I am with @Scrappile. I have always used Deft spray lacquer on all my art pieces. Easy peasy and dries pretty much clear and super fast.

I would have to say my favorite scroll saw project was the first I ever made which was May of this past year. I made it as a Christmas present for my Daughter and her Husband. It is a silhouette of her and her husband at their wedding. The wedding was late in the evening and she loves the Moonlight and trees. Later in August I decided to enter it and another piece (a tree) I had done into a Juried Wood Art show. I ended up winning a couple of ribbons. I was so supprise by the ribbons that I wanted to surprise her and her husband with it. Now she new I entered the Tree piece but she had no idea that I had even made her the Moon piece. So when she and her husband came to the show they at first saw my Tree piece and then they both saw the one I made of them and they said "Wow, I wonder who did that one, it is really pretty (and then a pause)...HEY, that is us!" The judge happened to be there and got a good laugh as well. Anyway, I ended up wrapping it up and gave it to them this past Christmas.

Welcome from the State of Washington. It looks like the Seattle, Washington Huskies are going to play Michigan in the College football final....

Dave, what size wood did you use to make your chess pieces? Would 1" x 1" work?

It takes a Village to make a great dust collection system
MarieC replied to MarieC's topic in General Scroll Sawing
I have almost no dust under my scroll saw after sawing for 4 hours today. There are a few little pieces but the dust seems to be picked up by the top and/or bottom dust ports. Usually I have a pile of dust under my saw and everywhere else. The other thing I noticed is I can now saw without a mask on. I usually have sinus problems when sawing. Saying that, I will still wear a mask when I saw walnut or any of the exotic woods since I just want to be careful. I believe @rafairchild2 has been using this dust port for a while and he might have more information about how it has worked for him. -
Wow! I saw and loved your first one and this one is really beautiful! You do amazing work...I bet this took a while to make. Did you cut out the chess pieces 2 dimensionally and then carved them?

It takes a Village to make a great dust collection system
MarieC replied to MarieC's topic in General Scroll Sawing
Thank you both! I do remember you both stating not to glue your parts in previous dust collection threads, so I followed your advice and did not glue anything. Mostly used those rubber connecters that just are tightened up with a screw. I do think I may have used gorilla tape in one place that was a bit loose. In a couple of places I used Woodcraft dust collection couplings to hold things together (especially on my collection box). https://www.woodcraft.com/products/4-pieces-2-1-2-clear-dust-collection-network-coupling-woodriver-dust-connection?gclid=Cj0KCQiAhc-sBhCEARIsAOVwHuTpPgMf72hkPLK4ucHil0D86zH_8iezWunp8ZH1FTPtOgK5u1W1jNIaAga2EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds Thanks again for all your great suggestions! -
It takes a Village to make a great dust collection system
MarieC replied to MarieC's topic in General Scroll Sawing
If you need better pictures (close ups, let me know. When I turned it on without adjusting the dust gates, the locline really was noisy (kind of a high pitch) but when I open my gate just a little to the hose for clean up, it really quieted down and still provided plenty of suction. -

Great Idea on how you catch your pieces....but I do like Rolf's set up and I will use that on my Hawk. Yes, I now need to buy another locline and the bottom dust collector device from James for my new saw...which I can't wait to start using. I notice all dust collection systems are 25% off at Woodcraft for all of January, so I am going to need to order some more tubes and dust gates, etc. I did look at that Hawk you are interested in...It looks really clean. Maybe I will try making some sawdust with my new Hawk so I can let you know how I like it...unfortunately, it is still sitting in our very cold orchard bldg right now because my heated woodshop is too small. -
A while back Paul @Scrappile posted some info on his dust collection system and many folks from the village responded. So I decided to set up one for my saw as well. I have a very large noisy dust collector which I use for my large equipment but I wanted something quieter while I scroll saw. I bought the Dewalt Stealth (really quiet) shopvac and set it 20' away from my little workshop room (located in our Orchard Building). I then hooked up the locline suction tube Paul suggested and purchased the bottom attachement from @James E. Welch https://bigriverwares.etsy.com/listing/1497458276 and hooked that up as @rafairchild2 described using dust gates as a "throttle" to decrease the suction to just what I needed. Then I took @Rolf cool collecting catch system and added it... so If I had a piece that was sucked up it would land in my catch container. I didn't have a container like his, so I took an OXO storage container from my kitchen (it held coffee beans) and drilled 2 1/2" holes in both sides and used it as my collection container with a screen over one side. I also added a "Y" where it came out of the wall so I could add a vacuum hose for clean up in my shop. Wow! it really works great. I used to use a small paint brush to remove some of the sawdust and now I don't need it. I also have virtually no dust on the floor anymore.... Thank you Village People for all your help!

Funny you asked. I just drilled through one this evening because I wanted to screw it to my wall to hold my fine files. It was easy-peasy to drill but was kind of a pain trying to get the the shavings out of the holes. Not sure what it would be like to saw...

Thank you! The next time I visit you and Patti. Remind me to bring a pie..I make a lot of them... all kinds...in fact I am making one right now...

Great work! I love that idea. I also love boxes

Really nice basket!

Excellent work and I love the frame.

Paul, it looks like a nice saw. I did see a Hegner 18 inch up in Colville but I think he wants $500. There is one in Kalispell for $250 https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/853594876432507/?mibextid=rS40aB7S9Ucbxw6v But not sure if you wanted another like that. If you could get to Spokane, you could stay with us and I would be happy to go with you to Kalispell.
-
Okay then that is the one I will get...great price too...thanks
-
Ray, thanks so much ...just one question... is it the type that to keep it on, you keep your foot on it, and as soon as you take your foot off, it turns off? (Did I use too many commas?)
-
I use a foot switch on my EX 21 that came with the saw when I bought it. .... I think you would call it a step on/off switch which I like. Where did you get yours?
-
Kevin, Thank you.... by the way, this saw did not come with a foot switch. Do you have a recommendation for one. My Ex-21 has a "plug in" right on the saw for the foot switch, this one does not. Curious how that works. Thanks again. mc

Thank you! I do make a cherry pie but only during the summer when our cherries are ripe

Lookie what I got myself for Christmas @rjweb @OCtoolguy @Scrappile @Rolf @DRugerH @preprius! And I was still able to make the apple pie and go to the Christmas party! It runs beautifully, the table top is almost new and the plastic protective was still on some parts of it. Not too bad for $275
