I have done enlay down to 1/2". Same as relief only at a slight angle. You are correct. I always have to concentrate on the direction of cut. But it is fun to do. This is a pretty good book on Relief cutting. Welcome to the Village. Toy making is fun. As are a lot of other items you can make using a scrollsaw. If and when you decide you need to upgrade to a larger saw, check out what used saws are for sale in your area. Depending on where you live, you can get some high-end saws for very good prices. I recently purchased a 26" Hawk in great condition for less than $300. But before buying, ask for advice here on what you are looking at. You will get some good advice.

I suggest get some Pegas and Flying Duchman blades to work with, they seem to be the most popular. Try different types and sizes, to determine what works best for you on the project you are working on. Have fun.

I have not seen that before either. Bottle up some of that fine sawdust and keep it to mix for repair work on some other project. I collect little bottles of different sawdust just for that purpose.

Just took this off my saw this evening. Did some frizzy clean up and sanding. No finished applied yet. It is a Charles Dearing pattern. 1/2" oak. Mainly used small spiral blade #2/0 Pegas, #3/0 and #1 Flying Dutchman. One of the reasons I chose to cut it was I wanted got get practice with spiral blade again, I have not use them much over the past couple years. Yep, I still like them. I also like to cut trees.

I use more tension than the video shows. When I test the tension on my Hegner by plucking the blade, I want to hear a high "C" note not a lower plucking sound. Breaking blades happen and the more experience you gain the less you will break. feeding th wood into the blade too fast, improper tensioning, wrong blade for the wood you are cutting can all cause blade breakage. When I first started with my Hegner I broke lots of them. So many I called Advance Machinery for advice. They gave me suggestions, and all of a sudden I just got comfortable with the feel of the Hegner. But, after 14 years of sawing I still break blades occasionally. Just part of the craft. Now I would not part with mine. The only other saw I would want is another Hegner. The curve you picture on the blade, is that the top or bottom of the blade? If it is the top. when you put the blade in the top clamp insert it until it stops then pull it back a fraction of an inch, just a little, then clamp it. The stop is the end of the blade hitting the bolt that goes through the clamp. Pull it back just enough so it does not touch that bolt. Tightening the clamp with the end of the blade touching that bolt can cause a hockey stick bend like that. Do not get discouraged, it takes a little time to work the kinks out, no matter the saw you are using.

I made one of "Winnie the Pooh" years ago. when my last grandson was born. He is not learning how to drive! Do not remember having a pattern. I got he music mechanism off Ebay. It has the Pooh song. Pooh goes around and around.
