    This has been an off and on project for a while. Can't get anything but poplar in square stock locally, so I gave a few of these a baptism in various stains I had on hand. The birds are not meant to be copies of actual species, but rather inspirations. Some are just because I like the color. I just paint them as a way to pass time and keep my eyes and hands busy. Patterns from the talented Diana Thompson, who I hope might occasionally look at scrollsaw sites even though she has closed up shop.

    You have "pulled back the curtain" and vividly shown us where we came from. Everytime I think this hobby might become static, something new comes along: compound cutting, bevel cut bowls, your process for adding color, etc. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future.

    Like everyone prior, my greatest sympathies on the loss. I don't know that I would have been able to make the cuts you did and I admire the abilities of you and the designer.

    For a few years, I have made these state quarter magnets/ornaments and have sold a fair number and given away far more as thank yous. I needed something different for a big Indiana University basketball fan and came up with the idea of a framed outline on a fabric backer. True to form, I now own several different types of fabric and have patterns swirling for logos and other projects based on fabric backed upcycled frames. Frame size is 5 x 7.

    Depends on the size of the wood and the cutting. When I make my state quarter magnets, I use 3/8" hardwood and since the quarter is 15/16", I always make the area where I place the magnet at leas th 1.5" to give me room to seat the quarter. On all but a few states. I am sinking a 1/4" rare earth magnet (from Lee Valley) into the back. I secure the magnet with a small pool of CA glue and it holds well. Some skinny states that become large tring to get the 1.5" require two magnets. I used to mix 5 minute epoxy, but have found CA works just as well.

    Only do your sanding/planing on the back so as to not disturb the patina.

    I use a lot of Watco spray lacquer. Come in about 4 sheens and depending on the surface, will build a surface quickly. (First coat is ALWAYS sacrifical)

    I will add to those who have cited seasonal cores as a part of the slow down. Saturday morning I mowed and then pulled most of the stuff off the patio to sweep and then hose down the pad. Then more yard work before I could break out the saw to work on the third version of a baseball sign for the preteen crowd. Spent part of Sunday working on building ornament stock for autumn shows and now I need to replace the bake element in the oven. Also getting ready to start emptying my wife's office as she retires. She has been in the same office for 20+years, so it will take a bit. Still looking in daily and making a few comments.

    A zero insert is one thing, but that is the new zero kerf model.

    Sounds like the clamps are sprung if double blade will work. Have Spike swap the clamps from your old saw if they were working properly. Takes about 1/2 hour total, including pulling table to get to the bottom clamp and reinstalling. Maybe a bit longer.

    I was doing some really tiny work and had my fingers close to the blade--sneezed and drew blood on that one. Now, I HAVE nicked my fingernails several times.
