    I spoke to my mill guy about this, he says it's a fungi in the wood that causes these black/brown lines It happens in various parts of the country/world and is fairly common. Just thought I would update the thread

    I just bought 2 18' boards of purple poplar yesterday - it looks fantastic! It was also a little more expensive I happen to think poplar is a very attractive grainy wood as I've been using it on all our puzzles, hangers and kids sets! All wood will fade with time AFAIK. I've dipped this purple in mineral oil and wow does it bring out the purple even more! It does however turn slightly brownish after the dip but the purple is still very vivid. My mill guy says it comes from a specific part of the country/world which is why there are various colors of the grain So far I have used Green with yellow (gorgeous), light beige with dark beige (very nice grain appearance) and last week I had a small piece of green/yellow/brown/purple - it made one of my dragons look fantastic! What I am told is poplar is a great "colored" wood - it takes painting very well, is used in cabinet and door making and although is seldom stained or left natural, I find it very attractive for my puzzle purposes.

    Just went to all the stores in my area - 45 and 77 both out of stock I ordered some from Amaz but according to delivery won't get here until Jun 13 - Jul 6 LOL There were a bunch of different vendors for 45 on Amaz with pricing ranging from 9.95 (which I bought) to 31.95 - walmart price 25.95 - it's insane I have some old Elmer's I can use in the meantime and just ordered an additional craft adhesive to try since it was only $6 Something's going on - Inflation? Other? Anyone try Loctite spray adhesive?

    In the past I've use both HVLP and LVLP For paints the HVLP works best for stains and finishes the LVLP works best I don't have an airbursh that others here have so can't comment on that I used this page for my original guidance in selecting:

    Pics: You can't really see the pop out but you follow the line to the right that the down arrow is pointing to you'll see the popout on the edge I'm assuming that line to be the "burn" mark from a fire - but no clue if that is accurate. The arrow on the right (pointing left) is where the popout is

    I would prefer to stay away from epoxy and re-cutting is not really option - I'm not good enough to duplicate a piece. I've tried and it's way out of my league.

    Once in awhile (not often, about once in 30 units) after cutting a puzzle I get what I call a "pop out". What it is: I'm using Poplar and sometimes there is a very dark grain running inside. It's almost as if there were a fire during the life of the tree and this is a remnant of it. Anyway, it's not exactly a knot, but after I cut a small piece "pops out" of this blackened area. Sometimes the "pop out" is in the middle, which I can usually fill with filler or with glue and matching dust. However, sometimes the "pop out" is on the tip of the unit and I don't know how to fill it when that happens I've tried filler, glue with dust, putting the piece back in it's cut out to brace it before gluing or filling - I have yet to be able to fix one of these when it happens on the edge of a unit I use these units now as samples and they're marked so I don't sell them, but I would like to be able to fix them. Any suggestions other than treating them as firewood? Thanks as always in advance for reading

    Yes they do - we sell a line specifically targeting young children as art projects - thing is we now get retirees buying them to keep themselves busy and nimble Also, at the time we did the 20k puzzle, we had a room set up just for puzzle making - this was way before I started woodworking and lived in Ca. The puzzle traveled with us from Ca to FL and made it in 10 sections - we lost 1 piece though during the move

    I love these things... We have a 20k piece puzzle we did several years ago We mounted each 2k section (there are 10) to mounting board and it's hanging on a wall in our rec room (which is now our packaging room LOL)

    I speak or email Scott at least weekly - spoke to him 2 Saturday's ago - he was getting ready for his first event of the season - which has now passed and was a great success for him. He has not mentioned to me being unwell or not alright

    Over the years, I've done this with various other things - cars, computer equipment, scuba equipment on and on I have no issue with offering a price - specially when someone doesn't know the value of what they have and are reasonable in negotiating.

    Yeah., she only mentioned the scroll saw - I think her son is taking the rest of the tools for himself

    Agreed,with hardwood. I make puzzles exclusively and only use poplar @ 13/16 from my lumber supplier. My puzzles all stand up and are sanded before and after cutting

    Sounds like the same guy, his name was Bob Rice if that means anything. He was a member here but doesn't appear to have been very active He did do a lot of different scrolling though - his FB page has tons of his work

    I actually played a few songs by them for a school auditorium in 1970 while a bunch of schools girls sang and fainted LOL Yeah, I remember it fondly

    Sweet! Florida is a "bear" to work in my garage during the summer/hot months! This year, I've installed a curtain system to enclose my work area to encompass a window unit I have. At the moment it will be for the cutting area, but I am considering enclosing right across the garage so the sanding area gets the benefit as well. I'll see after I get it all isolated how much more I can section off Pics will be forthcoming of course Thanks for sharing your setup - would be nice if I could just cut a hole in my garage LOL
