Watco makes Danish oil. It is a wipe on oil. They also make a rattle can spray lacquer. Not the same product. You can find Watco products at DIY Centers formerly known as Do It centers. I don't know if they have any stores in Orange County.

I use FD Polar #5. They are a skip tooth and have a slight set to the teeth. If you don't have Polar blades, use skip tooth blades like Bill suggested.

Hey Ike, I have a great tip for you. Go over to Works in Progress & Tutorials, page 3, bottom of page named: "Simple jig for blade slippage". This will help you keep your thumb screw in tip top shape!

I usually use 3/4" hardwoods but 1/2" is fine too. As for finish, I use a 50/50 mix of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. It's important not to use an oil that is not designed as a finish like lemon oil or orange oil as these types of oils never dry and can stain a nice table top.

Fortunately, I have a full size cabinet saw. But I rarely use plywood. And if I do, it's not a full 4x8 sheet.

Edward, I use FD Polar #5's. They have a slight set to the teeth and tend to clear the sawdust out better. Also if you trim your blank down to 1-1/4" it will cut a little easier.Depending on the hardness of the wood, I can cut anywhere from three to seven birdhouses per blade.

Kevin, I use solid blanks because I have access to them and glueing up boards to make the blanks takes a lot of time, however, glued up boards certainly could be very creative if done in contrasting woods. You could glue up longer boards together to get the thickness needed, then cut to size. Good luck and let us see what you come up with.

Thanks everyone! The patterns are available from http://www.scrollsawinspirations.com The blanks required are 1-1/4" for the birdhouses and 3/4" for the birds. Stand is 3/4" oak asembled with pocket holes and screws. Stained with something from the paint cabinet. I sell these for $10 or two for $18. Last year, I almost sold out. What didn't sell made great Christmas gifts!
