  1. Do you think I need to get a new brad point? Drilling 1/8" [3mm] BB plywood with hand drill.
  2. Kevin, you sure have been making the sawdust fly and scraps fall away. Your detail on the "bling" is great.
  3. Wipe it down with paint thinner, then brush with a wire brush to remove any rust or discoloration, wipe with clean rag to remove any bristles and then apply two coats of Johnson's paste wax (yellow can from home cleaning department) about an hour apart. Then recoat about every month or so. Your table will be slick and nothing will transfer to your work to interfere with finishes. DO NOT use car waxes or silicone treatments.
  4. Been turning some really nice portrait work here lately. Drill the hole, insert blade, repeat, repeat... Great detail.
  5. Several years ago, I got a 788 as a combination anniversary and father's day gift. Sad to say it is in the shop right now, but I expect it back this week. That said, she told me to buy a new saw. So in the spring. I will be getting a Seyco or Pegas.
  6. HOLY SMOKES!
  7. Great cutting with loads of details.
  8. Scrolling is what keeps me on the socially acceptable side of sanity. With my saw back in the shop, I am at a loss for stuff to do after I leave work that doesn't involve more labor. Plates and cups are made every day--sanity is sawdust on the floor.
  9. That is some precise sawing. Just gave me an idea if I can find some old school wooden dominos.
  10. Ray: I am truly humbled that would share such a personal tragedy with us. My heart hurts because you hurt and because I know what depression will do to a family. Not as deep as what you have experienced, but as Les said the blocking people, etc. JohnB said he was open to a chat and so am I and I am only +3 hours on the clock. By all means, PM or get with me if there is anything I can do--even if it is just to listen. Probably can't offer any meaningful advise, but I can listen.
  11. Excellent work on both fronts. That will make somebody's day/week/month.
  12. Couple of points here. The tilting head keeps the work flat so you are not fighting gravity as you try to stay on the line. As for lifting the back, it gives much easier view of the cut, but is not so severe that you have to worry about slippage forward. (Just don't sit your pencil on the table and expect it be there)
  13. I have thinking of trying to set something up for a meeting, just never pulled the trigger. Will send you a PM with contact info.
  14. very creative and a great looking finished piece.
  15. Les: A treasure to be sure--but not the treasure he gave you. That is some great detail on the cutting and @don in brooklin on did a great job on the pattern.
  16. I've done a couple of the guitars, but instead of veining cuts, I found some super thin brass rods and super glued them on across the neck. (Not to scale mind you, but enough for an effect.)
  17. Thanks folks. Will let everyone know when and if I pull the trigger.
  18. My old DeWalt is beginning to show the signs of aging and over the weekend, I was looking at new saws. I think I saw a tilting head that had a digital tilt gauge built right into the front. Now I can't remember the name of the saw to investigate further. This is not going to be an immediate purchase, since I saw on the patio and will be probably putting everything away in another 6 weeks. Dear Village Residents, I ask you to help the memory (or hallucinations as the case may be) of someone who went into information overload.
  19. Les, It's been said, but that seems like a lot of wood for not much blade. And tiny blades break easily anyway.
  20. It depends on the subject for the pattern. I then reduce to the size I need for the magnet. I use a 1/4" forstner bit to counter sink the magnet and use a drop of super glue or epoxy to embed the magnet. This time of year, I might be making Christmas themed stuff--trees and that kind of stuff. Sine my saw is temporarily out of action. I am not doing anything at the moment.
  21. I get 1/4" from Lee Valley for my refrigerator magnets. They have a variety of sizes. Bought a pack at Hobby Lobby and didn't pay attention and they were .33" inch and I don't have that size Forstner bit, so they go to other brainstorms.
  22. May head to Ollie's here in a few.
  23. I use the test tubes for blade storage and have for years. Probably saved a lot of tears if I dropped the envelope through the years.
  24. I gave up and just sent to DeWalt this morning. No shiny metal, everything looked greasy, nothing obviously broken...
  25. Just picked up a knocking in the rear of my 788. Mild so far, but don't want to push it. Any ideas on cause? I have opened the side and don't see any shiny places, but it only ran about 10 seconds with the knocking. The knock is there only when the blade is under load.
