    Dave, I would think any wood with oil in it is going to present a problem with glue up. Do a google on it and see what you find out.

    I have read folks mentioning 3 inch blades on forums but have no idea where they are buying them. Have you tried googling them? It appears that they are available on Amazon and Ace Hardware.

    I'm still waiting to find out who is going to be the replacement parts source for both the old and the new saws. The subject has recently come up regarding the bearings and sleeves for the green version of saws but nobody has any definitive info on that subject. I did email Ray at Seyco and got an email back to check in again after the holidays so I have to think they are closed for the next few days.

    If I'm not being too nosy, can I ask what you had to pay for just the saw and shipping? Did they offer any kind of a deal?

    Rolf, can you supply any info on your chair/stool that you use at the Hawk? If I decide to keep my Hawk, it might help to find the right chair. Everything at this point is dependent upon finding out what is happening with Bushton.

    I've never done portraits but to me, they are like fretwork where you are constantly moving your saw blade from one hole to the next. If that is the case, the Pegas would be far faster and easier to work with. I know that Scrappile does a lot of fretwork on his saws but I'm not sure which one he uses primarily for fretwork. He has a Hegner and a Seyco. Maybe he'll answer on here when he sees this topic. For my 2 cents worth, I'd go with the Pegas. Price and ease of use would be my deciding points. But like I said, you have worked with the Hegner for many years so you are used to how it operates.

    If you can start it by rotating the arms, I'd say that the brushes are the problem as others have stated. Time for a good cleaning and inspection. If you have a compressor, blow out the brush holes too.

    Both great saws but you are used to the Hegner. The actions of the two saws are totally different. If you buy a new Hegner with all the latest improvements and additions, you'll have a great saw and no learning curve. Of course the cost is double so there is that also. I have the Pegas type saw in it's earlier form and I love it. I also had a Hegner and had it not had a speed problem I would have kept it. I liked it also. If you are into bowl making, the Pegas has the tilting head. And fretwork is far easier with the Pegas. Lots to think about but the fact that you have become used to how the Hegner operates would be the best way to go in my opinion. For what that's worth.

    Kevin, I think you might be right. I've sort of been waiting for the Hawks near me that are for sale on C/L to sell. I think I will sell it. I only bought it to experience what all of you Hawk owners kept talking about. It is a great saw. The height is something I can deal with in one way or another. But, if there are going to be problems in the future with parts, that is a deal-breaker. I'll do as you suggested and either pick up another EX type saw or wait for a deal on a used Hegner. I did like the Hegner that I had. But the "speed" problem was something that I couldn't get past.

    Maybe a bunch of us Hawk owners should all pitch some money in and buy the business. I'm sure that collectively we could run it better. It's great that they have kept the name and the business going but to run it the way they do is really sad. If this is the way they are going to continue, I might be tempted to sell my Hawk and move toward a brand that is better represented.

    I came across this video the other day so I checked it out. I have always needed a good quality square and I was just too cheap to buy one. But after seeing this, I knew that I had to have it. The price is more than fair and the quality is outstanding. Check it out and see what you think. I'm not affiliated in any way with this company. Just passing along a great product. I ordered it and had it in 3 day. So there is enough time to get one for a stocking stuffer. I did buy this size but they have other sizes and other tools too. And the best part, "MADE IN THE U.S.A."

    Marg, can you describe when/how the knocking occurs? I was cutting on my EX yesterday and I noticed that when I would make a sharp turn I would get a noise that I had not heard before. I did some checking and found that a loose board that I have my box fan had come in contact with the saw stand and it was making that noise at different times. I moved it away and it stopped. Silly things like that can drive you to distraction.

    I'm really sorry to hear your saw didn't arrive but I'm even more sorry to hear about your spinal problems and the injection. I hope it all goes well and the discomfort is minimal. Lots of time to play with your new toy once you are feeling better. Prayers for you.

    I was being facetious about that mention of my son. And to answer your question, I never went any further with the project because he told me that most everybody who worked for the organization wasn't all that excited. For reasons I'm sworn to secrecy over. Sorry.
