  1. If you can start it by rotating the arms, I'd say that the brushes are the problem as others have stated. Time for a good cleaning and inspection. If you have a compressor, blow out the brush holes too.
  2. Both great saws but you are used to the Hegner. The actions of the two saws are totally different. If you buy a new Hegner with all the latest improvements and additions, you'll have a great saw and no learning curve. Of course the cost is double so there is that also. I have the Pegas type saw in it's earlier form and I love it. I also had a Hegner and had it not had a speed problem I would have kept it. I liked it also. If you are into bowl making, the Pegas has the tilting head. And fretwork is far easier with the Pegas. Lots to think about but the fact that you have become used to how the Hegner operates would be the best way to go in my opinion. For what that's worth.
  3. Kevin, I think you might be right. I've sort of been waiting for the Hawks near me that are for sale on C/L to sell. I think I will sell it. I only bought it to experience what all of you Hawk owners kept talking about. It is a great saw. The height is something I can deal with in one way or another. But, if there are going to be problems in the future with parts, that is a deal-breaker. I'll do as you suggested and either pick up another EX type saw or wait for a deal on a used Hegner. I did like the Hegner that I had. But the "speed" problem was something that I couldn't get past.
  4. Welcome back Joe. I hope life gets easier for you. Scrolling is a great way to de-stress.
  5. Welcome Matt. SSV is the friendliest place to hang out you'll ever find. Be sure to keep us updated on your progress and projects. You picked a great saw to start with.
  6. Maybe a bunch of us Hawk owners should all pitch some money in and buy the business. I'm sure that collectively we could run it better. It's great that they have kept the name and the business going but to run it the way they do is really sad. If this is the way they are going to continue, I might be tempted to sell my Hawk and move toward a brand that is better represented.
  7. Well, you got the saw, you got your back fixed for a while. Now there is nothing but fun ahead. I look forward to hearing all about your new saw.
  8. It's right on the money. If not I'd return it. It is really well made.
  9. I came across this video the other day so I checked it out. I have always needed a good quality square and I was just too cheap to buy one. But after seeing this, I knew that I had to have it. The price is more than fair and the quality is outstanding. Check it out and see what you think. I'm not affiliated in any way with this company. Just passing along a great product. I ordered it and had it in 3 day. So there is enough time to get one for a stocking stuffer. I did buy this size but they have other sizes and other tools too. And the best part, "MADE IN THE U.S.A."
  10. Deleted, double posted.
  11. Thanks Melanie. So much is lost in the written word over the spoken word. And, you might be right. I'll have to come up with something to give him later on.
  12. Marg, can you describe when/how the knocking occurs? I was cutting on my EX yesterday and I noticed that when I would make a sharp turn I would get a noise that I had not heard before. I did some checking and found that a loose board that I have my box fan had come in contact with the saw stand and it was making that noise at different times. I moved it away and it stopped. Silly things like that can drive you to distraction.
  13. I'm really sorry to hear your saw didn't arrive but I'm even more sorry to hear about your spinal problems and the injection. I hope it all goes well and the discomfort is minimal. Lots of time to play with your new toy once you are feeling better. Prayers for you.
  14. I was being facetious about that mention of my son. And to answer your question, I never went any further with the project because he told me that most everybody who worked for the organization wasn't all that excited. For reasons I'm sworn to secrecy over. Sorry.
  15. Dan, I'm thinking maybe we can move into sports emblems or equipment. Did I ever mention that my son is the ballpark operations manager for the Washington Nationals?
  16. The doctor is right. My neighbor had a pacemaker implanted and he said he felt a whole ton better. Not sure of the difference between his and yours but it's going to help no matter what. Best of everything to you Les. We'll all be praying for your successful surgery.
  17. We all know that with french toast you want good sausage. And lots of syrup on the whole thing.
  18. Many times the subject has come up here and on other forums/groups regarding the "hockey stick" problems with saw blades. There have been lots of explanations offered but to someone who has very little knowledge of things mechanical or scroll saws I thought this might help. I just ran across this picture in the Excalibur owner's manual. It pretty well shows the problem and how to correct it.
  19. Congrats on your new Hegner. It'll last forever.
  20. I'm really surprised to hear that. I have been cutting a lot of mahogany measuring 3/4" x 1 1/2" x 3 1/2". Compound cuts. Two the full length and then some fretwork and two along the outside edges. Here is a pic of the pattern I'm using. So far, I have gotten as many as 3 completely cut before I had to change the blade. I am using the Pegas #5MGT on my Excalibur 21 and I have found that running it at full speed works the best. It seems to clear the dust from the kerfs better at that speed. Maybe you should try speeding up your saw. When you get your new saw that is.
  21. Yeah, you're right about that Dan. Sorry. But, what I have been trying to get at is this......a new person by the name of "Frosty the Snowman" logs on and asks where is the best place to buy one thing or another. They offer absolutely no information as to who they are, where they are, what type of projects they are interested in, what type/brand saw they have and the list goes on. It's very tough to help someone who offers nothing to work with. A long time ago, I suggested that we all "sign" our posts with our first names. That was pretty well received and most of us who are regulars did it. What is so different about adding a simple thing like the city, state, COUNTRY where you are located? It just makes sense to me. Am I being overly inquisitive? As for dogs, we don't have one. But if anybody is interested, we have two cats. I can post pics too.
  22. Kevin, do you know what the difference is between the Dewalt sleeves and the EX sleeves? Are they longer? If the bearings are the same, I can't believe there would be any difference in the sleeves unless the through bolts are different also. It makes no sense. I want to take my saw apart later next year but I'm not sure how they come apart as opposed to the Dewalts. Can you offer any insight?
  23. So now this topic has morphed into dog talk. I give up!
  24. Well, I'm happy that you are enjoying it. I for one get frustrated sometimes. There is another sub-forum on here that somebody chimed in and asked a question. It was very much related to this topic. I couldn't give them an answer because of unknown location so I just glossed over it. No info, no answer. Simple as that.
  25. Great pics and explanation. Hegner owners should take note and thoroughly inspect and lubricate their saws. Actually, we should all do this as preventative maintenance on our equipment and our bodies.
