Dick heppnerguy
  20. Very nicely done project. Nice clean cuts and a great finish for it too. Your good friend will certainly love this one. Dick heppnerguy
  21. I really like that. I would have never given that a thought. It is a really nice and rather fun decoration. Way to go. Dick heppnerguy
  22. A truly dedicated man to help others. Great job and a very good cause. You are truly a great example for all of us to consider from time to time. Way better than making things to sell, in my opinion. Not that selling ones work is wrong, but rather, remembering other's needs, that we all can help resolve with our work in our shops. At the same time it helps us as scrollers to feel a little better about ourselves. Dick heppnerguy
  23. Thank you very much. I am about 80 percent happy about the results but wish I had an idea about how to do the parts I did not cut. I use spiral blades when the pattern has a lot of rather delicate cuts and I need to be more assured that I will not get any pieces broken out in the process. Dick heppnerguy
  24. The Charlie Brown sign is located just West of Arlington, which if you remember Arlington is about 15 miles West of the Arlington exit on 84. As you are heading West on 84 and passed the Arlington exit the road starts a fairly long assent upward. When you are approximately half way up the hill, look to your left, (away from the river side) and you will see what almost looks like the a man made sculpture of Charlie Brown laying on his back and looking at the sky. It is amazing and probably missed by most people driving the route. I am going to go to Heppner in November for one week. Not sure if I will have the time to get away as there is a lot planned for this trip. Dick heppnerguy
  25. I know this not the right place to put this but I thought it was probably the place most looked at by members so I took the liberty to post it here. This will be most interesting to those that do intarsia work but even if one does not, I believe all would be interesting in viewing it My daughter in Heppner, Oregon, where we lived for over 15 years before moving to Arizona, has a wood burning stove that she heats her home with and she was cutting her wood so they will be ready when the summer warmth disappears. As she was splitting some Camerack wood some of the pieces had this unbelievably beautiful pink center. Knowing that I do some intarsia, she sent me a photo of a piece of it. I asked her how wide it the pink center of the wood. She told me she thought some of it was between 3 and 5 inches. She is coming for a visit next week and told my she would put a piece or two into her backpack to give to me. The cause of the pink centers is not really known for sure by us but I was told several years ago when I had a piece of it that was a brilliant blue, rather than the pink center this one is, that it was caused by a certain beetle that homes in the trees. Other guesses was it was caused by the soil in which it is growing. As far as I know, all is just a guess. Anyway, I hope you all enjoy seeing this, and yes, I hope to be able to get more of it and seeing if it is workable. My daughter said she will try to save as much as she can for me. My other daughter who also lives in Heppner is also a wood worker so I don't know how much she will be grabbing for herself, leaving whatever she decides I should be able to have for myself. The Pink does not go through most of the center of the wood pieces so they are extremely rare to find. Dick heppnerguy
