Last week I finished Decorative Basket #5. This week it is #4. Not working backwards, just making the ones I like. The pattern set is by Jerry Crim and purchased from Scroller Online. I used 3/8" Hard Maple and FD UR #1 blades. The basket is approximately 8" round and 2 3/4" high. The finish is spray Shellac. A lot of turning the blank with this project. Comments welcome.

I received mine yesterday and looked through it while listening to the Twins game. For me, this is the best issue yet. I project I will make first is the Wonder Bowl by Dave Van Ess. He introduced a new concept where there is no drilling and very little sanding. The intarsia Pheasant by Kathy Wise introduces using wood burning to enhance the project.

Last Monday, I ordered a basket pattern set from Scroller. I never ordered from them before, because they don't seem to give the designers credit. The patterns came in the mail yesterday and I had to make one. I made this small basket without the lid. It measures approximately 5" x 5 1/2" x 3" high. I used 1/2" Hard Maple, FD UR #1 blades, and finished with spray Shellac. I ordered some 3/8" stock to make some of the large baskets. Comments welcome.

Ray, that looks very good, especially for a first try. As for blades, I use FD Polar #7 or #9. Making those turns with a thick blade is difficult, but with practice can be done. I would not go to a thinner blade on 2" stock. The 'Hot Wood' is from friction with the blade on wood. I use packing tape to hold the project together and lubricate the blade. Not sure about the jumping, but a reverse blade might cause the jumping, also if you are using a clamping system, clamping too tight van be a problem.

There are twelve in the set, patterns by Keith Fenton and found in CWWC June 2013. I had a lot of tear out as seen in the first picture, so next time I will use a backing. I used 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood and FD UR #1 blades. I may make a mobile out of these. Comments welcome.
